SSS Ranked Talent: I Can Upgrade My Skills Infinitely Chapter 17

The cave became an arena. The enemy: cold, relentless and encroaching. Alvian’s mind...stripped of game-breaking skills...transformed into his ultimate weapon. It operated with detached precision. A master tactician breaking down the blizzard’s overwhelming threat into smaller problems. Manageable ones.

The fire came first. Their heart. Their life source. Dying. Anna’s small pile of branches would be consumed within minutes. Going outside meant death. The storm guaranteed it. The solution existed in brutality and necessity. His eyes found the cave’s single piece of furniture: a rickety wooden crate Anna used as a makeshift table.

"Anna." His voice cut through her shivering fear, calm but firm. "I need that crate."

She looked at it. Then back at him. Confusion clouded her face. "But... it’s where I keep my drawings..."

"We need it for fuel. The crate or we freeze." The harsh reality left no room for argument. She hesitated. A small, sad nod followed.

Alvian moved immediately. He took the crate. A sharp, efficient stomp of his heel shattered it into dry, splintered wood. He fed the pieces into the fire carefully, one by one, husbanding the resource. The flames...starved for fuel...greedily licked at the fresh wood. They roared back to life with a comforting, crackling sound. Temperature in the small cave rose by precious degrees.

The shelter itself came next. A sieve. Leaking warmth at an alarming rate. Dripping water from the ceiling spelled death for their fire. He scanned every surface, eyes moving systematically. He found it: a network of small cracks directly above the fire pit. Sealing them from inside was impossible. Diversion, though? Possible. He grabbed his now-empty pack, tore the waterproof inner lining out, wedged it into the cracks. A crude gutter. Effective. It channeled dripping water away from flames into a corner.

Wind proved more insidious. Whistling through a dozen unseen fissures in rock. Insulation became key. He observed snow piled just inside the cave’s entrance.

"Anna, I need your help." His tone softened slightly. "We need to pack snow into the cracks in the walls. It will keep the wind out."

Watching him work with such purpose calmed the young girl. Fear was being replaced. Slowly. A fragile spark of hope emerged. She nodded. Together they gathered loose snow, stuffing it into every crack and crevice they could find. A technique from his past life. A desperate measure survivors used to insulate ruined buildings. The packed snow acted as a surprisingly effective barrier. The relentless, mournful howl of wind reduced to a dull, distant moan.

They had built a bastion. A tiny pocket of warmth and life carved from the storm’s heart.

Anna remained in danger though. The [Moderate Hypothermia] debuff was still active. Her vitality slowly ticking down. Fire could warm air. Her core temperature stayed dangerously low.

Alvian opened his survival kit. He took out the small medkit. Inside was a foil emergency blanket. He unfolded it...the crinkling sound loud in the now-quieter cave.

"Here." He wrapped the reflective blanket around her, over her worn one. "This will reflect your body heat back to you." He sat down next to her. Close but not touching. Positioning himself between her and the cave entrance. Using his own body as another shield against cold.

"Tell me about your father." His voice came out quiet. He needed to keep her talking. Keep her awake. Letting her fall asleep now could prove fatal.

Anna bundled in blankets, reassured by his calm presence, began to speak. She talked about her father. Klaus. A woodcutter and toymaker. She told him about the wooden bird charm he had carved for her. A charm he said would always protect her. As she spoke her shivering lessened. A faint touch of color returned to her cheeks.

[Anna’s Status: [Moderate Hypothermia] has been downgraded to [Mild Hypothermia]. Vitality is no longer decreasing.]

Alvian allowed himself a small internal sigh of relief. He had stabilized the situation. Now they only had to outlast the storm. Hours crawled by. He methodically fed the fire with crate remains. Melted snow in his canteen for them to drink. Kept Anna engaged in conversation. A silent, vigilant guardian. His focus absolute.

Something changed finally. After what felt like an eternity. The relentless, oppressive roar of wind began subsiding. Faint, pale light began filtering through the snow-packed entrance. The storm was breaking.

A system notification flashed in his vision. This one a brilliant, triumphant gold.

[Ding! The blizzard has subsided.]

[You have successfully protected the civilian asset, Anna.]

[Calculating final performance score... Survival parameters met. Asset vitality maintained above critical threshold. Shelter integrity maintained. Resource management: Optimal.]

[Final Score: PERFECT]

[Congratulations, you have achieved a Perfect Clear on your first Temporal Simulation attempt.]

[A special reward will be granted. The primary mission item is undergoing a qualitative transformation.]

Alvian’s gaze was drawn immediately to Anna’s hands. The small wooden bird charm she had been clutching...the one her father Klaus had given her...began to glow. Soft purple light emanated from the simple piece of wood. Pulsing in time with a gentle, humming sound. The light grew brighter. Warmer. Enveloping the charm in a cocoon of pure energy. The wood seemed to dissolve. Its form melting away as light coalesced. Solidifying into a new, far more intricate shape.

The light faded. Leaving a single, beautiful object resting in Anna’s open palms. A ring. Forged from dark, polished metal that seemed to absorb light. Set with a single deep purple gem pulsing with faint inner luminescence.

The simulation world around him began dissolving. The cave. The fire. The smiling, grateful face of Anna fading into a sea of white data. But the image of the ring remained. The immense power he could feel radiating from it even through simulation was burned into his mind. His intellect and will had been tested. His reward was at hand.
