“Laidi, this little bitch is too wicked. Don’t let her go,” Second Aunt Qin egged on gleefully from the side.
“I’ll fight you to the death!” Ding Laidi lunged forward, grabbing Sheng Ning’s hair and starting to bite. “Little bitch, I’ll show you, I’ll make you pay.”
Sheng Ning’s violent streak also flared up as she fought back, her eyes turning red as she brawled with Ding Laidi.
“Stop fighting, stop fighting…” Second Aunt Qin’s pretense of breaking up the fight only encouraged it more.
Sheng Ning, boiling with rage, simply grabbed Second Aunt Qin’s hair and dragged her into the fight.
Qi Lei drove his tractor into the village, just in time to see the three of them brawling by the river. Initially, he wanted to ignore it, but upon recognizing familiar faces, he quickly stopped the vehicle and ran over.
As he got closer, he found Sheng Ning holding her own against both opponents. He was both amused and exasperated.
“Stop fighting,” Qi Lei commanded. “Ding Laidi, bring your brother out here. I’ll break his damn legs.” His words immediately brought the fierce brawl to a halt.
Sheng Ning’s hair was disheveled, and her clothes were torn in several places. Fortunately, she was wearing old clothes from home today. If her union clothes had been ripped, she would have been heartbroken.
Looking at the two miserable opponents, Sheng Ning couldn’t help but laugh. Hahaha… They looked worse than she did, giving her a sense of relief.
Qi Lei, seeing her still able to laugh, found her reaction even more intriguing.
Sheng Ning turned her head and met Qi Lei’s gaze. She was surprised to recognize him as the man from the car yesterday. She instantly felt embarrassed, as if caught red-handed.
“Come on, let’s go to your house,” Qi Lei said, glancing at Ding Laidi, who hurriedly followed him in fear.
People around them whispered, “That’s Qi Mei’s older brother, the village chief’s brother-in-law. He must be here to back up Qi Mei.”
“Look, he’s driving a tractor! Oh my god… That’s the first time I’ve seen a tractor!”
Sheng Ning also curiously glanced at it. Seeing a tractor in the modern countryside was akin to seeing a Maserati later in life.
After picking up the scattered clothes and re-washing them, Sheng Ning hurried home. Upon entering, she saw that her parents had returned from work.
Sheng An saw her and gave a thumbs-up. “Nice, I didn’t know you had this kind of backbone.” After yesterday and today, Sheng An was starting to believe what their mom said.
Maybe she really was changing.
Sheng Ning, though looking disheveled, couldn’t help but raise an eyebrow proudly at Sheng An’s comment. She had endured all kinds of insults since childhood.
But no one had ever said anything good about her. Starting today, she didn’t want to endure anymore; she had had enough.
Sheng An spat, “Look at your sorry state!” His tone was finally less harsh than before.
“Who’s Dad talking to?”
“Xiao Hong’s uncle, here to pick her up.”
In the main hall, Qi Lei handed over two bottles of baijiu, putting them on the table, and said sincerely, “I really appreciate you and your daughter. If it weren’t for you, my sister would’ve been lost for sure.”
After Qi Mei woke up, she had immediately recounted everything in detail to her family.
“We’re neighbors, it’s only right to help each other,” Sheng Laosan, who wasn’t good with words, tried to return the baijiu. But Qi Lei, holding Xiao Hong, left directly. As he walked out the door, he deliberately turned to look at Sheng Ning.
On the rescue team’s training ground, intense drills were underway. Everyone was covered in mud, exhausted and cursing inwardly. Although some had already left, the daily high-intensity training never ceased. With the Captain watching closely from the sidelines, not one person dared to slack off.
