Lu Yiting finally understood why her two sisters-in-law were so insistent with their instructions, and she smiled as she waved them off, “I know, I’m leaving.”
When Kong Xiangrui and Lu Yiting returned to the Kong family home, the two sisters-in-law had dark expressions. They had just been infuriated by the mother-in-law’s words, saying that both their families combined weren’t as good as the youngest brother’s family, just look at the things he brought back.
Now, as they saw Lu Yiting come in, the eldest sister-in-law Bai Liping spoke with some sarcasm, “Bringing back gifts really does make a difference, you walk around with such a straight back, not needing to do any work, just waiting to eat what’s ready. It really takes some nerve.”
Lu Yiting didn’t care what she said; after all, her words were true. If the mother-in-law hadn’t seen the gifts she brought back today, and also taking into account that she was pregnant, there would have been no chance she’d be exempt from work.
So, she merely smiled warmly, “Big Sister, Second Sister, you have worked hard. These gifts were all prepared by my second sister-in-law back home. Actually, I feel a bit embarrassed, but my second sister-in-law insisted that I bring them. She also said that as a younger sister-in-law, I should be pampered and cherished.”
Bai Liping was infuriated by these words. What could she possibly say? It’s not her fault she doesn’t have a good family to marry into.
Kong Xiangrui glanced at his elder sister-in-law and said, “Yiting is pregnant and can’t stand the smell of cooking oil. Today, we’ll have to trouble Big Sister and Second Sister.”
After speaking, he took Yiting back to their own room.
Bai Liping became even angrier. The vegetables she was cutting were ruined by her rough handling, a scene that Fu Lanhua happened to witness as she walked in.
“Bai Liping, what are you doing? You’re ruining perfectly good vegetables. If you have a complaint, just voice it. Why take it out on the food?”
This outburst startled the men in the house, who were chatting, and brought them to the kitchen.

As she looked at the vegetables on the cutting board, she opened her mouth to explain, but Fu Lanhua didn’t give her a chance to speak, “Even if you have complaints, you shouldn’t do this. What have these ingredients done to you? If you’re angry, take it out on me.”
Eldest Brother Kong Xiangru saw that his wife was being scolded by their mother again, “Mom, with the new year’s celebration upon us, aren’t you afraid the neighbors will laugh at us? Can’t we discuss things peacefully?”
Hearing her son side with his wife, criticizing her, Fu Lanhua couldn’t just stand by.
She pulled him into the kitchen, pointing at the vegetables on the cutting board, “Are you blind? Look at what your wife has done to the youngest brother’s vegetables, isn’t this a waste? And I can’t even say anything about it? I really don’t want to live like this anymore.”
Kong Cunlai came over, glanced at the cutting board, and said, “Enough, it’s the new year, why all the tears?”
After speaking, he glared at his eldest son, “If you don’t even want to spend the festival with us, then from now on, don’t bother. Everyone can live their own lives.”
This left Kong Xiangru dumbfounded. He didn’t have that intention at all. Looking at the vegetables on the cutting board, he slapped Bai Liping hard, “All day long, you do nothing but cause trouble.”
About to burst, Bai Liping retorted, “Kong Xiangru, why did you hit me? I’m working myself to death here, and now I’m also wrong? Everyone’s acting so smug, just because of the vegetables the third brother and sister brought back? Are you all seriously making such a fuss over this?”
At this point, Kong Xiangrui was truly fed up. He hardly returned home once a year, and every time it was filled with quarrels over various issues. He had had enough, especially now when Yiting was pregnant. Was it really wrong to bring gifts back home?
He made sure Yiting lay down to rest, then stepped outside, “Big Sister, you can argue all you want, but why drag Yiting into it? Is she wrong to bring things home? Earlier, you were sarcastic towards Yiting, and now you’re still involving her. You’re really something.”
Seeing his elder brother’s changed demeanor, Second Brother Kong Xianglin knew trouble was brewing and quickly intervened, “Okay, are we going to have the New Year’s Eve dinner or not? Let’s all say less.”
But today, Bai Liping was obstinate and unyielding, bluntly refusing to back down, “What New Year’s Eve dinner? Didn’t Dad just say that from now on, everyone will eat separately?”
Saying this, she walked out of the kitchen, straight back to her own home, and started preparing the dough and chopping meat to make dumplings.
Leaving the second son and his wife awkwardly standing there, Hao Chunyan held the vegetables in her hand, uncertain whether she should continue sorting them; Kong Xianglin didn’t expect his elder sister to leave without giving any face.
