After the Pokémon battle was over, Senior Sister took Chris to take a photo with Ralts.
She probably wanted to show off in her circle of friends.
Ralts didn't mind, and Chris let them take the picture.

Back at the hotel, Chris laid down on the bed.
He turned on his handheld console. The game's protagonist was still in Dewford Town, grinding on the first floor of Granite Cave.
As Chris leveled up, he muttered, "The odds of encountering a shiny Pokémon must have been altered. How else could I have been grinding for days without finding a single one?"
After exploring Granite Cave for hours, battling over 600 Pokémon in one day, and around 3,000 encounters in total, he still hadn't found a shiny Geodude.
"You're a grown console now. You've got to learn to dodge on your own!"
Just as he was complaining, a Pokémon with red gloves appeared on the screen.
Red gloves reminded him of Hitmonchan.
But the Pokémon in front of him was a "Makuhita," a pudgy little fighter with a determined expression and a silly look.
Ordinary Makuhita had black gloves, which meant this one was a Shiny Pokémon!
"Finally!" Chris wondered if complaining had somehow made the console deliver a shiny.
Unfortunately, Shiny Makuhita wasn't the one he was hoping for.
If it had been Abra or Zubat, and they had good stats, he could've made them part of his main team. Even a shiny Geodude could have evolved into a powerful Golem.
But this Makuhita? It would probably end up as just a mascot in his lineup.
After catching the Shiny Ralts, this ordinary Shiny didn't excite Chris much.
He threw a Poké Ball without hesitation.
The little fighter was cooperative, staying in the ball after just two throws.
Chris opened its stats screen.

It had 3 perfect IVs in HP, Attack, and Speed.
Not bad, but the ideal IVs for a Makuhita would prioritize HP, Attack, Defense, and Special Defense.
Makuhita's evolution, Hariyama, had high attack and HP, making it a good "tank" if it had solid defenses. But even then, it couldn't compare to tanks like Aggron or Snorlax.
As for its speed and special attack stats, they didn't really matter for Makuhita.
Forget it, it's just a mascot anyway.
Chris tossed Makuhita into the PC without a second thought.
"Let Professor Birch take care of you for now," he muttered.
When he had more funds, he could bring Makuhita back to play with when he replaced the weaker team members.
For Pokémon Trainers, collecting is the ultimate motivation.
"I could go without a shiny, but I *have* to have it!"
Before sending Makuhita to the PC, Chris removed the "Black Belt" from it and equipped it on Torchic.
"It's a shame there's no Thief move in this game; otherwise, getting rich wouldn't just be a dream," Chris said with a sigh.
Pokémon-held items were never cheap, and right now, he had a Black Belt.
It wasn't the standard Black Belt that gave a 20% boost to Fighting-type moves, which was valued at 100,000 pokedollars. The one with a 10% boost was still worth about 50,000.
When Chris first arrived on Dewford Island to search for resources, he had received a Silk Scarf from an NPC, boosting Normal-type moves by 15%.

"Want to grab lunch together? I've got a few friends coming along too."
"Are they cute? I'm not coming if they're not cute."
Amy glanced over at her petite and adorable roommate. "Yeah, second only to me."
"Worse than you? Then I'm definitely not coming."
"Stop messing around. My roommate's not bad, okay? I'm at the snack street by West Lake. Get over here!" she said before hanging up the phone without giving Chris a chance to reply.
With no real reason to refuse an invitation from a high school classmate, especially one from a beautiful girl, Chris got up from the bed.
After changing into a fresh set of clothes, he headed downstairs, caught a taxi, and made his way to the snack street by West Lake.
