As time passed second by second, Sophie Smith naturally felt the exchange between the two men was a bit dull.
"Mr. Smith, I’m sorry, but I think we should call it a day."
He noticed the slight annoyance in Sophie Smith’s eyes, so he naturally suggested ending the gathering.
"Alright then." John just went along with Asher Land’s decision.
The driver drove the car right to the restaurant entrance to take them back to the hotel, but Asher Land simply took the car keys from the driver’s hand.
"Get in the car," he said to Sophie Smith, who was standing beside him.
Sophie Smith’s dress had a long hem, making it inconvenient to get in the car. He squatted down his tall frame slightly to lift her dress hem for her.
Sophie Smith’s body stiffened, but in the end, she said nothing and silently got into the car.
The car drove through the bustling and exotic streets. Sophie Smith gazed at the scenery outside the window, feeling inexplicably happy. The corners of her mouth unknowingly curled up into a smile, but this smile happened to fall into his line of sight.
"What is making you so happy?"
"It’s certainly not because of you," she muttered softly.
"What did you say?" His tone was somewhat stern.
"Nothing." Sophie Smith had no desire to make him angry on these beautiful foreign streets.
The car twisted and turned, finally stopping at the pedestrian street.
As night fell, the streets were bustling with people; the carousel in the square, the chalk drawings by street artists, and the various sculptures made Sophie Smith linger.
Italy has many churches, whether grand, holy, or solemn, in Sophie Smith’s eyes, they can only be described as breathtaking.
The nighttime cathedral, with fewer people, gained an added sense of tranquility.
"I want to go in and take a look." She tilted her head up and said to him beside her.
"Okay." He softly agreed.
Sophie Smith was not a devotee, but she thought, if possible, she wished to pray devoutly and hope that God could hear the wish in her heart.
"Sir, miss, are you here for a nighttime prayer?" A kindly nun in her fifties asked them.
Sophie Smith was about to answer, but Asher Land was one step ahead.
Sophie Smith looked up somewhat displeased, but she could not refute Asher Land.
He directly led her out of the church.
"I wanted to pray, why are you interfering?" she voiced her discontent.
"Ha." He chuckled coldly, "Sophie, don’t think I don’t know what you wish to pray for?"
Isn’t it just to pray to leave him?
He would never let her have her wish.
Sophie Smith felt as if her innermost thoughts had been guessed; she no longer paid attention to Asher Land and walked forward alone, with Asher Land closely behind her.
It was as if she was cursed by fate; no matter how hard she tried to escape from his side, fate just tightened their grip on each other.
In the center of the vast square, a giant fountain stood there, with droplets of water falling beautifully under the neon lights.
She was just about to approach, but he grasped her wrist.
"What Wishing Well? It’s just a broken fountain."
For some reason, upon hearing the word "wish," he felt inexplicably uneasy, afraid she might wish for something he didn’t want to hear.
"But don’t you see the English words by the side?" It clearly says Wishing Well.
"I don’t recognize it."
