My Coldhearted Husband’s Regret Chapter 160

For seven years, Veronica thought she understood the dynamics of corporate politics. She was wrong.

Vincent's voice dropped to a conspiratorial whisper as he approached their workstation, his eyes gleaming with the kind of gossip that spread through offices like wildfire. The morning sun streamed through the floor-to-ceiling windows of Dennis Corporation, casting long shadows across the marble floors.

"You want to know something interesting about Ms. Crystal?" Vincent began, glancing around to ensure no one else was listening.

Veronica looked up from her computer screen, noting the mischievous expression on Vincent's face. Dario paused his typing, sensing the shift in atmosphere.

Vincent leaned closer, his voice barely audible. "That woman certainly knows how to position herself advantageously."

He paused for dramatic effect, watching their faces carefully.

"Ms. Crystal's team struggled all weekend with their project. Nothing was moving forward. Then suddenly, around seven last evening, Mr. Dennis himself showed up to rescue the situation. Spent hours working through the technical complications with her personally."

Veronica felt something cold settle in her stomach. She had seen Cullen leave the office around six yesterday, mentioning he had important business to handle. Now she understood what that business had been.

"But here's where it gets really interesting," Vincent continued, his eyebrows rising suggestively. "Apparently, our dedicated Mr. Dennis and Ms. Crystal worked so late into the night that they decided to stay in the executive suite upstairs. From what I've heard, they haven't emerged from those quarters yet this morning."

The implication hung heavy in the air between them. Vincent's meaningful look toward Dario confirmed exactly what he was suggesting had transpired between Cullen and Niall during their overnight stay.

Dario immediately reached over and pressed his palms against Veronica's ears, his protective instincts kicking in. "Good grief, Vincent. Some information doesn't need to be shared so explicitly."

But Veronica had already processed every word. The damage was done, and Dario's gesture felt more patronizing than protective. She gently removed his hands, her expression carefully neutral.

The morning phone call suddenly made perfect sense. When Sabrina had tried reaching Cullen earlier, Niall had been the one to answer his phone. The intimate familiarity in her voice, the casual way she had handled his personal calls - it all painted a clear picture of how their professional relationship had evolved.

Before Dario could offer any awkward commentary on the situation, Niall herself appeared in the main workspace. Her timing was almost theatrical, as if she had been waiting for the perfect moment to make her entrance.

Dario quickly dropped his hands and turned toward his computer, muttering under his breath. "Well, I suppose they're both adults capable of making their own decisions."

Vincent, caught in the middle of his gossip session, began coughing nervously when he spotted Niall approaching. His face flushed with embarrassment at being potentially overheard discussing her personal affairs.

Niall moved through the office with quiet confidence, though exhaustion was evident in the slight shadows under her eyes and the careful way she carried herself. Her professional attire was impeccable as always, but there was something different about her demeanor - a satisfied glow that spoke of significant personal victories achieved.

She had been pushing herself relentlessly for days on this project, working late into multiple evenings. Combined with her overnight stay upstairs with Cullen, the physical toll was apparent to anyone paying attention.

Vincent deliberately averted his gaze, suddenly finding his computer screen fascinating. Given the circumstances Vincent had just described, Niall's fatigue seemed entirely reasonable and expected.

After offering Dario a brief, professional nod of acknowledgment, Niall joined her team members who were gathered around the conference table. They immediately launched into discussions about project timelines and deliverables, their voices animated with renewed energy.

Veronica and Dario returned to their respective tasks, though the atmosphere between them had shifted noticeably. The comfortable routine of their morning work felt strained now, weighted down by the implications of Vincent's revelations.

As the clock approached noon, conversations throughout the office naturally turned toward lunch plans. Various groups were forming to venture out to nearby restaurants, and the normal mid-day energy was building.

That's when Cullen made his appearance.

He entered the main workspace with his usual commanding presence, his expensive suit perfectly tailored and his dark hair showing no signs of the late night Vincent had described. His eyes swept briefly across the room, lingering for just a moment on Veronica before he deliberately looked away and headed directly toward the conference area where Niall was conducting her team meeting.

The entire room seemed to shift its attention toward him. Employees straightened in their chairs and offered respectful greetings as he passed their workstations. Cullen acknowledged them with professional nods, but his focus remained clearly fixed on reaching Niall's group.

When he entered the conference area, everyone immediately stood up in deference to his position. The sudden scraping of chairs and murmur of "Good morning, Mr. Dennis" filled the space.

Everyone except Niall.

She remained seated at the head of the table, looking up at him with a smile that suggested intimate familiarity rather than professional respect. Her confidence in that moment was striking - the assurance of someone who knew exactly where she stood in his priorities.

"You decided to come in after all," she said, her tone warm and slightly teasing.

Cullen nodded, moving to stand beside her chair in a way that seemed natural and practiced. "I wanted to check on the progress personally. How are things developing?"

"Much clearer now," Niall replied, her voice carrying satisfaction. "The breakthrough we achieved last night really helped clarify the direction. Everything is starting to fall into place properly."

"Excellent news," Cullen responded, and there was genuine pleasure in his voice.

Niall's smile deepened as she looked up at him. "I couldn't have managed it without your guidance last night. Your insights were exactly what the project needed."

Cullen's expression softened in a way that few people in the office ever witnessed. "I was happy to help. It's important work."

Then he addressed the broader group, his voice returning to its normal authoritative tone. "I know everyone has been putting in extra hours recently, and I appreciate the dedication. I'd like to take everyone out for lunch today - my treat."

The response from Niall's team was immediate and enthusiastic. Working directly with Cullen Dennis came with obvious perks, and they were clearly enjoying the benefits of their association with Niall's rising star.

But then Niall made a suggestion that surprised everyone.

"Should we extend the invitation to include Mr. Reid's team as well?" she asked, gesturing toward where Dario, Veronica, and Vincent were working.

The suggestion hung in the air. When someone proposed expanding a superior's generous offer to include additional people, it typically indicated a very close personal relationship - the kind of intimacy that allowed for such presumptuous recommendations.

Cullen considered her suggestion for barely a moment before nodding his agreement. "Of course. The more the merrier."

Niall rose from her chair with obvious satisfaction and began walking toward Veronica and Dario's workspace, her victory complete.
