Just thinking back to what Guts said just now made Yuhi Kurenai lose her appetite all over again.
She glanced toward the leftover roast and asked, hesitantly, "…D-Does eating wild pork make you grow a beard?"
Guts nearly choked on his bite. He froze, mid-chew, expression flat as a chalkboard.
He shot her a deadpan look. "Are we still on that?"
Even someone like him was starting to feel a little bad now.
Though the topic eventually changed, Kurenai didn't touch a single bite of meat after that.
Naturally, Guts didn't let it go to waste. He happily took care of the entire roast boar by himself—bone, fat, tail, and all.
The next morning came colder than usual, but Guts was up early anyway. Unlike the opening ceremony, today marked the official start of classes.
Halfway through basic training, Guts was forced to stop and head toward the academy.
Miraculously, Obito wasn't late today. Maybe because he hadn't bumped into his usual helping-grandma side quest.
But his focus was... questionable. The whole time, he couldn't take his eyes off Rin.
Guts yawned hard. "Ahaaaa~"
Even with Garp's physique, this five-year-old body was already reaching its limits.
Should I nap before class? he wondered, eyes drooping, face sinking slowly toward the desk like a ship going down.
He was this close to sweet sleep when—
"GUTS, YOU BASTARD!!!"
The roar blasted through the classroom door like a lightning strike, instantly nuking any trace of sleepiness.
Obito jumped like he'd been caught peeking into the girls' bathroom, face pale, tumbling over himself to stand straight.
Everyone looked toward the door.
Storming toward Guts like a red-haired hurricane, face flushed, fists clenched.
Guts blinked innocently, already guessing why she was mad. He cocked his head and asked,
"You—you—you! That thing you said yesterday!" she pointed an accusing finger, cheeks burning, lips trembling.
But the words wouldn't come out.
She couldn't very well scream in front of the whole class, "That pig whip wasn't a tail—it was a pig's…!"
After going home, she'd spent the whole evening panicking about facial hair.
She even sprinted to Konoha Library before it closed, frantically flipping through anatomy books.
And that's when she learned the horrifying truth.
Definitely not a tail.
Just the worst possible thing she could've almost eaten.
She'd nearly vomited on the spot.
Now, faced with the smug idiot who let her believe it, her blood pressure spiked again.
But before she could explode, Guts leaned in close—way too close—and whispered:
"If I'd told you the truth, would you really have eaten it? Or would you rather I let you chomp down on that pig junk with a smile?"
Then, just as fast, he leaned back and sat like nothing happened.
She wasn't an unreasonable girl. She got it. He'd spared her from something... traumatizing.
She'd almost eaten that!
She clenched her fists again, trying to swallow the nausea creeping up her throat.
Guts whispering in her ear looked... a bit different to the rest of the class.
"Oh ho! Guts! Is this the power of youth?!" shouted Might Guy, already standing, tears of passion in his eyes.
"Ohhhhhh~~~" the entire class erupted, laughing and jeering like they'd just witnessed a love confession.
Even Obito, ever the chaos gremlin, was grinning ear-to-ear.
Kurenai's face turned the color of a ripe tomato.
Guts sighed, rubbing his forehead.
Honestly, if this was Tsunade, sure, maybe he'd get the misunderstanding. But Kurenai? Right now? This was just cruel.
In the corner, Kakashi scoffed with a bored
Rin glanced at him, curious. Asuma, meanwhile, looked annoyed enough to step in… but just then, the bell rang.
Their homeroom teacher strolled in, clueless and smiling.
"What's going on? You all seem… very spirited on the first day."
"Teacher!" Obito shouted without missing a beat, finger pointing like he was in court.
"Guts and Kurenai were whispering romantically in class!"
The classroom burst into laughter.
Kurenai sank into her seat beside Guts, red-faced, defeated, looking for a hole to crawl into.
She looked just like a younger, angrier version of her future student Hyūga Hinata.
The teacher blinked and sighed. Why did I think these little monsters were excited for school…?
He smacked the lesson plan against the podium, forcing everyone back to attention.
"All right, all right, settle down. The first lesson today is about the foundation of all ninja arts—Chakra. Open your textbooks to page one."
Guts didn't do the usual novel thing of sleeping in class like some slacker protagonist.
Until he confirmed whether he could unlock the Eight Inner Gates, he had to master the basics.
