The soft chime of the main door barely stirred the air, but the shift in the atmosphere was instant.

Heads turned. Conversations stilled mid-sentence. Even the faint hum of the curling iron on the far table seemed to fade into the background.

He was tall, broad-shouldered, the dark lines of his suit tailored to perfection, the faint gleam of his cufflinks catching a beam of light from the window.

But it wasn’t his clothing that made the salon staff falter—it was the weight of his presence. Calm. Controlled. A quiet command that drew every pair of eyes without asking.

Julie, standing midway between the changing room and the main salon floor, the sapphire gown spilling from her waist in shimmering folds that caught and fractured the afternoon light. The intricate beadwork along the bodice glittered with each small shift of her breath.

Her steps faltered under the force of his gaze.

Roman didn’t move at first. He simply let his eyes trail from the gentle curve of her shoulders down the length of the gown, slow and deliberate, as though he was committing every detail to memory.

The air between them felt charged, almost tangible.

Finally, he spoke—her name, nothing more, but it rolled from his tongue like something rare.

She drew in a breath before replying, her voice soft, steady, and threaded with a quiet warmth.

He let his gaze sweep over her once more before returning to her eyes. His voice was low, but it carried easily in the silence.

"You’re... breathtaking."

The word landed in her chest like a held note, the slight pause after it making it feel all the more deliberate.

Julie’s lips curved in a small, shy smile. "Lisa thinks you might forget how to breathe," she murmured.

The faintest smirk ghosted over his mouth. "She underestimates you," he said. "I already have."

Her cheeks warmed, lashes lowering briefly before she looked back at him.

Roman stepped forward, closing the space between them until his presence wrapped around her like a second skin.

He didn’t touch her, but the air seemed to bend toward him all the same.

"If I take you with me now," he murmured, his voice pitched just for her, "I’ll consider this day perfect."

Julie tilted her head slightly, her smile a mixture of curiosity and affection. "Now?"

"Yes." He extended a hand, palm open and sure. "Come."

Before she could even lift her hand to his, another voice cut smoothly across the moment.

Both of them turned their heads toward Lisa.

She was sitting in her chair like a queen holding court, one ankle crossed over the other, her hands resting elegantly on the armrests.

There was humor in her eyes, yes, but also a glint of firm resolve.

Roman’s brow lifted slightly. "No?"

Lisa rose gracefully, her movements unhurried, deliberate. "Julie is not leaving this room until we’ve taken proper pictures.

This gown—" she gestured with one perfectly manicured hand toward Julie "—is a masterpiece, and masterpieces deserve to be captured.

If you walk out that door with her now, you’ll rob me of the pleasure of seeing this artistry preserved."

Roman regarded her with that quiet, unreadable look of his. "I don’t think she needs the pictures to be remembered."

"Of course she doesn’t," Lisa countered easily, her tone warm but edged with determination.

"But I do. And so will the family archives. And perhaps one day, the children you’re so impatient to have will want to see exactly how their mother looked in the gown that made their father act like a lovesick schoolboy."

Julie’s eyes widened slightly at the last remark, a faint blush creeping into her cheeks, but Lisa’s mischievous smile kept the moment light.

Roman’s gaze narrowed slightly, though there was no real irritation—just the hint of a private battle. "Ten minutes," he said.

"Thirty," Lisa replied instantly, the corners of her lips curving.

Lisa’s answering smile was one of quiet victory. "Done. Julie, my dear, come stand here by the window. The light is perfect."

Julie hesitated only a fraction before moving toward Lisa’s chosen spot, the beadwork on the sapphire gown catching each shift of sunlight streaming through the tall panes.

One of the salon girls hurried to adjust the fall of the skirt while another positioned a chair to the side. Lisa, clearly in her element, directed them with a sharp but not unkind efficiency.

"Lift your chin just a little—yes, there. Good. Now, turn your body toward the light but keep your eyes on me," Lisa instructed, her voice both commanding and encouraging.

Roman stayed where he was at first, hands in his pockets, watching.

His gaze was fixed on Julie, his expression unreadable to anyone else, but Julie could feel it—warm, steady, a little too intense to ignore.

The first click of the camera—one of the salon girls had produced a sleek, professional model from a leather case—echoed softly in the room.

Lisa circled, assessing angles like a painter searching for the perfect brushstroke. "Hold the skirt slightly with your left hand. Yes—exactly. Now smile, but not too much. There... lovely."

Roman finally moved closer, stopping just at the edge of the window light.

His presence didn’t distract Lisa, but it drew Julie’s attention in small, unavoidable glances.

When Lisa stepped back to review the shots, Roman took the moment to lean slightly toward Julie. "You look more beautiful than the dress," he said under his breath.

Julie’s lips curved, but she kept her eyes on Lisa to avoid flustering the shoot. "Flattery won’t make her finish faster," she murmured back.

Roman’s faint chuckle was enough to make Lisa glance over sharply. "No talking," she scolded lightly. "You’ll ruin the poise."

Julie bit back a laugh and straightened again, letting Lisa guide her into the next pose.

The minutes stretched—not unpleasantly—but with a slow, deliberate rhythm.

Julie posed by the window, then seated gracefully on the edge of the chair, then standing with her hands loosely clasped at her waist.

Each time, Lisa adjusted the tilt of her chin, the angle of her shoulders, the fall of the gown’s train.

Roman remained a constant presence just a step away, his gaze following her like the shadow of something unspoken.

The salon girls seemed quietly fascinated, sneaking glances at him between shots—his focus never wavering from Julie.

"Alright," Lisa said at last, lowering the camera with a satisfied little hum. "One final picture. Julie, stand just there—yes, with the roses in the background. Roman, if you want, you may stand beside her for this one."

Roman’s brows lifted a fraction, but he stepped into the frame without hesitation.

Julie’s breath caught at his nearness. Even without touching her, his presence felt like a hand at the small of her back, steadying and claiming all at once.

Lisa smiled to herself as she took the picture. The click of the shutter felt like a seal on the moment.

And then, just as suddenly as the session had begun, Lisa lowered the camera. "Perfect. We’re finished."

The tension in the air loosened fractionally, though the warmth between Julie and Roman remained—silent, steady, and impossible to ignore.

Lisa looked down at the camera’s screen, her eyes lighting up with satisfaction. "These will be beautiful. Worth every second I had to fight for."

Roman’s mouth curved faintly, his gaze still fixed on Julie. "I’ll admit... you were right."

Lisa gave him a knowing smile. "I usually am."

Julie, still standing in the last spill of afternoon light, let out a quiet breath she hadn’t realized she’d been holding.

In the gentle hush that followed, the only sound was the faint rustle of the gown as she shifted—its sapphire shimmer catching one last glint of gold from the setting sun.
