After speaking, she looked up and asked, “Are you guys almost done with your stuff?”
Lu Yichen massaged his forehead, “Probably going to be busy for a few more days; I’ll take you there this afternoon.”
Luo Qiao shook her head, “No need, I have only one luggage bag. You go about your business; there’s no need to come over. The back and forth would be a waste of time. I understand your intentions, and that’s enough.”
Lu Yichen crouched down in front of Luo Qiao, “You must be careful when you’re outside, and if anything happens, don’t act rashly. Remember to give me a call; I’ll have someone deal with it for you later. Got it?”
Luo Qiao nodded, then added, “Alright, it’s not my first time going out. My fighting power is so high, and I know medicine. If someone with no eyes comes looking for trouble, it’s hard to say who’ll be taking advantage of whom.”
Luo Qiao checked the time, “I should go now, I still need to go home to get my luggage. You’re also starting to get busy, I can’t delay your work.”
Lu Yichen saw Luo Qiao out the front gate and watched her board the bus. Only then did he turn back toward the house.
He picked up some roast duck on his way home, where his grandmother, Zhou Guifang, was making dumplings. Luo Qiao walked in and asked, “Grandma, why are you making dumplings again?”
Zhou Guifang said, “Aren’t you taking the two o’clock train this afternoon? I prepared some food for you to take along. These have vegetable filling; if you can, get someone to heat them up for you, but they’re fine cold too.”
Luo Qiao washed her hands and joined the dumpling-making process, “Grandma, did Dad come by last night?”
Zhou Guifang answered, “He did, we’ve discussed almost everything and even made a list. There’s quite a lot of things to bring, including a few big items. Qiaoqiao, there really will be a car to deliver the goods, right?”
As she made dumplings, Luo Qiao nodded, “Yeah, if it’s the big items, let the factory deliver them. At worst, we can pay for the shipping.”
Zhou Guifang mentioned, “Your dad said that many people are buying refrigerators and TVs when they get married, but they’re too expensive for us. He’s thinking about just getting one of those and a bicycle.”
Luo Qiao responded, “Okay, I got it. You all just wait to receive the goods.”
After the meal, Luo Daoren handed Luo Qiao the list along with a bundle of cash, “Make sure to keep this money safe, especially on the train.”
With the dumplings, tea eggs, and vegetarian pies her grandmother had made, Luo Qiao stepped out, carrying a bag of camellia oil flour. The elderly couple walked her out to take the bus, only to see Lu Yichen waiting in his car.
Upon seeing them emerge, he quickly got out of the car, “Hello Grandpa, Grandma, I’ve come to pick up Qiaoqiao.”
Luo Daoren asked, “Why didn’t you come in out of the cold?”
Lu Yichen took Luo Qiao’s large luggage bag, “I had just parked and turned off the car when I saw you coming out.”
Luo Qiao inquired, “Weren’t you very busy? How come you’re here?”
Lu Yichen opened the back door of the car, placed the large luggage bag on the back seat, and then opened the passenger door, “Everybody hasn’t had a break in a long time, so I gave them half a day off. They’re going home to have a look around and freshen up. We regroup at six in the evening.”
Luo Qiao laughed, “Comrade Lu, you’re mixing business with pleasure.”
Lu Yichen didn’t speak, but the smile at the corner of his mouth was visible for everyone to see.
Luo Qiao turned to the old couple, “Grandpa, Grandma, go back home. I’ll be back once I finish my errands.”
Having said that, she got into the car, and Lu Yichen, after greeting, also went around to the driver’s side.
Luo Qiao extended her hand out the window to wave, and the car took off onto the main road. It wasn’t until they were out of sight that the old couple turned to head back.
Lu Yichen dropped Luo Qiao off at the station, taking out the snacks he had prepared from the trunk, and said with reluctance, “Please be careful, and make sure to call me if anything happens.”
He then handed her a piece of paper, “Keep this safe. It has the address and contact information of my comrades down south, just in case.”
