Kai wasn't thinking clearly. The fruit wine from last night still lingered in his veins, clouding his judgment. And as he stood there, Maya's soft hand in his, her golden eyes locked on his, he found himself struggling between emotion and restraint.
Her robe slipped to the floor with a whisper.
Two handmaidens exchanged a knowing glance, then silently exited the room, closing the door behind them.
And just like that, the night unraveled.
In the Sea Temple's banquet hall, Ash, Brock, Erika, and Shu were finishing breakfast.
Their bags were already packed and neatly stacked nearby. With the Whirl Cup over and Silver safe, their next destination awaited new cities, new badges, and new battles.
But one person hadn't shown up.
"Where's Kai?" Misty asked, glancing toward the guest wing.
"He didn't come back last night," Erika replied, sipping her tea. Her voice was calm, but there was a glint of quiet suspicion in her eyes.
"Do you think something happened?" Shu asked.
Before anyone could answer, the sound of footsteps echoed from the far hallway.
They turned and there he was.
Kai walked in with Maya at his side. She wore her usual serene smile. He… looked like he hadn't slept at all.
Ash jumped up. "Kai! How'd the inheritance ceremony go?"
Kai nearly choked. His face twitched, and he coughed to cover his reaction.
Before he could reply, Maya gently answered for him.
"It was successful," she said with a soft smile. "Thanks to Kai, everything went perfectly."
Misty's eyes narrowed slightly.
Something felt… different. There was a new closeness between them. Subtle, but unmistakable.
She asked, "So… what kind of ceremony was it, exactly?"
Maya answered calmly, "It's a sacred rite passed down for generations. Only Sea Guardians who are truly courageous and chosen by the ocean itself are eligible to take part."
Ash's eyes sparkled. "Ah, I wish I'd gotten to see it! I was too busy eating…"
Kai almost dropped his glass.
'No, Ash. Trust me. You did NOT want to see that…'
He looked down at his plate, pushing the food around absently.
The guilt was starting to sink in.
Last night… he'd crossed a line.
Maya had offered him everything status, secrecy, and no strings. But even with her quiet nobility and graceful strength, he couldn't ignore what he'd done.
He thought of Sabrina.
Then he thought of Erika smiling, innocent, waiting just a few feet away.
"Morning, Kai," Erika said, walking over to him. "You look exhausted. You okay?"
He nodded slowly. "Yeah… just didn't sleep well."
She placed a hand on his arm. "You need to take better care of yourself."
Her touch made him flinch just slightly.
"Yeah… I'll be fine after some rest."
But inside, he was falling apart.
The group stood together at the Island's dock. The Sea Temple loomed in the background, its white spires glowing faintly in the morning sun.
It was time to part ways.
Kai and Erika would head toward to challenge the next Gym. Shu was returning to his island. Ritchie, Ash, Misty, and Brock had their own roads to follow.
One by one, the group began to say their goodbyes.
"Take care, guys!" Ritchie called, climbing aboard the ferry that would return him to Kanto. "We'll meet again!"
"We'll be waiting," Kai said with a wave.
Shu was next. He untied his small boat and looked back with a grin. "I'll see you around! Tell Silver I said hi!"
Ash, Misty, and Brock hopped aboard with him. Their paths aligned for now.
Kai nodded. "Be safe out there."
With the dock growing quieter, only Kai, Erika, and Maya remained.
Maya stepped forward, her voice low. "Just as I said… this path will not be easy. And I may need your help again, someday."
Kai didn't meet her gaze. He simply nodded.
"I'll come if I'm needed. And… if anything happens, let me know. I won't turn my back."
Her smile was gentle. "I understand. You should go now."
As Kai turned to leave, he caught a glimpse of red near her collar.
He remembered leaving that mark.
Maya said nothing. Neither did he.
But Erika, standing silently nearby, had noticed the lingering tension. She didn't ask. She didn't say a word.
She just stood there waiting, watching.
And as they stepped aboard their boat together, heading toward the horizon…
Kai could only wonder how long it would take before the past caught up to him.
