The cool evening breeze rustling through the leaves, Yue Xiaofang looked up at the dim sky.
The streetlights on either side of the road had somehow stopped working.
Walking alone on the road felt particularly eerie.
Anyone else might have been trembling with fear by now.
But ever since losing her child, Yue Xiaofang was no longer afraid of these things.
Instead, she hoped that one day she might see her again, even in another form.
The dark clouds in the sky quietly shifted, allowing the moonlight to pour down.
Yue Xiaofang suddenly caught sight of a figure approaching in her peripheral vision.
An inexplicable panic surged in her heart.
Yue Xiaofang instinctively ran forward, thankful she hadn’t worn high heels since she wasn’t doing business today.
The person behind her cursed and immediately gave chase.
They were indeed coming for her.
Yue Xiaofang clenched her teeth and ran with all her might, shouting at the top of her lungs.
"Help! Fire! Somebody help!"
In such situations, you mustn’t just shout for help; people have a natural tendency to avoid trouble and won’t intervene.
But shouting fire would attract more people; strength in numbers would deter the attacker.
Her voice echoed along the road.
But in the dead of night, it stirred no response.
The assailant had hesitated initially, but seeing no one around, he became even bolder, pursuing her relentlessly.
Yue Xiaofang ran so hard that the taste of blood filled her mouth.
But the person behind her was getting closer.
Even if Yue Xiaofang could momentarily shake him off using her familiarity with the terrain,
the physical strength difference between men and women was hard to bridge; the distance between them was closing.
This person couldn’t be an ordinary petty thief.
Otherwise, he would have been scared off by her loud shouts.
Yue Xiaofang threw her purse away.
As expected, the man didn’t even glance at it and continued running straight for her.
Yue Xiaofang managed to make a wry joke to herself even while desperately running.
At her age, it wasn’t likely they were after her looks.
Seeing that he would catch up to her at the next corner, Yue Xiaofang racked her brain for a solution.
The person behind her sneered and reached out a hand toward her shoulder.
At that moment, Yue Xiaofang collided with a man’s chest at the corner.
Yue Xiaofang’s nose hurt, as if she had hit a mountain.
Yet it felt particularly safe at this moment.
Yue Xiaofang’s throat was hoarse, and before she had a chance to plead for help, the man had already pushed her behind him.
"Hey, kid, stop playing hero and get lost."
The thug chasing Yue Xiaofang snarled, looking like trouble.
Yue Xiaofang felt both relieved and scared at the same time.
Worried that she might be causing trouble for this man.
In the darkness, she couldn’t see the man’s face clearly, only a rough outline from the side.
Yue Xiaofang had a strange sense of familiarity, but couldn’t figure out why.
"So you want to meddle, huh? Let me show you the consequences."
The man’s incoming punch was effortlessly dodged.
The man countered with a punch, landing squarely on the thug’s nose.
Bright red blood immediately flowed.
"Come on, let’s see what happens."
The man grunted heavily and kicked the thug hard, sending him sprawling to the ground.
The thug, though somewhat skilled, endured the pain and grabbed the man’s arm, trying to throw him down.
But his neck was caught by the man’s other arm.
It tightened fiercely!
A strong sensation of suffocation hit him suddenly.
The sound of handcuffs locking was particularly crisp, and he belatedly realized.
He had really encountered a tough opponent.
This man was actually a cop!
The officer handcuffed the thug’s hands behind his back before turning to the still-frightened Yue Xiaofang.
