Sophie had been driven mad to blurt out all those pent-up words, but as soon as she had said them, she regretted it.
She knew well that in her dad’s heart, her mom was more important than she was; her mother was his bright moonlight. So, her mother was right, only she could make her life better.
How stupid she had been. How could she have upset her mother at a time ?
Thinking this, she took a deep breath, choked back all her unwillingness, and looked at Melody Baker’s reddened eyes with a touch of pity in her heart.
"Alright, Mom, I know I was wrong. I got scared by what you just said and spoke without thinking. You’re my own mom, how could I look down on you?"
Her voice was much softer now as she took Melody Baker’s arm and gently comforted.
After all, Sophie was her own daughter. Melody Baker might have been angered by her words, but she didn’t really hold a grudge, especially not after what the two had just discussed. Now, she was somewhat scared too.
Wiping away the tears at her eye corners with a tissue, Melody Baker clutched Sophie’s arm with a fearful look, her voice trembling, "Your Uncle Forest was very discreet this time. Do you think Adam Jones could really find out?"
The space card was unregistered. Once you hung up the phone and discarded the card, there was no way to trace the source. Could Adam Jones really have such godlike power to trace it back to them?
But Sophie wasn’t as naive as Melody Baker. She hadn’t seen Adam’s tricks, didn’t know to what extent this man’s reach could extend to heaven, but she knew she absolutely couldn’t underestimate Adam Jones.
If Adam Jones decided to investigate thoroughly, could people like them, with no background and no connections, stop him?
Besides, the way this was handled wasn’t smart. How could Adam Jones possibly not find out?
Seeing Sophie’s silence, Melody Baker grew even more panicked. "Should... should we contact Uncle Forest? Maybe he could smooth things over..."
Sophie frowned and interrupted Melody Baker impatiently.
"You want to involve Uncle Forest in such a trivial matter? Are you eager to let him be targeted by Adam Jones? If Adam Jones finds out we’re connected to Uncle Forest, are you not afraid he’ll dig up the past?"
Reminded by Sophie, Melody Baker quickly abandoned that idea.
"But... but... what do we do now?"
"There’s no choice now, sacrifice the car to save the chariot."
"Sacrifice... sacrifice the car to save the chariot? What does that mean?"
"You and Uncle Forest stirred up this trouble. In any case, find a way to keep it from being traced back to me."
As she spoke, Sophie paused, seeing the troubled expression on Melody Baker’s face. She then continued with emphasis, "Mom, don’t you want me to marry into the Jones Family? If Adam Jones traces this to us, what chance will I have? If he doesn’t ruin me, that will already be gracious of him."
A hesitation appeared on Melody Baker’s face.
"Don’t worry. The people were contacted by Uncle Forest. Call him right now and tell him if Adam Jones finds out, he should take the blame alone and not drag us down with him. As long as we’re safe, isn’t that enough to protect him?"
