As the competition went on, Max and Lara found their ways and got their place on the leaderboard, although Max was tied with Heitor and one other competitor.
Everyone knew that there would be dangerous opponents in this tournament, but they didn't expect it to be so difficult to reach the final. The individual archery tournament was probably the longest and most grueling, but it was also clear that the skills of some stood out more than others, especially as the challenges intensified, so the rivalry between them grew, pushing them to outdo each other more and more.
For this reason, when New York Fencing Department Captain Lara Cavalcanti put in a consistent performance in the third challenge and managed to hit four of the five targets, the whole air in the room seemed to change, especially for the audience, because Max, who had excelled in the first two challenges, hit only one target, while someone who didn't stand out hit four.
Lara changed everything for the other remaining contestants, put the energy of the place in their favor and when she returned to her seat, she looked at Andrew, her flatmate and said:
"Go and write your name where everyone can see it, show your mother what you're capable of."
Her words floated like a challenge and a warning, foreshadowing an invitation to greatness, a call to prove that limits are only starting points for the audacious.
Andrew, who had practiced little archery throughout the rest of his life, now had the opportunity to use this new passion to prove his worth to himself.
Everyone watched Andrew approach the shooting line, his eyes downcast, staring at his feet. He could feel the mixture of emotions in his chest, the anxiety, the anticipation of the performance and the deep desire to see his effort rewarded.
Andrew gripped the bowstring tightly, pulled his first arrow from the quiver and placed it on the string. Finally, he raised his head and took a moment to scan his field of vision with his eyes, looking for a familiar face, at which point a shout echoed through the audience, causing everyone to turn around in shock. Andrew followed everyone's gaze and saw something that left him speechless.
There was Andrew's father, standing in the stands, shouting and applauding enthusiastically. Next to him, Andrew's older brother, who was normally very reserved, was also vibrating with energy. The two of them were cheering for Andrew in such an excited way that it was making the others laugh and in their hands they held a sign, the glaring evidence of their support, which read:
"You make us proud, Andrew!"
Andrew's eyes lit up when he heard the shouts and saw his loved ones cheering him on. It was as if a wave of positive energy enveloped him, propelling him forward with renewed strength, but just when he wanted to flash a determined smile, his vision blurred with the tears that filled his eyes.
Andrew was feeling a mixture of emotions flood his being as he watched his family's heartfelt support. He had never expected to see them there, supporting him so fervently, as his mother had strongly repudiated his decision to go to the Special Program instead of a renowned college to take over her company in the future.
That moment became a milestone in his life, a turning point where he realized that he was not alone in his journey.
Andrew raised his bow, determination burning in his eyes as he took aim at the first target in the row.
The pressure was intense, but he felt the support of his family as a comforting warmth, as if they were there with him on the firing line. Andrew's breathing was calm and controlled, his hands steady as he pulled the bowstring. The world around him seemed to diminish, focusing only on the target in front of him. The crowd, the competitors, the organizers, everything faded into that moment of perfect concentration.
Lara, watching from the sidelines, smiled, knowing that this sudden change in Andrew's posture was no accident. She knew he wasn't an expert archer like some of the other competitors, but there was something about him at that moment, a mixture of determination and emotion, that made him a formidable opponent, mainly because of his talent for aiming.
Max, for his part, felt the tension in the air and a chill. Why? Even he couldn't say, after all Andrew was no threat, he hadn't shown great technique, speed or any other determining factor, but for some reason Andrew seemed different now.
A small flame of competitiveness ignited inside him. He didn't want to be outdone by anyone, but if Andrew managed to hit more than one arrow, Max and Heitor would be in big trouble, because then there would be a three-way tie for the three spots.
With a concentrated sigh, Andrew prepared to release the first arrow and while everyone was holding their breath, he stepped back and took the arrow out of the bow.
Everyone looked at Andrew in confusion, trying to understand what was going on, and one of the organizers approached the young man.
Andrew seemed to exchange a few words with the organizer, who nodded and went backstage.
Mumbles began to proliferate throughout the arena and, after just a few seconds, the organizer returned, but with something in his hand, a microphone. Andrew put the plugged-in microphone to his ear, giving him the mobility to use his hands. Then he looked out at the crowd, feeling a mixture of nervousness and determination, but also feeling the courage flowing through his words as he began to speak.
"I want to thank you all for the incredible support you've given to all the competitors so far. It's an honor to be here and to compete with the best. But before I continue, I'd like to share something with you. When I was a kid, my biggest dream was to be a teacher. I loved the idea of helping others to learn. However, over time, I put that dream aside for various reasons."
The crowd was now silent, all eyes fixed on Andrew as he spoke passionately.
"But today, in front of all of you, I realized that it's not too late to follow that dream. No matter how many arrows I hit or mistakes I make, what really matters is what I have to offer as a person. That's why I think that, if I manage to overcome this challenge, I not only want to win, but I also want to share my journey and teach you the technique you need to overcome it, thus showing you all in words that archery is not a monster and can be as easy as any other."
Andrew's words resounded in the arena, and a wave of applause and support washed over the place. His father and brother looked on with obvious pride.
