Son Goku's Disciple Naruto Chapter 16

Minato... he didn't understand the human heart.

The hatred Naruto endured from childhood was ten times worse than anything Kushina had faced. At least Kushina had Mito Uzumaki looking out for her when she was small. Naruto had no one.

When he was hungry, he had to find food himself. No one checked if he'd eaten, or eaten well. He couldn't sleep, surrounded by hostility, and no one cared when he finally drifted off. He cried himself to sleep some nights, clutching his blanket, and no one knew how exhausted he was. When he fell, he had to get up on his own. No one tended his scrapes. He came home aching from training, and no one saw the effort he poured into it. No one. Ever.

Naruto was utterly alone.

And then, even the one link he should have had-his identity as the Fourth Hokage's son-was stolen. They hid it, claiming it was for his protection, to shield him from his father's enemies.

All they really cared about was whether he was obedient. Whether the Jinchuriki was stable. Whether he might develop a rebellious heart towards Konoha. They treated him like a weapon, not a child.

Only later, as Naruto got a little older, did the Third Hokage start appearing occasionally. An old man stopping by, pretending to care, trying to win his trust... sometimes even taking the few grilled fish Naruto had managed to catch for himself. 'He's just a child,' they must have thought. 'He won't remember. He's alone.' It felt like charity, tossed his way.

But Naruto remembered. He remembered everything, from the moment he was born until now. Every detail, crystal clear.

As these images flashed before Minato's eyes, he fell silent. His usual sunny expression clouded over, replaced by a grim intensity. It was clear his mind was reeling. He and Kushina had given their lives to protect Naruto and the village. He'd sealed the Nine-Tails into his own son, believing the village would see him as a hero.

Instead, they treated him like a curse. He wasn't just disliked, he struggled for the basic necessities of life. The disconnect was staggering, almost impossible to accept.

The villager's coldness. The Third Hokage's failure to act.

Even Kakashi the disciple he had entrusted his life to, his Hokage Guard Platoon he spent so many months training, where were they in Naruto's memories? Where had they all gone?

"Sandaime-sama... But why?" Minato whispered, a tremor in his voice, clinging to a shred of hope.

He'd trusted the Third. Trusted him enough to leave Konoha's reins largely in his hands even after becoming Hokage. Trusted him enough that his dying act was to place Naruto in his care. Because he respected him. Because he trusted him.

And it seemed that trust had been misplaced. Utterly. Naruto's childhood was nothing like what he'd envisioned. Why had the path he laid turned out so wrong?

If Naruto could have answered, the words would have been simple: 'Because you died.'

Loyalty fades when the leader falls. It's an old, hard truth.

Minato might have been brilliant in every other way-a gifted ninja, a master strategist, sunny, charismatic, the perfect Hokage in many eyes. But he didn't understand the human heart. People change. Their hearts change.

Faced with power, with self-interest, even a respected elder like the Third could become hypocritical. Even loyal guards, men he considered brothers, could choose self-preservation.

Never test people's deepest natures, you won't like what you find.

Naruto's next words shattered whatever hope Minato had left:

"I am a Jinchuriki," Naruto stated flatly. "The strongest one. The Nine-Tails Jinchuriki."

It seemed unrelated, almost a non-sequitur, but it struck at the heart of the matter. Blunt, but true.

Minato had become Hokage, he wasn't naive about politics. He understood instantly. His final request, his entrustment of Naruto... it paled in comparison to Naruto's status.

The Nine-Tails Jinchuriki. The ultimate strategic weapon. Konoha's greatest deterrent. Control the Jinchuriki, control the Tailed Beast. Control the Tailed Beast, control immense power. It was why Danzo had been so obsessed with getting Naruto into Root.

Minato knew his own rise to Hokage wasn't just about his skills. A crucial, undeniable factor... he was married to Kushina, the previous Jinchuriki.

If Naruto hadn't been the Jinchuriki, if the Nine-Tails wasn't sealed inside him... then his identity as the Fourth's son wouldn't have needed hiding. The Third might have kept his promise, raised Naruto as Minato had asked. Maybe Naruto's childhood would have been like Minato dreamed: celebrated, cherished, like a hero. A happy childhood.

But the lure of the Nine-Tails was too strong.

When power struggles consume a village, its destruction isn't far behind. Just as Orochimaru had said: "A rotten village, a rotten Konoha... better to burn it down."

'Where leaves dance, flames burn. The fire's shadow illuminates the village, and new leaves sprout.' It sounded profound once, but it felt like nonsense now. Fire just burns the tree. It doesn't bring life. The fire's shadow illuminates the village... and burns it to ash. That felt closer to the truth. Only when the rotten tree falls, decays completely, and becomes nourishment can new life truly grow.

"I... I'm sorry, Naruto," Minato choked out, guilt raw in his voice. His eyes flickered, unable to meet his son's identical blue gaze. "I didn't know..."

"It's okay," Naruto said, his voice unnervingly calm, as if discussing someone else entirely. "I'm used to it."

Those words-'I'm used to it'-hit Minato harder than any physical blow. Heartbreak and guilt twisted inside him. His son. His and Kushina's only child. The boy who carried all her hopes... trampled like this. If Kushina knew... she'd tear Konoha apart to avenge him.

Minato's chakra, usually as warm as sunlight, grew cold, heavy.

People saw the Fourth Hokage as pure sunlight-the perfect leader, gentle and kind. That's how Konoha knew him. But the brighter the light, the deeper the shadow. Ask the ninja of Iwa or Kumo. To them, Minato Namikaze was death incarnate.

The name 'Yellow Flash' wasn't earned through pleasantries. It was earned with speed that defied sight, with battles won in heartbeats. Annihilating fifty Iwa Jonin instantly, moving through enemy lines like a phantom... he had struck fear across the nations.

Minato was no stranger to ruthlessness. He was a ninja. The only Hokage from common birth, clawed up from the blood and chaos of war.

His sunshine was reserved for his own people.
