I looked at her for a moment, considering how to respond. Grayfia's perspective wasn't surprising—after all, she had served some of the most powerful beings in the Underworld, where strength and authority were often the keys to everything. But for me, things were different.
With a soft sigh, I turned my gaze back to the horizon, watching as the last rays of sunlight faded over the lake.
"Trying to become a main character, are you?" Death commented with a chuck.
"Well, I thought this was the right time." I also responded to Death with a chuckle.
"You're right, Grayfia," I began. "I could have taken everything by force. I have the power, and Nazarick has the strength to rival anything the Underworld or any other realm could throw at us. But that's not the kind of person I am. Power isn't the only thing that matters to me."
Grayfia listened quietly, her expression unchanged but her eyes attentive.
"I became a student at Kuoh Academy because I wanted to experience life in the human world. I wanted to build relationships and create bonds, not just because I could, but because I wanted something real. Something genuine."
I turned to face her fully now. "Forcing someone to love me? That's not love. If I wanted servants or puppets, I could just create them."
Grayfia's eyes flickered with a hint of surprise at my words, though she remained silent.
I continue "I want Rias, Sona, Akeno, Issei, Asia, and even you, Grayfia, to choose to be with me, not because I forced you, but because you genuinely want to be."
She was quiet for a moment, processing my words. Then she spoke, her voice softer now. "And that's why you've been so patient with us? Because you're waiting for us to make our own decisions?"
I nodded. "Exactly. I'm not here to conquer the Underworld or bend it to my will. I'm here to build something real. Something lasting. That's why I spend time with each of you, learning about you, and understanding you. It's not about conquest—it's about connection."
Grayfia's expression shifted, a subtle but noticeable softening in her normally stoic demeanour. She looked back at the sunset, her gaze thoughtful.
"I see," she murmured. "It's... unexpected, I'll admit. Most people in your position would have taken the easy route, using their power to get what they want."
I smiled gently. "Maybe. But that's not who I am. I don't want just anyone by my side—I want people who care for me, who understand me, and who choose to be with me."
Grayfia fell silent again, and for a moment, we stood in comfortable quiet, the gentle rustling of leaves and the distant calls of the forest creatures filling the space between us.
The golden light of the sunset was slowly giving way to dusk, casting a serene, almost ethereal glow over the landscape.
"Thank you for answering me honestly," Grayfia finally said, her voice soft but sincere. "It's... a perspective I hadn't considered before."
