He Teng had another headache. "Zhilan, you’re still young and your future is unpredictable. Nothing is certain. Reputation is very important to you. If something happens again, let me know. I might not be able to offer much help but I’ll do whatever I can. Also, Gu En leaving Capital University isn’t necessarily a good thing for you. The most worrying thing about someone doing bad things is when they do them in the dark, in places you can’t see, where you’re caught off guard," He Teng warned her.
"I understand." He Zhilan nodded. Chen Yun had stopped following Gu En’s every move. After all, this is the capital, and without a good reason, the Gu Family would never allow Chen Yun’s people to tail Gu En.
But He Teng was right. When Gu En was in Capital University, he was at least in the same dormitory building as her. He didn’t dare to do anything too blatantly because people in the building knew each other. If she did something, someone might tell her.
But now that he left Capital University, she felt like a crocodile that had moved from a small pond to a large lake, where she could swim freely without worrying about prying eyes.
"Brother, let’s talk." He Zhilan pointed to a patch of grass nearby, sat down, and patted the spot next to her, motioning for He Teng to sit down with her.
After He Teng sat down as she wished, she leaned her head onto He Teng’s shoulder without diverting her gaze.
"Brother, I really don’t understand why you suddenly became so adamant about not being with me. I don’t know if the attitude of Gu Zhilan has made any changes, but what I do know, is that I love you. And you, you have feelings for me, too. This alone is enough to ensure that I will never change this desire in my entire life. Maybe you think I’m young and don’t know what the future holds, but I swear to you, no matter where I end up, my feelings for you will never change," she said.
Taking a pause, He Zhilan added in a soft voice, "Just like when I was looking for my biological parents. Despite the many obstacles, I never gave up. You should understand my persistence."
He Teng remained quiet. Maybe he, himself, didn’t know what to say.
He Zhilan wasn’t discouraged. After all, He Teng was like a block of wood, and she’d eventually make him warm up. Her determination was one of her best qualities. Determined, she wouldn’t let go, even if it killed her.
"Brother, look!" He Zhilan held out her right hand and intertwined with He Teng’s left. Laughing lightly, she said, "Maybe in a previous life we were lovers who regretfully parted. So, I have a mole on the inside of my right arm, and you have one on your left. I read in a book once that in such cases, the two share a bond from a past life that was unable to culminate, leaving these moles as marks of regret and destiny, to continue in this life."
He Zhilan didn’t know if others believed it, but she did.
"Like those romantic films, you believe in these fairytales in your girly books." He Teng looked down at their entwined arms. Looking at both their moles, one on his left and one her right, in the same position, he had to admit she did have a point.
He Teng wondered if it was just a coincidence.
He had never noticed his own mole or the one on He Zhilan’s arm before. If He Zhilan hadn’t brought it up, he never would’ve known.
