Reinventing Magic: An Inventor's Tale Chapter 40

As the Aetherwing Skiff vanished into the distant horizon, Victor exhaled sharply, turning to Keira and Alice. His expression shifted from solemn resolve to immediate action. The cool night breeze carried the scent of damp earth and iron—a silent prelude to a battle they didn’t realize was imminent.

"Alright, let’s make sure everything is in order," Victor commanded, his tone crisp and authoritative.

Keira, her sharp brown eyes gleaming with determination, nodded. "I’ll check the defensive wards and reinforce our magical barriers. We can’t afford any weak points." Her voice was a knife’s edge, cutting through the thickening tension.

Victor gave a firm nod, his jaw set. "I’m counting on you, Keira. We need to always be ready."

Alice, with her serene gray eyes, stood quietly by, her presence both comforting and formidable. Her voice, calm and devoid of emotion, cut through the tense atmosphere. "I will assist in fortifying the defenses. My capabilities include both physical and magical reinforcement."

Victor glanced at her, momentarily struck by her otherworldly beauty, before snapping back to the task at hand. "Thank you, Alice. Your help is invaluable."

The Valtieri domain buzzed with frenetic energy as its inhabitants fortified their defenses. Later that night, atop the fortified walls of Valtieri’s stronghold, Victor stood, his sharp eyes piercing the moonlit horizon. The night was eerily quiet, save for the occasional howl of the wind that whispered of impending danger. Alice stood beside him, her posture poised and unreadable, an enigmatic figure against the starlit sky.

Despite her silent presence, Victor found himself glancing at her more often than he cared to admit. Her silver-gray hair shimmered under the pale light, and her eyes, like polished steel, reflected the world around her with a calculating intelligence.

He cleared his throat, attempting to focus on the task at hand. "Alice, I haven’t had the chance to ask before. What exactly are you capable of?"

Alice turned to him, her movements fluid yet mechanical in their precision. "My combat capabilities include enhanced strength, resilience, and advanced magical proficiency. My core stores a significant amount of mana, allowing for extended engagements. Additionally, I possess pre-programmed spell sequences for strategic deployment."

Victor exhaled, impressed. "I see. You’re not just beautiful—you’re powerful as well."

Alice blinked at him, her expression neutral. "Is that an observation relevant to our mission?"

Victor chuckled, shaking his head. "No, just something I couldn’t help but notice."

His mind drifted back to the first time his young lord had introduced Alice to the knights. Every single one of them, himself included, had been captivated by her ethereal beauty. Kael, however, had kept her true nature a secret. The implications of revealing that she was a half golem were too dangerous. The mere existence of an autonomous, human-like golem was unheard of and would likely incite fear and hostility.

His lips curled into a small smile as he recalled the moment he had once asked Kael for permission to court Alice. Kael’s hesitation had been puzzling at first, but when he revealed her true nature, Victor had been stunned. Still, the knowledge did not deter him. If anything, it made Alice even more fascinating.

If only she were an ordinary human, Victor thought.

The moonlight cast a soft glow over the two, and Victor could not help but be drawn to the way Alice’s eyes seemed to reflect the night sky. He had admired her from afar for so long, but being beside her now, with the imminent threat looming, made his feelings even more intense.

Alice noticed Victor’s lingering gaze and tilted her head slightly. "Commander, is there something wrong?"

Victor hesitated for a moment, then sighed. "No, it’s nothing. There is nothing wrong."

In his mind, he couldn’t deny that he admired her. Not just for her strength and abilities, but for who she was. Even if she was not human.

Meanwhile, in Count Gregor’s domain, the grand hall buzzed with a sinister energy as the war council convened. The room was filled with Gregor’s vassal lords and closest allies, their faces lit by the flickering glow of torches. At the head of the long table, Count Gregor stood, his dark eyes burning with barely restrained fury.

"My friends, today we gather under dire circumstances," Gregor began, his voice heavy with feigned grief. "Our lands have been attacked, our people slaughtered... and the culprit is none other than the Valtieri House!"

A murmur spread through the gathered lords, their expressions shifting from shock to seething anger. The Count of Gregor continued, raising a bloodied piece of armor—bearing the unmistakable insignia of House Valtieri.

"We have undeniable evidence that the Valtieri House is responsible for this atrocity!" Gregor declared, his voice rising in intensity. "They think they can invade our lands and go unpunished? I say we remind them that we are not so easily trampled upon!"

One of his vassal lords, Baron Helmut, stood abruptly, his face twisted with rage. "This is an act of war! We must retaliate immediately!"

"Yes! We cannot let this insult stand!" another lord echoed, pounding his fist on the table.

Gregor raised a hand, silencing the room with a gesture. "Then we are in agreement." His lips curled into a wicked smile. "Tiberius!"

A tall, heavily armored knight stepped forward and knelt before Gregor. "My lord."

"Gather the men. Thirty thousand strong," Gregor ordered, his voice cold and merciless. "Tomorrow, we will march on the Valtieri domain."

Tiberius bowed deeply. "It will be done, my lord."

As the lords roared in agreement, Gregor clenched his fists, his mind ablaze with thoughts of triumph. Soon, the Valtieri domain would be nothing more than a footnote in history, and his name would be the one whispered in awe and fear throughout the land.

The war will now begin.

One week later, back in the Valtieri stronghold, Keira lay in her chambers, her thoughts drifting to Kael. She wished she could have accompanied him to the capital, but she knew her place was here, defending their home. The Veilbreaker staff lay beside her, its presence a comforting reminder of her newfound power.

Meanwhile, Victor and Alice stood atop the wall, the night air cool and crisp. Victor couldn’t help but steal glances at Alice, his heart racing. He knew he should focus on their defenses, but her beauty was a dangerous distraction.

A sudden movement in the distance caught Victor’s attention. The sound of hurried footsteps echoed through the stone corridors below, followed by the frantic shouts of a scout. Victor stiffened, instincts kicking in. He turned to the gatehouse and called down, "Open the gate! Let him through!"

The scout staggered into the courtyard, breathless and wide-eyed. "Commander Victor! An army—Count Gregor’s forces—thirty thousand strong, marching toward us with siege weapons!"

Victor’s jaw tightened. They had anticipated Count Gregor would move, but not this swiftly. His grip on his twin sword hilts tightened as he turned to Alice. "Sound the alarm. We have a battle to prepare for."

Alice gave a small nod. "Understood. Activating defense protocols."

Within moments, the entire stronghold was ablaze with activity. Bells rang through the night, summoning soldiers to their posts. The enchantments on the ballistae flickered to life, humming with stored magical energy. Victor moved quickly through the ranks, issuing commands with a commanding presence that left no room for doubt.

Keira, roused from her rest, appeared at his side, still fastening the clasp of her cloak. Her expression was fierce, her Veilbreaker staff crackling with latent power. "What’s happening?"

Victor shot her a grim look. "Gregor’s army is almost upon us. It’s time."

Keira clenched her fists. "Damn him! If only the young master were here—"

"He isn’t," Victor interrupted. "But he trusted us to hold the line. And that’s exactly what we’re going to do."

Keira exhaled sharply, her frustration evident, but she nodded. "Then let’s make them regret coming here."

Victor turned back toward the gates, his expression hardened with determination. War had come to the Valtieri domain. And by his young lord’s name, he would make sure they survived it.

Victor stood on the ramparts, watching as the first torches of Count Gregor’s approaching army flickered in the distance. His fingers flexed around his sword hilt. Alice stood beside him, silent but alert, her eyes gleaming as she analyzed their enemy’s formation.

"This won’t be easy," Victor muttered. "But we will hold."

Alice turned her head slightly toward him. "Acknowledged. Defensive strategy analysis commencing."

Victor smirked, feeling a surge of determination. "Good. Let’s show them the strength of the Valtieri house."

As the first war horns sounded across the battlefield, the battle for Valtieri had begun.

---

Just beyond the walls, hidden in the cover of darkness, a hooded figure observed the looming battle with keen interest. A soft chuckle escaped their lips as they whispered to themselves, "Ah, the perfect stage for chaos. Let’s see which side is worthy of survival."

With a flick of their fingers, a series of glowing runes ignited in the air before vanishing just as quickly. The tide of battle was about to shift—but in whose favor, only time would tell.
