My Coldhearted Husband’s Regret Chapter 88

Veronica froze, her cheeks burning with embarrassment. The awkwardness hung in the air between them like a thick fog, but she wasn't completely mortified.

They were married, after all. Throughout their years together, they had shared intimate moments as any married couple would, even if those encounters lacked the emotional connection she desperately craved.

She had always yearned for Cullen to truly love her, but she had never resorted to obvious attempts at seduction.

It wasn't that the thought hadn't crossed her mind. She simply knew better than to believe such tactics would have any effect on a man like him. That knowledge had always stopped her from trying.

That's exactly why she consistently chose conservative sleepwear around the house - loose, buttoned pajama sets that covered her modestly.

Tonight's outfit fell into that same category. The oversized top was long enough that even without the matching bottoms, it maintained her dignity.

Seducing him was the furthest thing from her mind.

Even so, she felt compelled to clarify the situation to prevent any confusion. "I simply forgot to put on the pants."

Veronica was certain her baggy shirt, with its generous length, revealed nothing inappropriate.

What she failed to consider was how her naturally graceful silhouette couldn't be completely hidden, no matter how loose the fabric. The shirt's asymmetrical hem - cut shorter in front and longer in back - drew attention to her slender, pale legs. From certain vantage points, the fabric's movement offered tantalizing glimpses that sparked the imagination.

Beyond that, she had just emerged from her shower, leaving her skin luminous and dewy, her features soft and glowing. She radiated an innocent, wholesome appeal.

The oversized pajama top created the same effect as a woman wearing her lover's dress shirt - casually seductive without trying.

It was far more captivating than any deliberate lingerie choice could have been.

Cullen absorbed her explanation, his eyes briefly scanning her form before he deliberately shifted his gaze elsewhere. His voice remained coolly neutral when he responded, "Understood."

Relief washed over Veronica when she realized he hadn't misinterpreted her appearance. She said nothing more and walked toward the closet to retrieve proper clothing.

When she emerged fully dressed, Cullen remained in the bedroom.

Veronica couldn't imagine what conversation they might need to have. After a brief glance in his direction, she moved past him to settle at her vanity table and begin her nightly skincare regimen.

Cullen rose from his position, collected his sleepwear, and disappeared into the bathroom for his shower.

The hour was late, so once Veronica completed her beauty routine, she slipped beneath the covers.

During their previous night together at Dennis Estate, she had felt completely serene and had drifted off without difficulty.

Tonight brought a different energy entirely, her mind churning with the weight of his earlier commitment still fresh in her thoughts.

Sleep eluded her as she lay there, her mind refusing to quiet.

Eventually, Cullen finished his shower and stepped back into the bedroom.

Some time passed before he extinguished the lights and settled onto his side of the mattress.

Veronica kept her eyes closed, acutely aware of the physical space he maintained between them.

Cullen showed no interest in conversation either, leaving them surrounded by darkness and silence.

Gradually, her racing thoughts began to settle, and unconsciousness finally claimed her.

Dawn brought solitude - Veronica awakened to discover the bed empty beside her.

After completing her morning preparations and changing into day clothes, she made her way downstairs. Cook was already moving about the kitchen.

The moment Cook spotted Veronica, she opened her mouth to speak, but Cullen's entrance from outside interrupted her.

He wore charcoal athletic wear, his hair still damp with perspiration - clearly returning from his daily morning exercise routine.

His eyes found Cook as he offered a simple greeting. "Good morning."

Cook studied both of them, and her expression suddenly darkened with disappointment. "You're both awake this early?"

The comment struck Veronica as odd. Shouldn't rising early be considered positive? Why would Cook appear displeased by their punctuality?

Before Veronica could fully process this reaction, Cullen spoke with his characteristic composure. "I have background knowledge in pharmaceutical studies. That herbal mixture you served us yesterday evening has no effect on my system."

He turned and strode toward the staircase without another word.

Veronica's body went rigid. It took several heartbeats for the full implication to register - Cullen was revealing that Cook had deliberately added something to their soup the previous night.
