Pokemon: A Gym Leader's Rise(SI) Chapter 33

"Focus, young one," Alakazam's voice echoed in Gladion's mind. The powerful psychic-type Pokémon hovered cross-legged in the air, his spoons floating beside him. "Your psychic energy is like a rushing river, but you're trying to use it like a fire hose."

Gladion wiped sweat from his brow, his concentration intense. They were in a secluded part of the family's training grounds, away from distractions. "I'm trying, Master Alakazam, but it's harder than it looks."

"Of course it is," Alakazam chuckled mentally. "If it were easy, everyone would be teleporting around like a bunch of Abra. Now, remember what I taught you - visualize the space you want to occupy, feel the fabric of reality, and then..." He demonstrated by smoothly teleporting across the field, "...gently slip through it."

Gladion took a deep breath, closing his eyes. His psychic energy swirled around him, visible to Alakazam's enhanced perception as a brilliant azure aura.

"Interesting," Alakazam mused to himself, watching his young student. 'His raw power rivals that of a strong Psychic Pokemon. Perhaps even greater.' The thought both excited and concerned him.

Gladion's face scrunched in concentration as he attempted to teleport. There was a flash of psychic energy, and he vanished - only to reappear three feet away, stumbling slightly.

"Well, at least you didn't end up in a tree this time," Alakazam commented dryly, remembering their first attempts at teleportation training.

"That was ONE time," Gladion protested, straightening up. "And that Pidgey was very understanding about it."

Alakazam's mustache twitched in amusement. "Indeed. Now, let's try again. Remember - finesse over force. You have the power of a Hydro Pump, but right now we need the precision of a Water Gun."

As Gladion prepared for another attempt, Alakazam reflected on his young student's progress. He had known Gladion since the boy was born, having been Ben's starter Pokémon and closest friend for decades. He had sensed the latent psychic potential in the child from day one, but even he hadn't anticipated its magnitude.

"Your telepathy is coming along nicely," Alakazam praised, switching topics momentarily. "You've mastered basic communication with both humans and Pokémon. Though I must say, your mental 'voice' still has all the subtlety of a Loudred with a megaphone."

Gladion grinned sheepishly. "Sorry about that headache I gave dad last week. I didn't mean to mentally shout about breakfast."

"Ah yes, the Great Pancake Incident of Year XXXX. I believe your father's exact words were 'It felt like a Psyduck was having a crisis in my cerebrum.'"

They both laughed at the memory, though Alakazam quickly brought them back to focus. "Now, for this next attempt at teleportation, I want you to try something different. Instead of forcing your way through space, try to... persuade it."

"Persuade space?" Gladion raised an eyebrow. "How do you persuade something that doesn't have a mind?"

Alakazam stroked his mustache thoughtfully. "Everything has a pattern, young one. Space, time, energy - they all dance to the same cosmic rhythm. Your psychic power isn't about dominating that dance, but joining it. Think of it like... convincing a wild Pokémon to trust you, rather than trying to overpower it."

The explanation seemed to click something in Gladion's mind. His next attempt at teleportation was smoother, covering a distance of ten feet with only minimal stumbling on landing.

"Much better!" Alakazam praised. "You're beginning to understand. Your psychic potential reminds me of another young child I once observed - Sabrina of Saffron City."

Gladion's eyes widened at the comparison. "The Psychic gym leader's daughter?" Read full story at novelFire.net

Of course, Gladion was just acting. He knew who Sabrina was and how strong of a Psychic she was.

"Indeed," Alakazam nodded. "She too possesses remarkable raw power at her age. Though her abilities manifested differently - she excelles at telepathy and telekinesis from the start, while you seem to have a natural affinity for spatial manipulation along with telekinesis."

He paused, considering his next words carefully. "Like you, she also has to learn to control her power, to refine it. Raw strength without control is like having a Gyarados but no way to direct it."

Gladion absorbed this information, his expression thoughtful. "Is that why you're teaching me meditation and control exercises?"

"Precisely," Alakazam confirmed. "Your psychic energy is like a vast ocean, but right now you're trying to direct it with a paper cup. We need to build proper channels for that power."

They continued practicing, with Gladion making steady progress. By the end of the session, he could consistently teleport short distances with reasonable accuracy.

"Well done," Alakazam said as they wrapped up their training. "You've made significant progress today. Though I must admit, watching you learn teleportation has been... entertaining."

"You're never going to let me forget about the tree incident, are you?"

"Never," Alakazam's mental voice carried a distinct tone of amusement. "Though I must say, that Pidgey's expression when you materialized in its nest was priceless."

As they headed back to the house, Alakazam continued his private observations. The boy's potential was remarkable, perhaps even exceeding that of Young Sabrina. But unlike Sabrina, who seems to be struggling with the emotional aspects of her powers (information that he had heard from a Aura researcher who was na acquaintance of Ben), Gladion seemed to have a natural balance between his psychic abilities and his humanity.

"One more thing before we end today's session," Alakazam said, stopping Gladion before they reached the house. "I want you to try something. Reach out with your mind - not to me, but to the space around you. What do you feel?"

Gladion closed his eyes, extending his psychic senses as instructed. After a moment, his eyes snapped open in surprise. "It's... like I can feel the fabric of everything. The air, the ground, the spaces in between... they're all connected!"

"Exactly," Alakazam nodded approvingly. "That understanding is the key to true mastery of spatial manipulation using your psychic prowess. Remember this feeling - it will help guide your future training."

As they finally headed inside, Alakazam sent one last private thought toward his student: "You have great potential, young one. Greater than you know. But remember - with great power comes great responsibility... and occasionally, unexpected visits to Pidgey nests."

Gladion's mental groan in response only made Alakazam's mustache twitch more in amusement. Yes, teaching this boy was proving to be one of the most interesting challenges of his long life. He couldn't wait to see what the future held for his promising young student.

"Master Alakazam?" Gladion's mental voice interrupted his musings. "Do you think I'll ever be as strong as you in Psychic prowess?"

Alakazam considered the question carefully before responding. "No, young one. I think you'll be stronger - in your own unique way. But remember, true strength isn't just about power. It's about wisdom, control, and knowing when to use that power."

With that final piece of wisdom imparted, they returned to the house, where the smell of dinner and the sounds of family life awaited them. Another successful day of training completed, though Alakazam made a mental note to warn the local Pidgey population before their next teleportation practice session. Just in case.
