Reinventing Magic: An Inventor's Tale Chapter 108

The wounded royal army surged toward Bryndis, moving at full speed. Dust billowed behind them as they hauled the remnants of war—supplies, siege weapons, anything salvaged from the devastation. Though their ranks bore the scars of battle, they still numbered in overwhelming force.

Bryndis had played its final hand, expending its trump card in the last engagement. Now, nothing remained to counter the advancing force.

Yet, despite their advantage, the shadow of uncertainty lingered over them. The attack had shaken their morale, leaving cracks in their resolve. Lucius Drayford knew this well, and he refused to let doubt fester among the troops.

We need to strike now that they’ve exhausted their trump card, he thought, his mind racing with strategies. If we allow them to regain power—if that monstrous flying construct becomes fully operational—it will be the end for us.

Upon reaching the outskirts of Bryndis’ domain, General Torvin raised his hand, signaling a halt.

"We make camp here," he commanded. "Rest now, for tomorrow, we strike Bryndis."

The healers rushed to tend to the wounded, murmuring quiet reassurances as they worked. Torvin saw the exhaustion in his men’s eyes—the weight of survival pressing heavily upon them.

When the fires were lit and provisions distributed, Lucius stepped forward, his stance unwavering. He knew what had to be done.

"There is no need to fear Bryndis," he declared, his voice carrying across the encampment like steel against stone. "They have already played their trump card! We still have the numbers, and victory is within our grasp. Fight with courage, for once this war is won, His Majesty will reward us all!"

A roar of approval erupted from the army, their spirits reignited. Though the lingering fears of what lay ahead could not be entirely erased, the promise of victory—and the rewards it would bring—burned in their hearts.

Morning arrived.

Torvin and Lucius stood at the forefront of Bryndis Fortress, the royal army—156,000 strong—assembled behind them. Siege weapons lined the field, their towering frames aimed at the fortress walls.

Lucius clicked his tongue as he surveyed the forces.

"This is the best we can muster," he thought. But it should be enough. I can’t afford to lose this war."

Bryndis loomed before them, defiant and waiting. What was meant to be an easy war had become a battle far more arduous than anyone had anticipated.

Lucius tightened his grip on his blade. Whatever happened next, he would see this war through to the end.

Interlude: A Past Forged in Battle

Before Lucius Drayford had risen to stand at the king’s side, he had been nothing—just a noble from a fallen house, his lineage reduced to ashes by the relentless tide of war. His family was lost to bloodshed, leaving only him and his sister, Elizabeth, to navigate the ruins of their former life.

Fate, however, had other plans.

House Drayford, a loyal vassal to ’Queen Amariel Vaeloria’, took them in. But their kindness was not without purpose—they had seen something in Lucius, something rare. He was sharp, quick to learn, and possessed an instinct for strategy far beyond his years.

The queen herself noticed his talents early. Instead of letting him climb the ranks through conventional means, she ensured his training was nothing short of elite.

Lucius entered the ’Knight Military Academy’ under her watchful gaze, given access to the best instructors, the sharpest minds, and the most grueling trials. His education was not just in swordplay and battle tactics, but in diplomacy, deception, and leadership. He absorbed every lesson, growing into the weapon she intended him to be.

But there was one condition he refused to accept—his sister.

House Drayford had only intended to adopt ’him’. They saw no value in taking Elizabeth, believing her to be irrelevant to Lucius’s future. But Lucius had always been unwavering. He refused to accept the offer unless Elizabeth was brought in as well. He would not abandon her, no matter how grand the opportunity.

His defiance surprised them. ’It impressed the second queen.’

His demand was granted, and both siblings were taken in. Elizabeth became part of House Drayford alongside him, but Lucius’s path was already carved in stone. Under ’Queen Amariel’s’ guidance, he would rise faster than any knight before him.

In ’ten years’, he became one of the kingdom’s most formidable strategists. In fifteen, he was given command. By his early thirties, he stood where no ordinary noble ever could— as the king’s War Councilor, the architect of war.

The battlefield had forged him. The queen had sharpened him. But his own will had defined him.

And now, as war loomed over Bryndis, Lucius knew that every lesson, every sacrifice, and every battle had led him to this moment.

He would not fail. Not now. Not ever.

The Arcanum Forge Control Room

Kael Bryndis stood in the heart of the Arcanum Forge’s control chamber, surrounded by glowing holographic displays that painted the room in shifting hues of blue and gold. The air hummed with latent energy, the scent of ozone and warm metal thick in the enclosed space.

Before him, a massive projection screen flickered to life, displaying a panoramic view of the battlefield outside Bryndis’ walls. The royal army—156,000 strong—was assembling, their siege weapons being positioned with methodical precision.

A satisfied smirk tugged at Kael’s lips.

"This really comes in handy."

After the Skyward Sentinels’ assault on the royal camp, Kael had combed through Nexus’s vast archives, searching for any advantage that could be leveraged against the enemy. That was when he found it—an ancient blueprint for an observation artifact, a device that functioned much like the CCTV cameras from his past life.

The design was elegant in its simplicity:

Spirit Crystal Core – Capable of storing vast amounts of visual data with perfect clarity.

Red Mana Crystal Power Source – Providing continuous energy for uninterrupted operation.

Mythril Casing– Ensuring durability against both physical and magical interference.

The moment he saw it, Kael ordered immediate production. The Arcanum Forge, with its near-limitless manufacturing capabilities, had crafted dozens within hours. Now, these devices were discreetly embedded throughout Bryndis’ defenses, their feeds all channeling back to this central hub.

Kael’s fingers danced across the Arc Nexus interface, zooming in on key areas of the enemy formation.

"Nexus, enhance sector seven."

The display responded instantly, magnifying a cluster of royal battlemages preparing what appeared to be siege-breaking spells. Their movements were crisp, their incantations visible as faint ripples in the mana field.

Kael’s eyes narrowed.

"Earth-shaping magic. They’re planning to destabilize the walls."

Alice was beside him, her silver-gray hair catching the holographic light.

"Master, the Sentinels are primed for engagement."

Kael didn’t take his eyes off the screen. "No, I want to use this opportunity to train our men."

Astra stood motionless nearby, his Spirit Crystal pulsing faintly as he interfaced with Bryndis’ defense network. "Enemy commander sighted. Grid twelve."

The display shifted, focusing on Lucius as he moved among the royal troops, his sharp gaze scanning Bryndis’ walls. Even through the projection, Kael could see the calculating intelligence behind those eyes—a strategist assessing his opponent’s weaknesses.

Kael chuckled.

"He probably thinks we’re spent. That the Sentinels were our only trick."

Alice tilted her head. "Shall we correct his assumption?"

Kael flexed the Arc Nexus, feeling the nanites hum in anticipation.

"Not yet. Let them invest everything into this assault." His smirk turned predatory. "Then we’ll show them what Bryndis is truly capable of."

---

Outside, the royal army finalized their formations. Torvin stood at the forefront, Ragnarok’s Maw resting against his shoulder, its obsidian blade vibrating with barely restrained power.

Lucius approached, his voice low. "Something’s off. Their walls are too quiet.

Torvin grunted. "They’re hiding. Doesn’t change anything."

Lucius’ jaw tightened. Twelve-year-old memories flashed—his father’s army charging into a similar silence, only to be annihilated by hidden ballistae.

"History doesn’t repeat," he told himself. "But it often rhymes."

He turned to the signal officer. "Begin the assault."

Horns blared. Siege engines creaked as they unleashed their payloads.

And Bryndis’ walls moved.

Inside the control room, Kael watched as the first wave of projectiles arced toward the city.

"Nexus," he said calmly. "Activate Siege Protocols."

The words hung in the air for a fraction of a second—

Then the world outside erupted in light.
