Just as Shisui led the clan out of the Uchiha compound, they were intercepted by Anbu ninja.

"Third Hokage, that doesn't matter. All you need to know is that I am your enemy," Shisui replied coolly.
Hiruzen wasted no more words, summoning his monkey companion, Enma.
Enma was one of the strongest summons, second only perhaps to the Sages of The Three Big Sage Regions. (Now only two, since Shin had eliminated the White Snake Sage).
"Looks like another tough fight," Enma remarked upon appearing. Hiruzen wouldn't summon him otherwise.
"Enma, I need your help again. Transform into the Adamantine Staff," Hiruzen said to Enma.
Enma transformed without complaint, becoming the Adamantine Staff, which Hiruzen wielded as his weapon.
"I'll deal with Shisui Uchiha. The rest of you, handle the other Uchiha clansmen," Hiruzen ordered the Anbu ninja accompanying him.
He then attacked Shisui without hesitation. Against traitors, there was no mercy.
