Chapter 52: Chapter 53: Why Are You So Nervous?
“It’s for the best that it is so, otherwise—” Yan Ze’s lips curled into an arc, his eyes narrowing into dangerous slits.
“Master Yan, the Old Madam insists that I am the lady of the marquis mansion and is determined to forcefully take me and the child back to the Marquis’s Mansion. She even threatens that if I do not agree, she will make it impossible for me to stay in this place.”
Shao He, sensing that Old Madam Chu seemed to harbor some fear towards the young man, quickly spoke up, knowing that the person before them was none other than the Minister of the Court of Judicial Review, Yan Ze, and immediately laid out the situation.
Just as Old Madam Chu was about to explain, Yan Ze promptly hinted, “Old Madam Chu had better think clearly before she speaks, the Lady of the Marquis of Pingnan has already been buried, and I even went to pay my respects.”
“Moreover, the Madam Marquis had an imperial edict upon her. If the affairs reported by Marquis Pingnan’s Mansion are false, that would amount to deceiving the emperor! You must be aware of the severity of deceiving the emperor, Old Madam. No need for me to spell it out, you surely understand it better than anyone.”
Yan Ze did not even give her a chance to speak, directly pointing out the gravity of the issue—the death of the lady of the marquis mansion was an unchangeable fact.
Old Madam Chu’s complexion turned unsightly in an instant, fully aware of the grave consequence of deceiving the emperor. If exploited by those with ulterior motives, at best it would lead to the destruction of the household, at worst, the extermination of nine generations!
Old Madam Chu’s lips quivered slightly, her gaze complex as she stared at the person before her.
Yan Ze’s words were not only a warning to the Old Madam but also to the Pingnan Marquis’s Mansion behind her!
Who was Yan Ze? If he truly wanted to seal Pingnan Marquis’s Mansion, the Marquis of Pingnan wouldn’t even have the chance to resist, and it would likely affect Chu Yu as well.
Old Madam Chu’s mind spun rapidly, eventually opting to compromise.
With a strained smile, she awkwardly tugged at the corner of her mouth, “It was my old eyes that mistook you for someone else. I heard that this young female doctor’s medical skills were exceptional and specially came for a consultation. I didn’t expect her to be too proud to treat me because of her reputation, which led to our argument.”
“In that case, how about we let this be a minor matter for the sake of my face?” said Yan Ze, effectively giving Old Madam Chu a generous amount of face and a way out.
Immediately smiling, Old Madam Chu said, “Since Young Master Yan has spoken, I won’t pursue the matter further.”
Suppressing the anger in her heart, Old Madam Chu couldn’t very well make a scene in front of Yan Ze.
“Thank you for your understanding, Old Madam Chu,” Yan Ze said politely, then proceeded to push the wheelchair towards the inner chamber.
Standing in place, Shao He furrowed her brows, lost in thought.
Pei Huaian glanced at her, his lips parting slightly, “What are you dawdling for? Come inside.”
Coming back to her senses, Shao He followed his steps into the room. Old Madam Chu, with a smile plastered on her face, watched as they disappeared before her eyes, then turned and left.
Following beside Yan Ze, Shao He couldn’t help but feel uneasy as she caught a glimpse of the sinister expression on Old Madam Chu’s face from the corner of her eye.
Noticing Shao He’s unease, Pei Huaian looked at him and asked, “What’s the matter?”
Shao He shook her head. With things as they were, all that could be done was to cope with events as they arose and confront the challenges when they came.
Once inside the back courtyard, Shao He bowed and said, “Thank you both for your timely rescue. If you have any needs in the future, I will do my utmost to help.”
Pei Huaian began to explain, “I was caught up with something, so I didn’t come for a month, and it seems my leg has gotten worse.”
Shao He felt his pulse and inspected his leg, saying in a grave tone, “The condition has indeed worsened, but thankfully it’s not too severe.”
As she spoke, Shao He began the acupuncture treatment.
Pei Huaian was very cooperative, and a certain understanding seemed to exist between them, one that required no words to know what the other wished to do.
Yan Ze’s eyes roamed curiously back and forth between the two, a hint of curiosity in his gaze.
Whether it was the relationship between the female doctor and Pei Huaian or her formidable medical skills, both piqued Yan Ze’s interest.
Seeing the acupuncture treatment conclude, Yan Ze couldn’t restrain his curiosity and asked, “Your medical skills are so impressive, miss; may I ask who taught you, and why you ended up in a medical hall?”
“I’d rather not say,” Pei Huaian answered before anyone else, rolling his eyes at him.
Yan Ze laughed with ill-intent, “I was just asking casually, why so nervous?”
