Mubai put away the document and said, “Alright, I’ll help you look after them for now.”
Xinghe frowned slightly but she didn’t argue with him. After all, she was dying, after her death, these things would naturally be returned back to him.
Mubai expected her rejection but, as mentioned before, no one could stop him from doing what he wanted to do.
“Have you come up with any ideas for the creation of the artificial limbs?” he enquired, “Feel free to bounce ideas off me. I might prove to be a bigger help than you imagine.”
“Temporarily, I have nothing. I need a few days to go over the current design first.”
“Feel free to use the design papers stored at the lab.”
“I know, thank you,” That was Xinghe’s plan to begin with. Since there already were ready designs, she didn’t want to waste time and start from scratch.
A second saved is a second she could see her son sooner.
The biggest issue with the current mechanical artificial limb was its lack of authenticity, dexterity and overall weight.
In other words, Xinghe’s main task was to perfect the existing technology, to make the artificial limb more realistic so to speak.
It sounded simple on paper but it was something that was hard to turn into reality. Thankfully, she had dealt with this kind of technology before…
Xinghe’s attention wavered as she submerged herself into her own thoughts.
Mubai turned to capture the profile of her face. He examined and memorized her every detail, not missing even the smallest twitch of emotion.
She was too caught up in her own thoughts that she didn’t realize he was watching her the whole way home.
When the car pulled to a stop, disappointment creased Mubai’s brows. He already asked his driver to go slower than usual but time flies when one’s having fun.
Thankfully, he would pass her house every day he went to and from work. It sounded crazy in his mind but he was certain the car ride would be much less enjoyable and, not to mention, lonely without her presence.
The halt in the vehicle snapped Xinghe back into focus.
She opened the car door to leave…
“I’ll come pick you up tomorrow,” Mubai dropped.
Xinghe turned back to look at him. Her eyes were indifferent when she rejected him, “There’s no need for that. I’m staying home for a few days to focus on the design.”
“You’re not going to the lab?”
“There’s no need to.”
“Alright. 1 have to be away for business in the coming week anyway. Then, 1 will see you when 1 return. Remember to call me if you need any help.”
Xinghe nodded wordlessly and stepped out of his car.
Mubai rolled down his car window to watch her enter her house before ordering his driver to carry on.
Xia Zhi saw all this unfold from his upstairs window.
When Xinghe walked into the living room, he clambered down the stairs with a series of heavy thuds. He asked with surprise, “Sis, 1 saw it was Xi Mubai who dropped you home! Are you two getting back together?”
Xinghe rewarded him with a curious gaze. “Why would you think that? He fetched me because our house is on his way home.”
“But… but the way he looks at you is way too suspicious…” Like he was looking at his lover.
There was definitely something going on that was more than a simple relationship between colleagues.
