Reborn in the Survival Adventure Game Chapter 6

The forest at dawn was unusually tranquil.

Caelen strolled gingerly, gripping his axe as if an anxious traveler griping a directory in a zombie film. His belly growled loudly enough to chase a squirrel from behind a bush.

"Yeah, yeah, I get it," he grumbled. "Food, food, I'll find some food."

He combed the ground for flint as Google Brain directed. After a solid twenty minutes of kicking rocks and stomping down sticks that creaked too much like bones, he saw a dark, dimmishly shiny piece half-hidden in rock near a small cliff.

"Flint!" he exclaimed, raising a fist like he struck gold.

Out came the pickaxe. A few firm whacks later:

[You have acquired: 3x Flint]

"Let's Goooo."

Now—food.

He looked at a group of bushes. Red berries. Yellow berries. Blue-ish berries. He recalled his search earlier:

Red = regret. Yellow = absolutely not. Blue = maybe don't die.

He took one blue berry and gave it a wary sniff. It didn't smell like poison or death.

"Here goes nothing."

He swallowed it.

Chewed. Waited.

No stomach cramps. No immediate regret. No death gurgle.

He breathed out. "Okay, edible. And. sort of tastes like wet socks, but edible!"

He scooped up a handful and was making his way back when the sound of wings brought him to a halt.

He turned around, axe in hand—only to behold a glowing bird, suspended in mid-air like some mythical screensaver. Its feathers glowed like rainbow oil in sunlight, and it chirped at him with what sounded far too much like sarcasm.

"Um. Hi?" said Caelen.

The bird blinked, canted its head, and chirped again—twice, sharply.

It settled on a branch, eyed him like "That's your weapon? Really?", flapped onto his shoulder like he was an old friend.

Caelen blinked.

You have met: Sparkfin – Curious Forest Familiar (Harmless)

Sparkfin has gotten interested in you. Maybe because you're bizarre.

Friendly, almost laughter-like chirps.

"You're magical," Caelen whispered. "And you picked me. Out of all of them. Either you're lost or have very low standards."

Sparkfin primped itself proudly.

"Well. guess I've got a sidekick now."

The walk home was easier with Sparkfin leading the way, periodically coming back with useful chirps or disapproving head tilts. At last, the crooked shape of Caelen's hut appeared.

"Home sweet. whatever that is."

He entered. Sparkfin darted inside and settled on the table like a tiny king.

The hut was unchanged. One table. One chair. One earthy floor. Still no bed. Still no door. But it was his.

He placed the flint and berries on the table, sat in the squeaky chair, and extended.

But then he saw the sky. Night was falling. The shadows were lengthening. The air chilled quickly.

"Oh crap—light! Fire! Right, survival!"

He took the flint, located some dry bark and twigs from previous, and set up a base using a rock.

Search (4/20): How to start fire with flint

[Strike flint against steel or hard rock near dry tinder. Takes patience. And wrist pain.]

He worked at it.

Tap. Scrape. Spark. No spark. Try again.

Sparkfin sat there observing, like a disappointed science teacher.

Scrape. Tap—spark!

A small ember had caught on the bark.

"YES!"

Caelen puffed softly. Smoke twisted. Then—fire.

[You have earned: Campfire (Basic). Warmth + Light gained.]

He leaned back, satisfied. Sparkfin flapped triumphantly.

The golden light danced through the hut's interior, making everything seem just a bit less bleak.

Caelen ate a few of the safe berries, tossing one to Sparkfin, who caught it in mid-air like a braggart.

He surveyed his small shelter.

"It's not much," he said, his voice softer, "but it's getting better."

Tomorrow, he'd attempt to construct a legitimate bed. Perhaps cook something edible. Strengthen the walls. Perhaps even put in a door so bugs ceased treating his hut as a shortcut.

Tonight, though? He had warmth, food, and companionship.

He settled back in his chair, grinning at Sparkfin, who was already asleep by the fire.

"Yeah. I can survive this."
