“Little Huzi, let’s get on the train before we eat,” she said.
Grandpa Zhao knew that Little Huzi had seen him pack some food and thought there was food in his bag.
“Listen to your mom, we’ll get on the train first,” he said.
Over the past month, Grandpa Zhao had heard many gossips from the old neighbours. They had said things like: ‘She’ll take care of him while he can still move, but she won’t bother once he gets old’. Grandpa Zhao believed that Hanhan wouldn’t become the person they described.

“Once we arrive in Kyoto, you and Little Huzi should stay at Ahao’s base,” Grandpa Zhao suggested.
Every time he saw Hanhan and Ahao together, their initial intensity reminded him of newlyweds. It made him happy.
Meng Yunhan didn’t respond, just smiled.
She planned to visit the base, but without bringing Little Huzi along at first.
Firstly, she wasn’t comfortable leaving her dad alone at home.
Secondly, she didn’t know whether Ahao’s base had fans. They had sent their fan ration ticket back home. Worrying about the summer heat in Kyoto made her fear that Little Huzi might get heat-stroke.
However, realizing that she would be seeing Ahao in a few days brought a rush of excitement.
But immediate concerns hovered around surviving the scorching days on the train journey ahead.
“Hey, Zhao, with all these bags, you must be heading to Kyoto by train, right?” a voice asked.
“Yeah, heading to Kyoto,” came the reply.
This past month, Meng Yunhan had been busy. She was handpicking common medicinal herbs, mushrooms, black fungus, and wild fruits from the mountains. All these goodies were packed in their bulky bags.
Many people along the way greeted Grandpa Zhao.
As soon as they left, the old neighborhood became abuzz with gossip about Grandpa Zhao’s situation.
“I reckon Zhao has been doing a lot better recently, he’s even put on some weight,” one said.
“His adopted daughter’s doing a good job and his grandson is smart, he started walking at one,” another chimed in.
“He’s certainly bold,” added another.
Since it’s summer and the sky brightens early, Meng Yunhan and Grandpa Zhao started their journey at dawn. That’s how they ran into old neighbors. If they’d left a bit later, most of these people would’ve been off to work.
After enduring the hot journey for several days and nights, Little Huzi was no longer as excited as when he left the town.
As soon as they alighted from the train, they felt overcome by a sour-smelling stench.
At the rented house, they quickly took the keys from the landlord and after a brief tidy up, immediately bathed in cold water.
“Sir, Vice-Commander Yun, there is someone to see you outside,” suddenly a soldier ran up to inform Yun Hao. Normally, Yun Hao would have dismissed the soldier straight away, as Lu Jingyi previously tried to get his attention in a similar way.
“Vice-Commander Yun, she said she is your lover,” noticing Yun Hao’s lack of response, the soldier quickly clarified.
Had his wife really come?
Yun Hao immediately gave out some orders before rushing over to the guardroom.
He spotted a female figure in the guardroom who was seated with her back towards him. Recognizing her instantly, he realized it was his wife.
Just from a silhouette, he could tell whether this person was his wife.
“Yunhan…” was all he said, almost blurting out the word ‘wife’, but remembered there were others in the guardroom. He corrected himself quickly to call her by name.
As Meng Yunhan turned around, she saw Yun Hao and broke into a wide smile.
Yun Hao nodded at the people inside the room, casually picked up his wife’s bag from the floor, and took her hand. They walked out of the room together.
