Lin Yan turned back unhurriedly, glanced at Jiang Lai, and asked her.
"If you didn’t sleep well, go back and rest for a while."
"No need, brother, I’ll go with you and take a look."

Lin Yan headed to the laboratory, instructing Jiang Lai not to wander around and gave her a serum injection.
"If you can’t handle it, throw it away, don’t be reckless."
"Am I the first to use this thing?"
"Yes."
"What did Andre and Gu Han Yan come to you for last night?"
"They wanted a sample, but I haven’t given it yet."
Jiang Lai nodded, and took a few more back to give to Jiang Chao and Yan Zhouxing.
People outside the city walls were still in the dark, while the inside of the base was already in a state of panic.
On the base’s city wall, several Superpower Users looked anxiously at the situation below, especially Yang Jun and Duan Xu. After all, down there were people they knew from living together previously, friends they got along well with. Now, with the zombie tide approaching, they sat oblivious, waiting for death. Yang Jun wanted to take action, but beside him, Gu Han Yan remained silent.
"Han Yan, why not tell Andre to let them in to take shelter? Once the zombie tide passes, we can send them out, right?"
Gu Han Yan smiled.
"The zombie tide is coming for them. If they can’t get food, they won’t leave easily. Letting them in will only trap everyone inside the base, with more zombies gathering outside."
"But we can’t just watch them die like this! In ten minutes, they won’t be able to get away."
The vanguard of the zombie tide consisted entirely of second, third, and even fourth-level mutated zombies, exceptionally fast and intelligent. Once targeted by them, death was certain.
Seeing many unable to bear it, Gu Han Yan feigned a look at Andre, asking him.
"Leader, what do you think?"
"You’re right, send someone down to drive them away, and draw the zombie tide away along with them."
Upon hearing this, Yang Jun and the others instantly became enraged. They hadn’t expected Andre to say something so cruel; those below were some of the few remaining humans. Opening the gate would save so many lives, but Andre remained cold-blooded and unfeeling.
"This won’t do... we need to get them to leave quickly."
Yang Jun looked at the people below, living normal lives, some of whom had shared drinks and fought zombies with him. They were good people, deserving to live on.
"We can’t use a loudspeaker now, it’ll attract more zombies. Someone needs to go out and tell them how serious the situation is."
Everyone fell silent.
Who would go out at a time like this? What if they couldn’t come back?
Who would take on that risk?
"I’ll go!"
Yang Jun turned and left without hesitation, Duan Xu briefly glanced at Gu Han Yan before quickly following.
As Jiang Lai and Jiang Chao brought over a group of Superpower Users, chaos had already erupted under the tents.
Yang Jun and Duan Xu moved between the tents, urging each person to leave quickly, with little effect, as most people’s first thought upon hearing the zombie tide was only ten minutes away was to get into the base.
"Let us in to hide!!"
"Run? How? Second-level zombies move faster than cars. We don’t even have a car here with so many people, how can we run?!"
Panic spread throughout the tent area, and many were already banging frantically on the base’s gate.
"Let us in, let us in!!"
"I beg you, please let us in! At least let my child in!!"
Yang Jun looked at the child in the woman’s arms. He had seen the child in a photo, where a man had once kneeled on the ground, desperately begging with the photo in hand, even casting his gaze on Yang Jun in a moment of complete despair.
Back then, Yang Jun didn’t feel much, but now, seeing the child in the woman’s arms brought a surge of indescribable bitterness and guilt, almost consuming him, driving him forward without hesitation.
"Give me the child, I’ll take him in."
The woman, with red-rimmed eyes, handed over the child to Yang Jun with a look of relief, her face a blend of a mother’s reluctance and pain. What kind of situation would compel a mother to urgently send her child away?
It was the hope that her child would live on, willing to do anything—no matter how slim the chance—to fight for that hope.
"Thank you, thank you... I’ll kneel for you, I will!"
Holding the child, Yang Jun lifted his furious gaze, only to find Gu Han Yan and Andre staring at him with identical expressions: cold, impatient, and completely numb to the core.
A shiver ran through him; he couldn’t believe his eyes.
Andre and Gu Han Yan’s gazes were identical, no difference, exactly like the same person.
After a brief lapse, both of them withdrew their gaze simultaneously. As Yang Jun came back to his senses and turned around, he found that somehow a dozen more children had gathered behind him. The youngest were only a few months old, the oldest eight or nine years old, with hopeful and pleading eyes watching him.
Yang Jun stood there, stunned, momentarily at a loss.
He couldn’t bear to meet those eyes.
But no matter what, he had to get those children inside.
"Open the gate!! Let these children in!!"
The Superpower Users guarding the gate instinctively glanced towards Andre, who maintained his usual cold, numb expression, staring like an emotionless puppet at the dark mass of people below.
Opening the gate now, just to let the children in, would certainly be timely. But delaying any longer might make it too late, since those standing at a higher vantage point could already see the distant sky turned yellow with dust.
"Hurry!! Less than five minutes left!!"
Yang Jun pounded the gate forcefully.
"Open the gate!! Didn’t you hear me say open it!!"
The gatekeepers, at the brink of breaking, were about to open the gate when suddenly Andre, usually silent and indifferent, looked at them with a gaze so cold and terrifying, it seemed as though he’d throw them out the next second.
Everyone fell silent in fear.
Andre was the leader, holding the serum samples, and none dared oppose him, so they could only lower their heads, avoiding the eyes of those outside.
The ground beneath shook, terrifying roars and screams felt right behind their ears, and everyone couldn’t help covering their ears, panic etched on their faces. Realizing the gate wouldn’t open again, those with cars rushed to flee in the opposite direction.
The rest, unable to get in a car or through the gate, stood at the entrance in helpless despair, wailing and hopelessly pleading with those inside, clinging to one last thread of hope.
