Thinking to herself that if there really were no suitable houses nearby, a slightly further one would do as well, Luo Qiao figured that in the worst case scenario, she could just take the bus to school or perhaps buy a car so she could take the kids out on weekends.

Her first stop was the bicycle rental shop outside campus, where she rented a bike and then rode around the area. Whenever she encountered elderly locals, she would greet them and inquire about any housing opportunities in the vicinity.
After a whole morning without finding a suitable house – which was quite disappointing – she thought of dealing with her phone issues, having only rushed to send a quick message of safety to her family the day before. Today she would call them again and be sure to give them her number.
So she cycled to the cell phone store. As she was prepared, it didn’t take long for her to make a choice. Before coming, she had exchanged quite a lot of US dollars and kept them on her.
After handling everything, she suppressed the excitement in her heart, remembering it was the middle of the night back home, and left the store.
Leaving the phone store, she stumbled upon a Chinese restaurant, which cheered her up considerably. She felt a rush of excitement, locked her bike, and went inside.
Spotting the girl at the front desk, she felt a surge of kinship and approached, “Hello, fellow countryman.”
The girl, who had been looking down at her orders, suddenly heard someone speaking Chinese, looked up abruptly, and beamed, “Hello, fellow countryman.”
Both smiled and the girl asked, “Where are you from, and when did you arrive?”
Luo Qiao smiled softly, “From Capital City in China, I just arrived in Boston yesterday.”
“Are you here to study or for a visit?”
“Studying.”
“How impressive! Which school are you attending?”
“Harvard Medical School.”
The person gave Loki Qiao a thumbs-up, welcoming her to sit down: “My name is Xie Minghua, you can call me Alisa. I am from Fujian, but I came here with my grandfather when I was very young and don’t have much memory of my hometown.”
“My name is Luo Qiao. The motherland is thriving, you should visit when you have the chance.”
“Meeting a fellow countryman here truly makes me happy. I’ll treat you to this meal.”
