Pokemon: A Gym Leader's Rise(SI) Chapter 29

The Vortex family living room was thick with tension. Gladion and Gwen stood at opposite ends, eyes locked in a fierce stare-down. Between them, on the coffee table, sat a mysterious Pokémon egg.

Their father, Ben, had brought the egg home as a surprise, but with a twist – only one of the twins would get to keep it. His exact words still rang in their ears: "You two decide who gets it. Consider it a lesson in negotiation and conflict resolution."

Now, as their parents watched from the sidelines, the twins were anything but resolving their conflict peacefully.

"I should get the egg," Gladion declared, crossing his arms. "I've got more experience raising Pokémon. Remember how I helped Feebas evolve?"

Gwen scoffed, rolling her eyes dramatically. "Oh please, that was just dumb luck. I'm clearly the more nurturing one. The egg would be happier with me!"

"Nurturing? You can barely keep a houseplant alive!"

"That's because plants are boring! A Pokémon egg is different!"

Their voices grew louder with each exchange, the insults becoming more childish by the second.

"Well, I'm older!" Gladion shouted.

"By like, two minutes!" Gwen retorted.

"ENOUGH!" Erza's voice cut through the argument like a hot knife through butter. Both twins fell silent immediately, turning to face their mother with wide eyes.

Erza pinched the bridge of her nose, exhaling slowly. "This is getting us nowhere. If you two can't decide civilly, then we'll settle this the traditional way." A small smile played on her lips. "With a Pokémon battle."

The twins' eyes lit up simultaneously.

"Now you're talking!" Gladion grinned.

"Prepare to lose, brother dear," Gwen smirked.

Ben chuckled, shaking his head. "Alright then, let's take this outside. One-on-one battle, and the winner gets the egg. Deal?"

"Deal!" the twins chorused.

Minutes later, they stood facing each other in the backyard, the egg safely tucked away inside. Erza took her place as the referee, while Ben sat on the porch, an amused smile on his face.

"This will be a one-on-one battle between Gladion and Gwen," Erza announced. "The winner will receive the mystery Pokémon egg. Are both trainers ready?"

Gladion nodded, enlarging a Pokéball. "More than ready."

Gwen mirrored his action, her eyes gleaming with determination. "Born ready."

"Then let the battle begin!"

"Machoke, let's go!" Gladion called, throwing his Pokéball.

"Haunter, show time!" Gwen shouted.

In twin flashes of light, Machoke and Haunter appeared on the battlefield. Machoke flexed its muscles, while Haunter cackled mischievously.

Gwen's confident smirk faltered slightly as she eyed Machoke. She knew Gladion had been training intensively with his Pokémon, and despite the type advantage, this wouldn't be an easy win.

"Ladies first," Gladion said with a mock bow.

"Such a gentleman," Gwen rolled her eyes. "Haunter, start things off with Shadow Ball!"

Haunter formed a pulsing sphere of ghostly energy, launching it at Machoke.

"Machoke, dodge and use Bulk Up!" Gladion commanded.

With surprising agility for its size, Machoke leapt to the side, the Shadow Ball whizzing past. Its muscles then bulged as it powered up.

"Now, use Thunder Punch!"

Electricity crackled around Machoke's fist as it charged towards Haunter.

"Quick, Haunter! Use Hypnosis!"

Haunter's eyes glowed, sending out hypnotic waves. But Machoke closed its eyes, continuing its charge blindly.

"What?!" Gwen gasped as Thunder Punch connected, sending Haunter reeling.

Gladion grinned. "We've been working on fighting without relying on sight. Pretty handy against Ghost and Psychic types, don't you think?"

Gwen gritted her teeth. "Haunter, shake it off and use Night Shade!"

Dark energy pulsed from Haunter, washing over Machoke. The Fighting type grunted in pain but stood its ground.

"Machoke, use Knock Off!"

Machoke's arm glowed with dark energy as it swung at Haunter.

Haunter tried to float away, but Machoke's increased speed from Bulk Up allowed it to connect, sending Haunter tumbling through the air.

The battle continued, with Machoke consistently pushing Haunter back despite the type disadvantage. Gladion's intensive training was paying off, and Gwen found herself on the defensive.

"Haunter, come on! We can do this!" Gwen encouraged, but she could feel her confidence wavering.

As Haunter took another hit, stumbling in the air, something stirred within Gwen. A familiar energy began to pulse through her body – her Ghost aura was responding to her emotions.

Without conscious thought, Gwen's aura began to flow outwards, invisible tendrils of ghostly energy reaching towards Haunter. As they connected, Haunter's eyes widened in surprise.

Suddenly, Haunter could feel everything Gwen was feeling – her determination, her desire to win, her love for her Pokémon, and her dreams of raising the egg. These emotions flooded through Haunter, igniting something deep within.

Gladion, noticing the change in atmosphere, hesitated. "Machoke, be ready for anything!"

A brilliant light engulfed Haunter, momentarily blinding everyone in the yard. When it faded, where Haunter had floated now stood a grinning Gengar.

"Gen...GARRR" Fresh chapters posted on NoveIꜰire.net

"No way..." Gladion breathed.

"Gengar!" Gwen exclaimed, her face lighting up with joy.

'Lady Agatha's book on how to use Ghost aura to help my Pokemon really helped.' She thought

Gengar turned to Gwen, its grin widening as it gave her a thumbs up. The connection between them was palpable, their auras intertwining in a way visible only to them.

"Alright, Gengar!" Gwen called out, her confidence fully restored. "Let's show them what we can do! Shadow Ball, full power!"

Gengar formed a Shadow Ball larger than it could, the ghostly sphere pulsing with the combined power of Pokémon and trainer.

"Machoke, block it with Cross Chop!" Gladion commanded, a hint of worry in his voice.

Machoke crossed its arms, charging forward to meet the attack. The Shadow Ball collided with Machoke's Cross Chop, resulting in an explosion that shook the yard.

When the dust settled, Machoke was on one knee, panting heavily.

"Finish it with Hex!" Gwen shouted.

Before Gladion could react, waves of ghostly energy washed over Machoke. The Fighting type swayed for a moment before collapsing, swirls in its eyes.

"Machoke is unable to battle! Gengar wins, which means the victory goes to Gwen!" Erza announced.

Gwen let out a whoop of joy, running to hug her newly evolved Gengar. "We did it! You were amazing!"

Gladion recalled Machoke, patting the Pokéball gently. "You fought well, friend. We'll get them next time."

As the adrenaline of battle faded, the twins met in the middle of the yard. For a moment, they just looked at each other, a mix of emotions playing across their faces.

Finally, Gladion spoke. "That was... incredible."

Gwen smiled softly. "Thanks. I'm not entirely sure what happened, but it felt... right."

"Well," Gladion sighed, a rueful smile on his face, "I guess this means you get the egg."

To his surprise, Gwen shook her head. "Actually, I've been thinking. Maybe... maybe we could raise it together?"

Gladion's eyes widened. "Really? You'd be okay with that?"

Gwen nodded. "Yeah. After all, we're both going to be trainers soon. It might be good practice to co-parent a Pokémon egg. But that Pokemon would go on my team."

A grin spread across Gladion's face. "I'd like that."

From the porch, Ben and Erza watched their children with pride.

"Well," Ben chuckled, "that's not quite how I expected this to go, but I'd say the lesson in conflict resolution was a success."

Erza nodded, a warm smile on her face. "They're growing up so fast. Soon they'll be out there, facing the world as trainers. Gwen even managed to use her Ghost Aura to empower her Gengar. Something unheard of from a nine year old."

As the family gathered around to congratulate Gwen on her victory and Gengar's evolution, the mysterious egg sat inside, pulsing with a faint warmth. Whatever Pokémon was inside, it would be born into a loving family, with two dedicated trainers ready to guide it on its journey.
