Gao Taohua became anxious and pushed the door open, pleading, “Brother Lu, don’t deceive people. If you had a fiancée, you wouldn’t come to our place. Besides, you’re still limping now. I, as a female comrade, don’t despise you; what’s there for you to be unwilling about?”
This only caused Lu Yichen’s temper to flare up even more. He bit back the urge to kick her out and said instead, “You have bad breath.”
After hearing Lu Yichen’s remark, Gao Taohua glared at him before covering her face and running away.
After finishing her meal and cleaning up, Luo Qiao planned to bring a fish over to the brigade commander’s house as a token of gratitude for their recent help. She happened to overhear Gao Taohua’s conversation with Lu Yichen, which nearly caused her to choke with laughter.
She snickered, her shoulders shaking, and waited for Lu Yichen to enter his yard before planning her exit to avoid the embarrassment of being caught eavesdropping by the people involved.
While she was entertaining herself, she heard Lu Yichen say, “How much longer do you plan to stand there?”
Looking around, Luo Qiao saw no one else.
Amused and frustrated, Lu Yichen said, “I’m talking to you; what are you looking around for?”
Realizing that he might be referring to her, Luo Qiao looked down and saw her shadow on the ground. “Oh no, I’ve been discovered,” she thought sheepishly, and came out trying to appease him, saying, “Um, Big Brother, I wasn’t intentionally listening around the corner. I just happened to be passing by, honestly.” She even lifted her belongings to prove she wasn’t lying.
Lu Yichen couldn’t be bothered to fuss over it and said, “It’s unsafe for a girl to be out alone late at night. Wherever you’re going, let me take you there.”
Luo Qiao hurriedly declined, “No need, no need, I’ll be right back, it’s still early.” Then she swiftly ran off.
She didn’t want to risk any misunderstandings that could lead to further gossip, especially not if Gao Taohua decided to return. Why invite trouble?
Lu Yichen was taken aback by her reaction; he shook his head at Luo Qiao’s retreating figure and returned to the yard.
Luo Qiao made her way to the brigade commander’s home and called out at the gate, “Auntie Gao, are you home?”
The household had just finished dinner. Qiao Lianlian greeted Luo Qiao with a smile, “Come in, what brings you here at this hour? Have you eaten?”
Luo Qiao answered with a smile, “I have, just came over after dinner.”
As she walked inside, she greeted the brigade commander, “Hello, Brigadier, sorry to disturb you during your meal.”
Seeing two children seated beside, she greeted warmly, “Hello there, kids.”
Luo Qiao also greeted the brigade commander’s son and daughter-in-law, who were at the table.
The brigade commander asked, “Is there something you need, Luo Qiao?”
Luo Qiao lifted the item in her hand, “Auntie Gao, please find a basin and fill it with water.”
Everyone turned their gaze towards the bag Luo Qiao was holding, sensing something moving inside.
Auntie Gao asked, “What’s that?”
Luo Qiao began dragging her towards the water vat, explaining, “It’s fish; I caught it in the pond. I brought one for you to try. You won’t be able to eat it today since it’s still alive, so keep it in water, and tomorrow it will be a nice treat for everyone.”
Upon hearing this, Auntie Gao stopped in her tracks, gripping Luo Qiao firmly, “That won’t do, my dear. You’ve worked hard to get some food, and I can’t accept it.”
Luo Qiao pulled Auntie Gao back, insisting, “Auntie, please don’t forget all the things I’ve borrowed from your house. If it wasn’t for the help from the brigade and you, I wouldn’t have known what to do.”
