Pokemon: A Gym Leader's Rise(SI) Chapter 61

Before the battle could start, Gladion brought Zeus outside his Pokeball.

The young Elekid's eyes were wide, sparking with an intensity that matched the gym's atmosphere as he looked at the electric type Pokemon that were with the Gym trainers in the stands.

Gladion had brought him out with a specific purpose - to learn, to observe, to understand what it truly meant to be a high-level electric-type Pokémon.

Gladion knelt down beside Zeus, his voice serious and instructive. The young Elekid looked up at his trainer, ears perked with curiosity.

"Zeus," Gladion began, "this isn't just a gym battle. This is a masterclass in electric-type battling."

Lt. Surge's reputation preceded him. A veteran of the Pokémon War, he was known for his ruthless electric-type Pokémon. His Pokémon weren't just fighters; they were weapons refined through years of intense military discipline.

"See that?" Gladion pointed to the array of electric-type Pokémon near Surge's corner. "Lt. Surge doesn't just train Pokémon. He transforms them into living weapons. Something that you want to become. Maybe you can get some insights or inspirations from watching this match."

Zeus's eyes widened as he enthusiastically nodded.

"Electric-type battling isn't just about raw power," Gladion explained. "It's about precision, control, and strategic energy management. You will learn it from this match."

"Lt. Surge's electric Pokémon are known for their ability to control electrical output with millimeter-level precision. Watch how they modulate their attacks - not just power, but frequency, intensity, and distribution."

Lt. Surge, overhearing part of the conversation, raised an eyebrow. Most young trainers would be intimidated by him and his pokemon, but this kid was giving a lecture to his Elekid. Find the newest release on novel·fire·net

Zeus began to vibrate with excitement, small sparks dancing between his arms. The young Elekid understood this was more than a battle - it was a learning opportunity for him.

"Pay attention to three things," Gladion instructed. "First, energy conservation. Surge's Pokémon never waste electricity and thus their energy. Second, attack precision. They can target specific points with microscopic electrical discharges. Third, psychological warfare - using electrical displays to intimidate opponents."

Lt. Surge couldn't help but chuckle. The kid was giving a doctoral-level lecture on electric-type battling to an Elekid who looked like he was hanging onto every word.

"This battle," Gladion's voice dropped to a whisper, "is your textbook. Your chance to see what you could become."

Zeus's eyes gleamed with determination. Small arcs of electricity began dancing around his body, a physical manifestation of his growing excitement and understanding.

As they turned their attention back to the battlefield, Zeus stood a little straighter, his entire being focused on learning from the upcoming battle.

Lt. Surge caught Gladion's eye and gave a slight nod of respect. The Elekid looked well trained and the lecture was quite good too.

The battle was about to begin, and both trainer and Pokémon were ready.

Lt. Surge studied the young trainer, his military-trained mind already analyzing every detail. The boy's confidence was unusual for his age. Most ten-year-old trainers would be intimidated by a gym battle, especially against a veteran like himself. But this kid? He was different.

The moments before a gym battle were always sacred to Lt. Surge. These weren't just matches - they were assessments, trials of potential that went far beyond simple Pokémon combat.

'Vortex,' he thought, studying the young trainer before him. 'That name carries weight.'

Memories of Maren Vortex flooded his mind. The old man had been a legend during the Pokémon War - a trainer whose reputation transcended typical battlefield prowess. Surge remembered the stories: Maren wasn't just a soldier, he was a force of nature. Both Pokémon and men followed him not out of fear, but out of profound respect.

'And then there's Erza,' Surge's mind continued its assessment. Erza Vortex was perhaps the most formidable fire-type specialist in Kanto alongside Elite Four member Blaine.

He studied Gladion carefully. The boy was young - ten, maybe eleven - but there was something unusual in his eyes. Not the typical wide-eyed enthusiasm of a new trainer, but a depth of understanding that seemed... out of place.

'The way he's coaching that Elekid,' Surge thought, 'that's not a child's approach. That's strategic thinking.'

The pre-battle interactions told a story. Gladion wasn't just preparing for a gym battle - he was turning this into a learning experience. For his Pokémon, for himself. It reminded Surge of Maren's training philosophy: Every battle is a lesson, every challenge an opportunity to grow.

'Will he be worthy of the Vortex name?' The question hung in Surge's mind like static electricity.

Maren had been a war hero. Erza was a specialist who could potentially challenge the Elite Four. Ben was a renowned researcher anda breeder. The bar was impossibly high.

But something about this young trainer sparked Surge's interest. The confident stance. The gleam in his eyes.

'Maybe,' Surge thought, a small smile forming, 'just maybe, this kid has something special. Not like the other fools that come to challenge me.'

'Let's find out,' Surge decided. 'The battlefield doesn't lie.'

'Prove yourself, kid,' he thought, watching Gladion. 'Show me you're a Vortex.'

The referee's voice cut through the tension. "This will be a 3-versus-3 Pokémon battle for a 6-star badge challenge. Trainers, are you ready?"

Gladion's response was immediate. "Always."

Surge's lips curled into a half-smile. 'Let's see what you're made of, kid.'

"Guy, center stage!" Gladion called out.

Machoke burst onto the battlefield with a muscular flourish. He flexed his muscles, striking a pose that was part bodybuilder, part martial arts master. "YOUTH!" he seemed to proclaim with his entire being.

Lt. Surge couldn't suppress a chuckle as an Electrode came out of his Pokeball.

The referee raised his flags. "Battle... BEGIN!"

"Electrode, Rollout!" Surge commanded.

The spherical Pokémon began spinning, building momentum as it headed straight towards Guy.

'Too predictable,' Gladion thought

"Guy, Catch him," Gladion's voice was calm, almost casual.

The Machoke's muscles tensed. His eyes tracked the spinning Electrode with laser-like precision.

As Electrode approached at breakneck speed in front of the Machoke, Guy's arms spread wide. Instead of moving, he planted his feet, creating a human - or rather, Pokémon - wall of muscle in front of the rolling giant Pokeball.

Surge's eyes widened. "What the—"

The Electrode slammed into Guy's waiting arms. For a split second, everything seemed to pause. Then Guy's hands closed around the spinning Pokémon, stopping its momentum completely.

"Now, Guy! Fire Punch!" Gladion's command rang out.

In that impossibly undodgable close range, Guy's fist erupted with flames. The fire type move, launched at point-blank range, combined with the electrical energy of the Electrode created a spectacular explosion of light and energy.

When the smoke cleared, Electrode lay defeated.

Among the gym's junior trainers, whispers began.

"Did you see that?" one muttered. "That Machoke just caught a rolling Electrode like it was nothing!"

"That Machoke is built for strength. And that Fire Punch... it was perfectly timed," another added.

Gladion's voice cut through the murmurs. "One down, Gym leader Surge. Ready to show me what a real Gym Leader can do?"

Lt. Surge's serious battle face replaced his earlier amusement. "Don't get cocky, kid. This battle's just getting started."

Zeus, watching from the sideline, couldn't help but vibrate with excitement. 'This is what a real battle looks like,' he thought. 'This is what I want to become.'
