Adrian usually did not take all these shadow guards everywhere but he came to the Yu Mansion to spend a night.
And knowing Ji Yan, he would not come without preparations. Ella had made a wild guess and with Riri’s seamless cooperation, it hasn’t been off the mark.
Mr. Yu staggered back, clutching his chest.
"Get off me!" The man snarled.
Ella looked on at the scene but the slightest bit of warmth in her eyes, gradually dispersed.
The birds chirped as sunlight filtered through the stained glass, lighting up the hallways.
Ella’s head slipped off the cabinet when she heard the sound of approaching footsteps.
"Miss Yu, why are you sleeping here?" Bertha hurriedly rushed forward to help her.
Ella rubbed her eyes, looking at the closed door of the Master bedroom.
"Both Secretary Ji and Dr. Knight are inside, taking care of the Second Master," Bertha sighed, "Earlier, I thought you’d leave after a while but..."
"I am fine, Bertha," Ell struggled to rise to her feet, feeling the numbness that shot through her legs.
Bertha helped her up, "Shall I knock so you can check on the Second Master’s condition?"
"No..." Ella grabbed her hand.
Bertha looked at her. Seeing the haggard look on Ella’s face, she found herself tongue tied.
Ella released her arm, "He needs rest. I can’t disturb him."
"Then, why don’t you go back and freshen up in your room? Once the Second Master is awake, I will send someone to inform you..."
Ella glanced at the closed door, slowly shaking her head.
Thinking of how Adrian had been holding her till the moment he lost consciousness, she did not want to budge from the spot.
Helpless, Bertha stood with her for some tim before she left.
"Mother, what happened? Why do you look so sad?" Rin whispered as she pulled Bertha to a corner, "Miss Yu cares for the Second Master that she slept outside his room for the entire night. Isn’t that a good thing?"
Bertha sighed, "Before, their hearts were not the same. But now..." She sighed again.
"What about now, mother?"
"I just hope Second Master and Miss Yu pass all the trials and tribulations to be with each other."
Ella waited outside the Master Bedroom for two hours until she finally heard a sound.
The door opened and Ronan stepped out.
The moment their gazes met, Ronan narrowed his eyes.
Ella walked to him, "How is he now?" Adrian’s health condition was rather complex. At times, even the slightest cuts on his body wouldn’t heal easily.
And yesterday, he received such vicious wounds, not one but two.
On the way back to the Eve Mansion, Ella had laid him on her lap. But she did not dare to budge an inch on the entire journey even though her legs had gone numb.
The back of his hand was bleeding unstoppably and there was a huge stab wound on his hand. Ella had been scared, worried, she wanted to cry, she wanted to shake him awake.
But all she could do was to hold him in his arms firmly, while praying for him to be fine.
Since her rebirth, Ella had rarely prayed to God. She had believed that in this life, she would not fail to avenge herself for every grudge and every scheme.
Yet, last night, Ella had felt helpless.
Ronan did not answer her question immediately. After remaining quiet for a long time, he said, "I don’t understand, Ella. Why is it that, every time Ace is with you, he gets hurt?"
Ella’s fingers curled into a fist but she did not retort.
"I haven’t seen him so pathetic since our childhood, as much as I have since the year you entered his life. Be it in Westra City, or Vermilion City, wherever or whenever, you just find a way to harm him."
"Westra City?" Ella frowned, "What... about Westra City?"
Ji Yan happened to step out of the Master Bedroom at this moment. Hearing that, he slowly shook his head at Ronan.
"Oh, she doesn’t know?" Ronan looked at Ella coldly, "When you disappeared without informing anyone, he had a panic attack, thinking that you left him!"
By the time Ella entered the Master Bedroom, she barely had any strength left.
Ronan’s words reverberated in her mind again and again.
’He couldn’t breathe.’
’We grew up together and I have never seen Ace bothered by anything or anyone. He always knew he was born with responsibilities. He couldn’t afford to get attached to things or people and risk bringing harm upon himself or those he was attached to.’
’Yet, you came into his life out of nowhere. None of us understand why he would marry someone like you, Ella. But still, when we were introduced to you, we felt happy.’
’We thought there would finally be someone who fills Ace’s life with happiness. Maybe he had found his soulmate.’
’What did you do? Time and time again, you pushed him to the bring. You aggravated his health, you tried to poison him, you tried to harm his business... And now, it has come to this.’
’With how well-protected Ace is, do you think he would be lying here in this condition if not for you?’
Ella’s steps slowed and her eyes landed on the man who was sleeping on the bed.
His head was covered in bandages and his right hand was wrapped up too, till his elbow.
Adrian’s eyes were closed and his breathing was even. His fierce aura was nowhere to be felt as he laid there, like a harmless man.
Ronan’s words rang in her mind again: ’The drug inside him was potent enough to kill him. Any sane man would have given in to survive. But he stabbed himself, and inflicted more pain on his body just to pull through. The wound on his head was not shallow either.
The only reason he is alright today is because lately, his condition has been more or less stable. Had it been 2 months ago, he would probably...!’
Ronan did not finish his words but the implication in them could not have been clearer.
