My Bratty Wife Chapter 62

Rain lashed against Suzy’s face, blurring the world around her. Her nightgown, plastered to her skin, offered no protection from the icy chill and her hair plastered to her face. Yet, she pushed forward, her feet numb against the wet stone path, driven by an unseen force.

The dream, now a vivid memory, echoed in her mind. The well, dark and ominous, stood as a stark symbol of the fate she feared awaited her. "My head..." she muttered, a hand flying to her temple. "It feels like it’s going to explode."

Her heart hammered against her ribs, a frantic drumbeat echoing in her ears. Nausea churned in her stomach, adding to the growing sense of disorientation. Each step felt like a monumental effort, her legs heavy and leaden.

"Why, Cassandra?" she gasped, the question tearing from her lips like a sob. "Why did they kill you? What reason could there be?"

Each step felt like an eternity, her legs heavy with fatigue and fear. Another wave of nausea rolled through her stomach, leaving her feeling weak and disoriented.

She stumbled, nearly losing her footing on the muddy ground. "I need to... stop," she gasped, leaning against a nearby tree for support.

Her breaths came in ragged gasps, her heart hammering a frantic tattoo against her ribs. The world spun around her, the rain a dizzying curtain obscuring her vision. "Why... why did they kill her?" she choked out, the question tearing from her lips.

A horrifying realization dawned on her. Was Cassandra’s death just a random act of cruelty? Was there a reason, a motive behind it? And more importantly, with Suzy now occupying Cassandra’s body, would the same fate befall her?

Panic clawed its way up her throat, constricting her lungs. She felt like a trapped animal, her fear a suffocating weight threatening to crush her. "They will think... they will think I’m her," she whispered, the words tasting like ashes in her mouth.

Tears mingled with the rain on her face, blurring her vision further. Her breath came in shallow pants, her body trembling uncontrollably. "What do I do?" she cried out, her voice lost in the storm’s fury. "How do I calm myself?"

Suzy sank to the ground, her legs buckling under the weight of her fear. She needed to calm down, to think clearly. But the terror was a relentless wave, threatening to pull her under. She closed her eyes, desperately seeking a shred of peace amidst the chaos.

"Breathe," she whispered to herself, forcing her lungs to take in a shaky breath. "One... two... three..." She repeated the mantra, focusing on the rhythm of her own breath, a tiny anchor in the storm of emotions.

A cold hand clamped onto her wrist, jerking her out of her desperate search for solace. She looked up, startled, to find Ryan looming over her, his face a mask of fury. Rain lashed down on them both, soaking him through as quickly as it had soaked her.

"Duchess!" he roared, his voice barely audible over the storm’s fury. "Are you out of your mind? What on earth are you doing?"

Suzy flinched at the harshness in his voice, the rain stinging her already tear-streaked cheeks. She stammered, her teeth chattering from the cold, "I... I thought... maybe if I got wet... I would calm down."

Ryan’s anger seemed to intensify at her nonsensical explanation. "Calm down?" he snapped, his voice dripping with sarcasm. "What happened to the bathroom? Don’t you think before you act?"

Suzy winced at the harshness in his voice, but something about his anger felt... protective. She was speechless. She felt a wave of shame wash over her. He was right, of course. Running out into the night, especially in such weather, was utterly reckless, foolish even. But fear had consumed her, leaving logic and reason behind. She could only manage a weak whisper.

"I... I didn’t think," she confessed, her voice barely a whimper. "I just... left."

Ryan let out a frustrated groan. He ran a hand through his rain-soaked hair, his chest heaving with a mixture of anger and relief. Finding Suzy, soaked and shivering under a tree, had been a terrifying experience. Now, faced with her explanation, his anger simmered but was overshadowed by a nagging concern.

"Just left?" he repeated, his voice calmer but still laced with exasperation. "Duchess, you could have gotten sick. You could have been hurt!"

Suzy looked down at her mud-caked shoes, the childishness of her actions finally hitting her. Shame burned in her cheeks as she mumbled, "I’m sorry. I... I overreacted."

Ryan sighed, his anger dissipating in the face of her apology. He knew something had gotten to her, something bad enough to drive her out into the storm. But what? He knelt down beside her, his touch unexpectedly gentle when he took her hand and pulled her up to her feet.

Just then, a flicker of movement caught her eye. Through the rain-streaked darkness, she saw figures approaching – Noah and several guards, alerted by Noah’s frantic report, their faces etched with concern.

Ryan, following her gaze, cursed under his breath. He glanced at Suzy, his eyes lingering for a fraction of a second. A surge of protectiveness washed over Ryan. Suzy’s flimsy nightgown, plastered to her body by the rain, offered little in the way of warmth or decency. Her pink nipples visible under the flimsy material. She was completely naked underneath the drenched cloth. The outline of her form was unmistakable, a sight not meant for the watchful eyes of the guards.

"Stay here," he muttered to Suzy, his voice low and urgent. He didn’t wait for her response. In a swift movement, he whipped off his own cloak, the thick fabric offering a barrier from the elements.

With a swift movement, he wrapped it around Suzy’s shivering form, the damp material offering a meager shield against the cold.

"Hold on, lass," he muttered, his voice gruff but laced with a protectiveness that surprised even him.

He raised a hand, halting the approaching guards in their tracks. "There’s no need to come closer," he commanded, his voice leaving no room for argument. "I’ll take the Duchess inside myself."

Noah, skidding to a halt, looked from the broad figure to the trembling form beside the tree. Relief warred with confusion on his face. "But Your Grace..." he stammered, unsure of what to do.

Ryan cut him off, his voice laced with a sharp edge. "Do as I say, Noah. Inform Doris to prepare the Duchess’s chambers and fetch Dr. Abernathy immediately. She needs to be seen to."

Noah, understanding the urgency of the situation, nodded curtly and sprinted back towards the castle, his footsteps echoing in the rain. Ryan turned his attention back to Suzy, his concern evident in his eyes.

"Come on," he said gently, extending a hand towards her. He pulled her close, his cloak enveloping them both like a protective shield, obscuring her from the watchful eyes of the guards. Her body, trembling with cold and fear, pressed against his, a stark contrast to the heat radiating from his own.

Suzy, numb with shock and relief, offered no resistance as Ryan guided her back towards the castle. The rain continued to lash down around them, but for a moment, nestled within the warmth of his cloak and his body, she felt a fragile sense of security.

They moved in silence, the only sound the rhythmic crunch of their feet on the muddy ground. Ryan’s cloak, damp and heavy, offered some protection from the downpour, but Suzy couldn’t help but feel a flicker of self-consciousness. The close proximity, the way her body felt exposed beneath the thin fabric of her nightgown, sent a wave of embarrassment creeping up her cheeks.

As they reached the castle steps, the heavy oak doors swung open, revealing a worried Doris and a bewildered Dr. Abernathy. Ryan ushered Suzy inside, the warmth of the castle a welcome relief against the biting chill.

"Get her dry clothes and a hot drink," Ryan instructed Doris, his voice tight with concern. "She’s soaked to the bone."

Doris nodded, her eyes flitting between Suzy and Ryan with a hint of curiosity. Without a word, she ushered Suzy towards the stairs, leading her towards the safety of her chambers. Dr. Abernathy, his brow furrowed, lingered behind for a moment.

"Is everything alright, Your Grace?" he inquired, his voice laced with concern.

Ryan hesitated for a moment, then shook his head, a slight frown creasing his forehead. "There’s been a bit of a... misunderstanding," he said finally, his voice neutral. "The Duchess will explain it later. For now, please ensure she’s looked after."

Dr. Abernathy, a man of discretion, bowed his head. "Of course, Your Grace," he murmured. With another worried glance at Ryan, he turned and hurried after Suzy and Doris, leaving Ryan alone in the echoing hallway.

Ryan stood there for a moment, the weight of the night settling on his shoulders. He had found Suzy, safe but shaken. But the mystery of her sudden flight, the fear etched on her face – those were questions that demanded answers. And as he watched the doctor and maid ascend the stairs, Ryan couldn’t help but think that something is wrong?
