But that was just a dream, a dream too illusory to withstand even a slight touch without shattering into pieces!
The car stopped at a fountain square, surrounded by a crowd of people. Brilliant lights illuminated the area, where many couples sat hand in hand by the fountain, chatting, sharing feelings, and pouring out their hearts...
The two of them got out of the car and stood still, not moving towards the crowd. Chang Linsheng looked at her, his gaze as deep and inscrutable as an invisible well.
A jolt shot through Yang Su’s heart and she retreated two steps to lean against the car door involuntarily!
"My apartment is nearby the Fountain Square. Have you thought about visiting me again?"
Biting her lips and trying to steady her heart, Yang Su was about to reply when she was abruptly pressed inbetween the man and the car!
"Tell me, what do you love about me?"
Being so close, their breaths intertwining, Yang Su looked at the man’s face, and felt a surge of bitterness and outrage welling up from her chest, making her eyes red with unshed tears. "Does loving someone need a reason?"
"Of course!" Chang Linsheng’s cool fingers touched her fair cheek, his eyes more profound and inscrutable than ever before!
"Because I’m stupid! Is that enough?"
Tears welled up in Yang Su’s eyes as she spoke. Chang Linsheng’s eyes quavered when he saw her tear up and move to push him away; he quickly caught her wrist and pressed her against the car!
Her breath hitching, Yang Su closed her eyes, expecting him to kiss her!
But he didn’t. All she could feel was the faint scent of tobacco wafting around her nose; his kiss never landed.
Opening her eyes, Yang Su felt an even stronger surge of sadness washing over her!
"Silly girl, are you planning to play the mistress? Don’t forget, I’m a married man!"
Yang Su’s heart twinged as she looked at him, a mix of defiance and helplessness in her eyes. She had rushed back from K City, but for what? To not give up?
And then what? To become a mistress?
No, that’s not it. She just had some questions for him. Yes, just some questions!
"So tell me, why is your wife abroad? What happened between you two?"
The nearby fountain churned out a spray of water, beautifully lit in a myriad of colors, but Yang Su saw none of it. Her eyes held only him, only him!
She saw his pupils shift subtly and the fingers around her wrist loosen. By the time she reacted, he had already let her go!
Yang Su’s body trembled; if she hadn’t braced herself against the car, she feared she would collapse!
Chang Linsheng turned around, took a pack of cigarettes from his pocket, lit one, took a deep drag, and finally said, "This doesn’t seem to concern you!"
Yang Su took a deep breath, watching the man’s indifferent silhouette, not sure what to feel. Sadness?
That word seemed too inadequate. It was complicated. Very complicated!
"How can it not concern me? Otherwise why would you bring me here? Why would you tell me your apartment is nearby? Why would you ask me if I’ve thought it through?"
Chang Linsheng turned to look at her and after a long silence a hint of a smile pulled at his thin lips. "Are you saying that I am scaring you, that I am trying to force you to give up on me in this way? Are all you young girls from the Chinese Department so imaginative? Yang Su, I’m not as noble as you think! The only reason I didn’t touch you is out of respect for Yinchu, as you are his wife’s friend. If it were any other girl I wasn’t acquainted with, I wouldn’t hesitate. Who’d refuse a free offering?"
"Then, just treat me like any other girl you don’t know! I dare it, do you?"
Yang Su’s fingers tightened, her words holding a sense of authority. She was gambling, betting that Chang Linsheng had feelings for her, betting that he was lying to her!
Chang Linsheng turned around, the black in his eyes darkening further. He approached her, grabbed her hand, opened the car door, and pushed her in. "Girl, you better not regret this!"
Nanxi’s heart was in a turmoil ever since Yang Su left her. Holding Lu Yinchu’s hand in a cold sweat, she was nervous!
"Hey, Lu Yinchu, do you think Susu will be okay?"
Lu Yinchu furrowed his brow, not responding.
Last time, he was certain Chang Linsheng would reject Yang Su, but this time, he wasn’t so sure!
Chang Linsheng always acted decisively, not leaving any trouble for himself. In some ways, he was even more ruthless than him!
He didn’t know why Chang Linsheng was maintaining such an ambiguous marriage, but he was sure that if Chang Linsheng wanted a divorce, nothing would be impossible for him!
So, what was he concerned about? Did he still have lingering feelings for his wife, Chu Qing?
In the past, Lu Yinchu would’ve thought not, but now, he wasn’t so sure!
When a man is willing to maintain a relationship with a woman through thick and thin for a lifetime, there has to be a reason.
That reason might not be love, but it could very well be love!
Had he misread the situation?
It was half-past ten, an hour since Yang Su and Chang Linsheng left, and they still hadn’t returned.
Worried about Yang Su, Nanxi picked up her phone to call her.
But there was no answer on the other end!
Filled with even more concern, Nanxi asked Lu Yinchu to call Chang Linsheng.
However, no one answered Chang Linsheng’s phone either.
"So they’re together right now, aren’t they?"
Lu Yinchu frowned but didn’t speak.
"Will Susu be in any danger? Where have they gone? What are they doing?"
After asking, Nanxi quickly covered her mouth.
In the middle of the night, a man and a woman both ignoring their phones, where could they possibly be? What could they possibly be doing?
It seemed like there was no need to guess!
