Sky Star Chapter 24

Chapter 24: A Shroud of Suspicion

The night was as thick as ink, enveloping the Celestial Domain camp in impenetrable darkness. Only a few scattered bonfires flickered weakly, like the last glimmers of hope struggling against the abyss. Yet, rather than dispelling the gloom, these faint lights only cast deeper shadows on the anxious faces of those present.

Xiao Chen stood alone at the heart of the camp, an imposing yet weary figure, like a solitary peak against the night sky. His gaze remained fixed on the ground where a mysterious marking had once appeared. Though it had since vanished without a trace, the eerie blue glow it emitted lingered in his mind like a curse, gnawing at his thoughts. Where did this marking come from? Why did it appear here, at this moment? he murmured, his voice low and hoarse, like an ancient bell long buried in dust, its chime echoing through the silent night. Each word carried the weight of deep confusion and unease, settling heavily upon the camp.

Yun Yi, too, wore a troubled expression. He paced restlessly beside the fire, his steps quick and erratic, like an ant trapped on a hot pan. Every few strides, he would stop and glance at Xiao Chen, his eyes filled with uncertainty and frustration. “Xiao Chen, something about this feels off. If that mysterious force wanted to help us, why act in secrecy? But if it meant us harm, why did it intervene during the beast attack? It simply doesn’t make sense.” His furrowed brows deepened, his words crackling in the air like scattered sparks, desperately trying to illuminate the mystery, only to be swallowed by the night once more.

Ling Xue let out a soft sigh, as delicate as a falling petal, breaking the silence. She stepped forward gracefully, placing a gentle hand on Xiao Chen’s arm, offering a silent comfort. “We must not let anxiety cloud our judgment. The more uncertain the situation, the calmer we must be. Perhaps we have overlooked something crucial. If we think carefully, we may find a clue.” Her voice was as soothing as a spring breeze, carrying a quiet strength. Yet, the slight tremble of her fingertips betrayed her inner unrest—like the hidden undercurrents beneath a seemingly tranquil lake.

As they fell into contemplation, a faint rustling sound whispered from the edge of the camp, like the murmurs of a ghost. In the stillness of the night, it was magnified tenfold, slicing through the silence like a chilling wind and sending a shiver down their spines. The patrol guards reacted instantly, springing to action like tautened springs. Their hands gripped their weapons with precision, and in the blink of an eye, they had formed a defensive formation, their gazes sharp as stars in the night sky—watchful, unwavering, and ready to strike.

Xiao Chen’s eyes gleamed coldly, like a blade flashing in the dark. In a swift motion, he dashed towards the source of the sound, a streak of black lightning. Yun Yi and Ling Xue followed without hesitation, their movements fluid and synchronised, like shadows bound by the same pulse. Within moments, they arrived at the scene, only to find a young guard trembling in fear. His eyes were wide with terror, resembling a startled fawn, his breath uneven. Pointing a quivering finger ahead, he stammered, “L-Lord Xiao… I was patrolling here when a sudden chill swept over me. Then, I saw… this…”

Everyone followed his gaze to the ground. There, faintly visible in the dirt, was a shallow, winding groove—like a dormant serpent lying in wait. A dim blue glow pulsed from within, carrying the same aura as the previous mysterious marking. The sight sent a chill through them all.

Xiao Chen crouched, his movements reverent, like a devout seeker before a sacred relic. His eyes locked onto the groove as his fingers lightly traced its surface, as though trying to awaken the secrets buried within. The moment he touched it, an icy force surged from the ground, racing through his fingertips and into his body. A sharp shudder ran through him. His brows knitted together in a deep frown, as though he were entangled in a game of riddles with no solution. “This groove seems simple, yet it hides a deeper mystery. It must be connected to the marking and the beasts… But what exactly does it mean?” His voice was strained, as though forcing words through clenched teeth, filled with both apprehension and relentless determination—like a wanderer lost in a labyrinth, searching desperately for a way out yet refusing to give up.

Yun Yi’s face mirrored his solemnity. Like a strategist deep in thought, he paced slowly around the groove, his sharp gaze dissecting every detail. Sometimes he crouched to observe the glow’s flickering rhythm, sometimes he scanned the surroundings, seeking patterns in the chaos. “Judging by the energy fluctuations, it seems to be conveying a message. But what kind of message? A warning? Or guidance?” he murmured, his words rippling through the air like stones cast into a deep pool—spreading, but never quite reaching clarity.

Ling Xue’s vigilant eyes swept the area, sharp and alert, like a sentry standing guard in the dead of night. Her voice, though soft, carried an unmistakable urgency. “No matter what, we must remain on high alert. Our camp is like a lone boat in a storm—danger lurks in every shadow. A single misstep, and we may never recover.” Her words rang like a solemn bell, stirring the hearts of those present. The guards tightened their grips on their weapons, patrols doubled, and an iron defence was set in place.

Yet, the glowing groove remained—a silent enigma, resting in the earth, mocking their ignorance. Like the Sword of Damocles hanging over the Celestial Domain, it threatened to fall at any moment, bringing forth an unknown catastrophe…
