Sinner System Chapter 20

Oh, you have got to be kidding me. So much for my passive luck boost, this is a pretty fucking rotten stroke of luck.

I let out a quiet, annoyed sigh as I slumped back in my seat, staring at the holographic display of my I-Watch in irritation.

Today’s the 7th of March, 2168, the following Monday.

The Practical Training session had ended an hour early today, since the teams for the upcoming raids next week had been decided, and Glenn wanted to give us the opportunity to engage with our teammates.

I didn’t really have anyone in particular I wanted to be teamed up with, I’d have been fine with whoever, with one exception.

Out of the nineteen other students, I wouldn’t have had a problem with any four out of the eighteen excluding that one exception.

Naturally, I was referring to Trey, the class’s resident arrogant dickhead. He’s made an effort to go out of his way to insult and bully all the students with J-Ranked Potential, and he especially targeted me in those efforts.

I do my best to just ignore him until he gets bored and moves on to a different target, which does work, but he still really pisses me off.

So, I was less than thrilled to find out that I’d be stuck on the same team as him for my first raid.

"Um, excuse me, Kaivel? Hi, I’ve been assigned to the same team as you, I wanted to let you know that we’re going to be holding a meeting in an empty classroom in a few minutes," One of my classmates said to me as she walked over and got my attention.

"Hm? Oh, alright, thanks for letting me know. Also, just call me Kai," I replied with a polite smile, as I stood up and stretched my arms out.

I’ve never really liked my full first name, Kaivel, I was bullied a bit for it through elementary and middle school since it’s not exactly a common name.

And once the other kids noticed that you can’t spell it without all the letters in the word ’evil’, I was subject to an endless stream of stupid puns.

That’s why I prefer to go by Kai, it’s nice and simple, not to mention a lot more lowkey.

I have thought about changing it, but my mother gave me that name, it’s pretty much all I have left of her at this point, so I just can’t bring myself to throw it away.

Anyway, I followed my classmate as she led the way to the room where the team I’d been assigned to was meeting in, before entering as we arrived outside the door, two of the others already inside.

Looks like Trey isn’t here yet...maybe he slipped, fell and broke his neck or something. Well, probably not, but that’d be nice.

As I walked over and took a seat, I glanced back as the door opened, Trey stepping in before shutting the door behind him.

Tch, his neck is perfectly intact, so much for that.

<Your irritation at such an unlikely chain of events not playing out is rather illogical>

Yeah, I know.

"Looks like I’m the only one worth a damn in this team, guess I’m going to have to carry you losers during the raid. Well, I suppose that works out fine, it’s a good opportunity to demonstrate my value. Just try to stay out of my way," He scoffed condescendingly, as he took a seat.

That’s the first thing he says immediately after getting here? This doesn’t bode well.

"Uh, right, sure. Anyway...I’m sure there’s no need for any introductions, so let’s get straight to it, shall we? We should start off by discussing our formation and what kind of roles each of us should play," Spoke up one of the others.

Actually, introductions would be helpful, I don’t really remember any of their names. Well, whatever, it’s not that big a problem, I’ve already got all their info stored in Appraisal.

<True, but their stats and Power Levels are likely outdated by now, you will have to use Appraisal on them again to update those details>

I’ll do that on the day of the raid, they’re probably going to be training hard over the next couple of weeks, and it’d be a pain to have to update their info over and over.

The group then began discussing how we’d proceed during the raid, making suggestions on what kind of roles would best suit each of us.

While I don’t technically have a Hunter Class, since my Classes of Sin are unique to me, I’d say my close-combat fighting style that has a high emphasis on speed and agility is closest to the Assassin Class.

As for the others, Trey has his Water Magic, and the other three include two Support Mages, a Healer with J-Rank Potential and a Detector with Q-Rank Potential, and the last member is a Lancer with K-Rank Potential.

Since I can’t be bothered to remember their names, I’ll just refer to them by their Classes instead.

"It’s probably best if we keep things simple. You and I should be at the front since we specialize in close-range," I said to the Lancer, before continuing as I glanced at Trey, "And you should stay at around mid-range and back us up with your Water Magic, while also protecting the Support Mages, who will naturally be at the back of the formation."

"Yeah, that sounds good to me, nice and logical. This formation makes sure that each of us in the positions we’re best suited for, so-...," The Lancer began to nod in agreement.

"Absolutely not. Check the email we got, I’ve been chosen to lead this team, so I make the final decisions. And I don’t agree with this formation," Declared Trey with a huff.

Grr...

<Calm down, Kai, think happy thoughts>

"Mind telling us what exactly you have an issue with?" I inquired calmly, doing my best not to lose my temper.

"It should be obvious, you weakling dumbass. Why should I, the strongest one here, be relegated to the back? Wouldn’t it make more sense for me to lead the way?

Therefore, the formation will be perfect if you and I switch places. I’ll be at the front, while you protect the Support Mages!" He stated smugly, looking pretty proud of himself.

Is...is he fucking serious right now? His close-combat skills are pretty damned abysmal, while his Spells are admittedly quite high level at this point.

With that in mind, he’d be way more effective providing back-up with ranged attacks from mid-range. This isn’t about the formation, he just wants to give himself the best chance to stand out.

I did sense a slight element of deception through the passive lie detection ability I get from my Envy Class, that all but confirms it.

The others tried to persuade him to see reason, but he adamantly refused to budge. For Hunters, the leader of the party, simply referred to as the Captain, gets final say in any decisions.

Of course, any half-decent leader would have the sense to get the opinions of their party members when considering important decisions, but unfortunately for me and the rest of this team, we couldn’t possibly have ended up with a worse leader...
