Reincarnated with the Country System Chapter 268

The rain lashed against the palace windows in relentless sheets, turning Rafa's gleaming spires into a watercolor blur of neon and steel. Thunder growled in the distance—a fitting backdrop for the silent war being waged in the emperor's private study.

Alberto Bernard exhaled a slow stream of cigar smoke. Across the obsidian chessboard sat ISSD Chef Carl.

"Your move," Alberto said, tapping ash into a crystal tray.

Carl's fingers—gloved in thin black tactical mesh, more out of habit than necessity—hovered over his queen's knight. The piece clicked against marble as he executed a classic Marshall Attack.

Alberto's lips twitched. He'd expected this. With deliberate slowness, he slid his bishop to E3.

The chess pieces were antique—ivory and onyx replicas of Bernard Empire soldiers and Ostra's rebels.

"Enter," Alberto called without looking up.

Defense Minister Thomas stepped inside, his suit still damp at the shoulders.

"Apologies for interrupting, Chancellor," Thomas said, executing a quick bow of the head. "But we've lost contact with the Dungeon expeditionary force."

Carl's gaze flicked to the minister.

"Two hours, seventeen minutes since the last checkpoint," Thomas replied. "They'd just breached the sixth sublevel when comms went dark."

Alberto didn't react. He studied the chessboard as if it held the answers, fingers tracing the rim of his whiskey glass.

"Casualty report?" he asked finally.

"None confirmed. It's not a comms blackout—the quantum relays are still online. They're just... not responding."

A flash of lightning illuminated the study. In that stark white moment, the chess pieces cast long shadows like soldiers on a battlefield.

Carl moved his rook with careful precision.

Alberto examined the new threat. Beautiful play. He could take the rook with his queen, but that would leave his kingside exposed. Instead, he advanced a pawn—seemingly insignificant, but the beginning of a deeper strategy.

Thomas cleared his throat.

"Should we send reinforcements? Another strike team?"

Alberto didn't answer immediately.

Carl slid another piece—quietly threatening Alberto's flank.

"If Kain and his Exo Knights went silent, and the Holy Empire's forces with them, then whatever's down there isn't something we can overwhelm with numbers." Carl's voice was ice.

"You don't send men into a black hole and expect them to crawl back out."

"Then… what do we do?"

Alberto's hand paused mid-move, hovering over his queen. He looked up, his gaze sharp.

"We send the unfeeling."

"The robots," Carl said, finally taking one of Alberto's pawns.

"Precisely." Alberto motioned toward Elias, standing at the edge of the room.

"Deploy the Revenant-class scouts. Full sensory suite."

"And if they don't come back either?"

Alberto shifted another piece, trading position rather than gaining ground.

"Then we seal the Dungeon."

Alberto didn't look away from the board.

"Are either already dead," he said, cutting him off, "or beyond our reach. I won't waste more lives chasing ghosts."

The room grew heavy. Outside, thunder rumbled, closer this time.

"I'll give the order."

As he turned to leave, Carl moved his knight and stood slowly. His voice dropped low.

"My lord… if something took out Kain and the Holy Empire's finest, what the hell is down there?"

Alberto's hand paused over the king. His lips curled into something that wasn't quite a smile.

Rain sheeted down across the floodlights and scaffolding of the southern vestibule—the only sanctioned entry point into the Dungeon. Engineers worked with practiced urgency beneath retractable shielding canopies. The air hummed with electrical tension—not just from the storm, but from the breach itself.

A shimmering blue field rippled across the gateway: the last layer of passive containment. A dozen tech-priests stood behind monitoring arrays, cross-referencing anomaly data. Custodians in black armor stood watch, pulse rifles loaded but fingers off the triggers. No one spoke loudly here.

A hiss broke the silence as the cryo-cradle depressurized.

The carbon shell peeled open, its interior bathed in blue refrigeration mist.

And from it stepped the Revenant.

Designated REVENANT-09, it was over two meters tall and sculpted from a matte-black composite of memory alloy and kinetic mesh. Its humanoid form was deliberate—intimidating, not relatable. The head was a smooth, eyeless oval, a spiraling red band of light pulsing with cognitive activity. From its back, two multi-limbed drones detached, hovering with steady grace as they activated their scanning lasers.

A technician stepped forward under her hood, rain slicking down her coat.

"Designation?" she asked, unable to keep the tremor out of her voice.

The machine turned its head—not curiously, but with total mechanical attention.

"REVENANT-09. Sub-Void Protocols enabled. Cognition tethered to Blacknet AI Core. Fully compliant."

Another voice crackled through the intercom—Command, speaking from far above.

"Revenant Nine, your orders are simple. Find them. Record everything. Do not attempt engagement unless explicitly authorized."

REVENANT-09 tilted its head. A nod, but stripped of humanity.

A tech-priest, older than the rest, stepped forward in layered robes of silver-threaded polymer. He raised his hands in a series of gestures and whispered low rites in Cantus Ferrum.

"By blade and code," he intoned, brushing metallic fingers across the Revenant's plating, "you are sanctified. Let no madness claim your logic, no shadow dim your path."

It was a small act. Perhaps futile. But in a world of algorithms and steel, faith still lingered like smoke.

From beneath the vestibule, a platform extended—a narrow strip of synthmetal reaching toward the yawning maw of the breach.

REVENANT-09 stepped forward, its gait unnervingly fluid. Too precise. Too silent.

As it neared the threshold, the ambient temperature sensors spiked. A three-degree drop. Electromagnetic distortions curled along the edges of the gateway, visible to augmented optics as flickering, glitch-like noise.

"Beginning descent," it announced.

The two drones flared red. A full sensory suite engaged:

Thermal imaging: activated.

Quantum echo analysis: synchronized.

Anomaly mapping: scanning at 5Hz intervals.

Cognitohazard filtration: green status.

It passed the containment field with no resistance.

Inside the Dungeon, things changed.

Light died. Not just faded—died. The drone lamps flickered as if swallowed, not dimmed. Strange markings crawled across the surfaces—half-carved, half-burned.

Movement registered at the edge of detection—shadows that didn't obey geometry. Sound dampened unnaturally, as though the air itself refused to transmit it.

REVENANT-09 continued forward, every step logged, every data point streamed to the surface via Blacknet.
