Reborn As Mr. Coldwell's Wife Chapter 84

Ellen stood in the hallway, staring at the closed door in front of her. It had been a few days since Mason left, and according to what he had told her, he was supposed to return tomorrow. The thought of him being back soon filled her with a mix of anticipation and nervous energy. But tonight, something else gnawed at her—a temptation she had been resisting ever since her first day there.

Mason had always been clear: his room was off-limits. He never allowed her inside, not even for a moment. That strict boundary only served to fuel her curiosity. It was human nature, after all—tell someone not to do something, and it only made them want to do it more. Ellen was no exception.

She found herself standing in front of Mason’s door now, her hand hovering just inches from the door handle. Her heart raced, and she bit her lip as she contemplated her next move. Should she open it? Or should she just walk away, go to bed, and wake up tomorrow morning regretting that she had missed the chance to see what was inside?

Definitely the first option.

Her curiosity was too powerful to ignore. One little peek wouldn’t hurt, right? No one would know—no one but her, anyway. It wasn’t like she was going to do anything wrong. She just wanted to satisfy her curiosity, to see what Mason was hiding behind that door.

She hesitated for a moment, her mind still battling with the decision. But then, with a grin tugging at the corners of her mouth, she muttered to herself, "Just one little peek."

As if to give herself one last excuse, Ellen asked aloud, her voice slightly too loud in the empty hallway, "Mason, can I come in?"

Of course, no one answered. She wasn’t expecting anyone to. But the silence appeared to give her confidence, making her grin widen. "Silence means yes," she said playfully, her tone almost teasing, as if she were having a conversation with him. "So, that’s a yes."

With that, Ellen turned the handle slowly, the door giving way with a soft click. The anticipation made her heart pound even harder as she pushed the door open, just a crack at first, and then wider until she could slip inside.

The room was dark, the shadows thick and deep. She reached for the light switch, and with a quick flick, the room was filled with light.

Ellen’s eyes scanned the room eagerly, taking in every detail. It was surprisingly neat and organized, much like Mason himself. She took a few cautious steps into the room, her gaze lingering on the various objects scattered throughout. It felt strange, standing here in Mason’s private space, like she was crossing some invisible line. But it also felt thrilling in a way she hadn’t expected.

Among the neatly arranged items, a picture frame caught her attention. It stood out, not because of its design, but because of the image it held. The picture inside the frame became clearer with each step, and when she finally reached the table, she gently picked up the frame, her fingers brushing against the cool metal.

The photo showed Mason, looking much younger, standing beside a man around his age. Behind them were a middle-aged man and woman, their smiles bright and warm. Ellen’s breath caught in her throat as she realized what she was looking at—his family photo.

Mason was in the forefront of the picture, his arm slung casually around the shoulders of the man beside him. His smile was wide, genuine, so different from the serious, often guarded expression he wore today. His eyes, usually so intense, sparkled with a carefree happiness that Ellen had never seen before.

The man beside him had to be Ian. The resemblance was unmistakable, though Ian’s smile was more mischievous, his posture a bit more relaxed. The two of them looked like brothers who had shared countless laughs and secrets, the bond between them evident even in this still image.

Behind them, the older couple stood with a proud, almost contented air. The man’s arm was around the woman’s waist, and she leaned into him slightly, their smiles mirroring each other’s. Ellen could see where Mason had inherited his strong features—his sharp jawline from his father, his clear eyes from his mother.

Ellen found herself smiling softly as she studied the photo, her thumb unconsciously brushing over Mason’s face. He looked so happy, So free from the constant burden of responsibility that now weighs on him. Seeing him like this, so carefree, made her heart ache a little.

For a long moment, she simply stared at the photo, lost in thoughts of a Mason she had never known. Then the realization that she was holding something so personal, so private, brought a twinge of guilt to her chest. She felt like an intruder in a world that didn’t belong to her, peering into a past that Mason had never shared with her.

"This is private," she murmured to herself, her voice barely a whisper in the quiet room.

With a sigh, Ellen carefully placed the frame back on the table, ensuring it was in exactly the same spot she had found it. She had already seen too much.

Ellen turned away from the table, her eyes flicking to the door. She needed to get out of there, to put an end to this little adventure before she did something she couldn’t take back. She reached for the light switch, her fingers trembling slightly as she flicked it off. The room was plunged back into darkness, the shadows returning to their corners.

But just as her hand touched the door handle, Ellen paused. She looked back at the room. Something held her back, a lingering urge that refused to let her leave just yet.

Should she? Could she? It was a reckless idea, one that her rational mind was desperately trying to dismiss. Ellen’s heart raced as she turned back towards the bed. Her eyes had adjusted to the dark, and she could just make out the outline of the bed—large, inviting, and undeniably Mason’s. She hesitated, her breath coming in shallow, uneven bursts. Every logical part of her mind screamed at her to leave, to walk away and forget this foolish idea.

But another part, the part driven by curiosity and an inexplicable desire, urged her forward. Before she could talk herself out of it, Ellen found herself moving toward the bed. When she reached the edge of the bed, she stood there for a moment, staring down at the smooth, dark sheets.

"Just for tonight," she whispered to herself, her voice trembling slightly. "It won’t hurt, right?"
