Shadow Monarch's Requiem Chapter 26

Chapter 26 - The Phantom’s Descent

The city had changed. Ever since Jin-Ho Kang wiped out the Red Fang Syndicate and absorbed their forces into his shadow army, the criminal underworld had been in turmoil. Fear ruled the streets, and whispers of an unstoppable force in the dark sent shivers down the spines of even the most hardened killers. But fear had an answer—one the world had learned to rely on.

Phantom.

A legendary assassin. A specter of death. No one knew their true face, only the trail of bodies they left behind. Governments, secret organizations, and crime lords alike had used Phantom to eliminate the impossible. And now, the impossible had a name.

Jin-Ho Kang.

---

Jin-Ho felt the disturbance before it even happened. Sitting in his void-like chamber, he watched the flickering shadows on the walls, his army resting within the abyss, awaiting his command.

[Warning: An unknown presence has entered your domain. Estimated threat level: Severe.]

His golden eyes flickered open. "Finally, someone interesting."

---

The city's tallest skyscraper stood empty. A decoy location Jin-Ho had chosen for his first public stand against the forces hunting him. He knew they would come, and so he waited, seated upon a blackened throne formed from the abyss itself.

A sudden shift in the air. The sound of absolute silence.

Then—

A blade sliced through the darkness, aimed directly at his throat. Jin-Ho leaned to the side, evading it by mere millimeters. His attacker landed soundlessly a few feet away. A figure clad in a tight, form-fitting suit made of an unknown material that absorbed all light, their face hidden behind a sleek, featureless mask.

"You must be Phantom," Jin-Ho mused, rising from his throne. "Took you long enough."

No response. Only movement.

Phantom vanished in a blur, reappearing behind Jin-Ho with another strike. Jin-Ho caught the blade with two fingers, the metal screeching as his grip tightened. But before he could counter, Phantom twisted impossibly, flipping over him and delivering a kick that sent Jin-Ho skidding back.

"Fast," Jin-Ho acknowledged. "But speed alone isn't enough."

The assassin responded with a hail of attacks, each more precise than the last. Jin-Ho dodged, countered, deflected. But something was different. Phantom wasn't just a skilled human—there was something unnatural about their movements, something beyond normal limits.

[Analyzing opponent...]

Jin-Ho smirked. "Oh? You're not entirely human, are you?"

Phantom still didn't speak, but Jin-Ho could sense the tiniest shift in their posture—a flicker of surprise. That was all he needed.

He attacked.

---

The battle raged across the skyscraper, the two figures moving at speeds no normal person could perceive. Shadows clashed with the assassin's unnatural agility, each exchange sending shockwaves through the air. Below, civilians remained blissfully unaware of the war waged above them.

Jin-Ho's patience began to wane. He had fought monsters, beasts, and armies. One assassin, no matter how skilled, would not change the inevitable. His aura flared, the abyss responding to his call.

"Enough."

Shadows erupted from his body, tendrils lashing out at Phantom from every direction. The assassin tried to escape, but Jin-Ho had already anticipated their moves. The darkness closed in, sealing every possible route.

For the first time, Phantom hesitated.

Jin-Ho moved in for the finishing blow.

And then—

A blinding light exploded between them, shattering the night.

---

When Jin-Ho's vision cleared, Phantom was gone. Only a single silver emblem remained on the ground where they had stood. He picked it up, examining the intricate design—an insignia he didn't recognize.

[New Entity Detected: Unknown Organization]

Jin-Ho's smirk returned. "This just got interesting."

The world wasn't just hunting him. Someone—something—was orchestrating a game far greater than he had realized.

And he was ready to play.
