“Familiarity breeds fondness.” Guo Siming watched as Xu Qigang carried Sheng Ning in, nodding nonchalantly at the couple.
“Yes,” Xu Qigang replied succinctly, laying her down on the hospital bed.
“Your wife?” Guo Siming didn’t move, continuing to satisfy his curiosity.
“First, take off her clothes…”
“Bam…” Before Guo Siming could finish his sentence, Xu Qigang had knocked him to the ground with a punch. His nose was bleeding profusely, looking even worse than Sheng Ning.
“Say that again?” Xu Qigang grabbed Guo Siming by the collar, lifting him up with one hand.
“Captain, I was wrong, you misunderstood me.” Fortunately, the intellectual’s mind worked quickly. Though his vision darkened from the blow, it didn’t stop him from thinking.
When he recalled what he had just said, he regretted it so much, he wanted to punch himself. Maybe by tomorrow, the whole district would know that he, Guo Siming, a cultured, tempered, and quality intellectual, was a damn ruffian.
He really didn’t mean to make her take off her clothes! It was just that Xu Qigang’s grunt had shocked him. He couldn’t believe that Xu Qigang had actually managed to marry such a beautiful wife.
“It’s the pants that need to be rolled up, her knee is scraped…” Guo Siming raised his hands in surrender, blood dripping from his nose onto the ground. It was a mess and he looked extremely disheveled, especially in front of Xu Qigang, who he couldn’t gather the nerve to defy.

“Put me down first, I’ll call a nurse. This small injury doesn’t need my personal attention.” Xu Qigang still looked stern, and his silence was so daunting that not just Guo Siming but even Sheng Ning was scared.
“He didn’t mean it.” Sheng Ning gently tugged on Xu Qigang’s sleeve, “Don’t be angry.”
Xu Qigang’s tense body suddenly relaxed, and he let go of Guo Siming’s collar. His eyes, filled with ferocity, gradually calmed down before turning to look at Sheng Ning. He swallowed hard, his voice hoarse, “Don’t worry, I’ll have a nurse come in to attend to you.”
Without waiting for Sheng Ning to respond, he picked up Guo Siming like a little chicken and whisked him out.
At the entrance of the medical room, Xu Qigang sat on the steps, continually smoking, his expression frighteningly dark.
Guo Siming had cotton balls stuffed in his nostrils to stop the nosebleed. Sitting beside him like a little wife, he lit a cigarette for himself. Just as Xu Qigang’s cigarette finished, he hurriedly lit another one.
“Captain, I’m sorry, don’t take it to heart. That’s my sister-in-law, I just spoke too fast and said the wrong thing.” Guo Siming knew that if this misunderstanding wasn’t cleared up, it was all over.
“I know,” Xu Qigang nodded.
It seemed he had not only scared Xiao Ning but also Guo Siming. He knew Guo Siming didn’t mean it; it was just a slip of the tongue without thought.
But knowing was one thing, not being angry was another.
He took a deep drag of his cigarette, bathing in the splendid evening sky. Suddenly, he stood up, threw the cigarette butt on the ground, and stomped it out fiercely before turning back inside.
In the ward, Sheng Ning’s knees and elbows had already been treated with iodine, looking quite frightful although it was nothing serious. She just couldn’t get them wet, or they would heal slowly.
“How are you?” Xu Qigang strode in, “I’ll take you back to the dormitory.”
Having flirted enough on the way here, Sheng Ning knew when to back off. Moreover, in the General Union, she still hadn’t moved up, so she must maintain a low profile.
“No need, I’ll go back myself.”
“I’ll walk you to the door,” Xu Qigang insisted.
