Reborn as a Useless Noble with my SSS-Class Innate Talent Chapter 246

The last of the monsters faded into mist, their snarls swallowed by the quiet hum of the living forest.

Kyle cleaned his blade with a flick of his wrist, mana dissipating around him like smoke. He looked over at Silvy, who was still catching her breath, fingers loosely gripping her now-fading mana bow.

"That's enough. Time to get back to the Elf's trail."

Kyle said, stepping beside her.

Silvy blinked at him.

"But… aren't you still gathering herbs? You looked like you were enjoying yourself."

"I was. But dragging you into unnecessary danger isn't part of the plan. I'd rather explore the forest alone next time."

Kyle crouched and pocketed a few loose stalks of skyroot near his feet.

Silvy felt the sting in those words more than she expected. She looked away, hiding the slight frown on her lips.

"Right… makes sense."

She didn't tell him the truth—that she didn't know how to get back to the Elf's trail.

Still, she nodded firmly. "It's this way," she said, forcing confidence into her tone.

Kyle raised a brow as she took a few brisk steps in a direction that, to him, clearly pulsed with distorted mana. She was walking straight toward a disguised monster nest.

He muttered and moved.

Before Silvy could step past the next root, Kyle's hand caught her wrist. She gasped, startled, but didn't resist.

"You were about to walk into something. Be careful."

She flushed, then nodded again.

He didn't let go immediately.

Instead, he pulsed his mana subtly, letting threads of it weave gently into the mist—thin, precise strands that laced through the fog like a spider's web.

Silvy's elven senses twitched at the sudden change in the air. She frowned slightly.

Her gaze scanned the path ahead.

She could see something now.

Faint… but real. Lines in the mist. Traces of mana she hadn't noticed before, almost hidden under the chaotic flow of the wild forest.

There. A shift in direction. A resonance that reminded her of the sacred trail.

"I see it. The trail—it's here!"

She whispered, eyes lighting up.

Kyle said nothing, letting his hand fall back to his side.

Silvy's steps grew more confident as she moved forward, this time leading them both with certainty.

The Elf Trail began to pulse again beneath their feet, as if accepting them once more.

Kyle followed silently, letting her take the lead now.

Silvy looked over her shoulder with a grin.

"See? You really shouldn't wander off without me. Who knows how lost you'd be without your elf guide?"

He gave her an amused look, lips quirking upward.

"I'll keep that in mind."

She puffed up with pride and returned to the front, clearly regaining her confidence.

Kyle didn't tell her that he had subtly woven his mana into the trail's path, clearing away the confusion and allowing her instincts to pick up the rest.

Let her have this win—it was useful to him if she believed in her own abilities.

This time, they didn't stray from the trail. The mist grew thinner, the mana calmer.

Birds began to chirp faintly again. The deeper dangers of the forest receded behind them.

Eventually, the path ended at a shimmering, semi-transparent barrier—a dome of pale golden light interlaced with elven runes.

It pulsed softly, alive with ancient enchantments that hummed beneath their skin.

Silvy stepped up to it and turned back to Kyle.

"This is the last stop before the village. Past this barrier is sacred land. Only those allowed by the forest and the Gods may pass."

Kyle studied the barrier, his eyes narrowing slightly.

"It watches over our territory. Even if I brought you this far, if it rejects you, the barrier won't open."

Kyle said nothing, but his eyes gleamed faintly as he stepped closer. The runes pulsed the moment he approached, reacting to his presence.

Silvy's breath hitched.

The barrier didn't resist.

Instead, it shimmered once and slowly began to part down the center.

"…That's never happened before. Not even for me."

She murmured, eyes wide.

Kyle tilted his head.

Or maybe it recognized the presence deep within his mana the power he had. It stirred ever so slightly now, pleased.

Silvy watched in silence, awe creeping across her features.

Kyle stepped through first, then turned to offer her his hand.

She stared for a moment, then smiled, slipping her fingers into his.

They passed through the veil of light together, the Elf Trail fading behind them. The forest had tested them both—some more than others—but now the true journey was about to begin.

Silvy paused just before the barrier, her expression turning serious. Her fingers tightened around Kyle's hand, and for once, she didn't look teasing or proud—just honest.

"Before we go in… you need to know something. Elves aren't the kind, gentle folk you've read about in stories. We're not peaceful forest spirits singing to deer under the moonlight."

Kyle raised an eyebrow but said nothing.

"They're cold. Merciless. Especially toward outsiders. If they see you as weak, they'll mock you. If they see you as strong, they'll test you. And if they think you don't belong, they'll make sure you feel it."

Kyle glanced past her toward the shimmering barrier. It still hummed gently, runes glowing in slow rhythm.

But as he narrowed his senses, he caught it—beneath the elegant shine, something festered.

It wasn't just the forest's natural decay. It was a twisting, bubbling mass of corruption, hidden behind the beauty like mold behind a painted wall.

Even without stepping in, he could feel it—the Elf Village was rotting.

"I won't be disappointed. If anything… I expected worse."

Kyle said flatly, eyes locked on the corruption that writhed just behind the barrier.

The barrier opened wider in response to their presence, and immediately Kyle felt it—something reaching.

A sick, invisible pressure rushed toward him like a flood, trying to wrap around him, to latch on and sink its roots into his mana.

Kyle's mana surged like a shield, sharp and commanding.

The corruption recoiled as if burned, unable to pierce the dense layers of refined energy that surrounded him.

Silvy gasped and clutched his arm, eyes widening.

"What is this feeling…?"

Even standing so close, she felt untouched—cleansed, even. The pressure that had haunted her whenever she passed through the barrier was… gone.

The moment her feet stepped into the Elf Village, she blinked and stared around in awe. Her usual tension didn't return.

Her thoughts weren't fogged. The constant pressure she'd learned to live with over the years simply wasn't there.

"This is…The first time I've ever been here and felt so… light."

She looked back at Kyle, stunned.

Kyle didn't answer at first. His gaze was locked ahead, scanning the beautiful treetop homes, the shimmering bridges of light between canopies—and the shadow crawling just beneath it all.

He could see how the corruption slithered through the roots, how it fed off the ancient mana structures that once protected the elves.

The mana inside him stirred faintly again. It did not speak, but he could feel its displeasure.

Something was wrong here.

Kyle kept his voice even.

Silvy nodded, still shaken, but somehow comforted by his calmness. As the barrier closed behind them, the Elf Village revealed itself fully.
