Steampunk Era: Mad Abield Chapter 176

Having charged down the street, Malin and the City Guards and armed civilians following him ran into trouble; a barricade blocked their way. Looking at the barricade before him, Malin felt the impotence of Spell Formations for the first time—no spell could be utilized within an anti-magic zone, and both his Flame Burst Fireball and Giant Table Flip... no, his Spiked Wave disappeared without a trace as soon as they entered the area.

After signaling a round of futile Array attacks, the mages in the sky also chose to give up, making Malin miss the coordination on open ground once again.

This damn world, without cannons, without planes, not even grenade launchers, he only had a few grenades in his hand. Throwing them at people was fine, but at a barricade, these toys were useless. They couldn’t even blast away the furniture in front of the barricade.

Was he supposed to fill the gap with lives? Did a rubbish barricade require a blood sacrifice?!

Before Malin could find a way through, the City Guards had already started changing their clothes—they put on thick clothes found in nearby homes, stuffed the chest armor and helmets with all the cotton they could find that might stop a bullet. These City Guards didn’t even complain; they defined what it meant to be indifferent to life and death, ready to face the challenge.

Malin thought it over and halted their suicide mission. Considering that most of the weapons in Chaos’s hands were old-fashioned smoothbore muskets with round shots, and even lever-action rifles were a rarity, Malin gathered some tables, cut off the legs, nailed them together with water-soaked thick blankets stuffed in the middle, found a few carts from the nearby market area, and transformed them into shield carts for the City Guards to push forward.

The effect was good. The old guns and round shots of Chaos might penetrate the first layer of tables, but they could not go through the thick blankets. Originally, the Chaos Magicians could use spells to attack the shield carts, but they were themselves in the anti-magic zone and could only watch helplessly as the shield carts drew closer under fire.

Then the Chaotic Believers began their counter-charge—at the same time, the shield carts were opened, and the Archers on both sides began firing. Since they couldn’t block them, they would drive them away.

In some ways, both sides could reach a consensus.

Malin emptied the four barrels of his Shotgun in one go, then charged forward with the heavily armored City Guards.

Old rules, fire a round with the Revolver, and then those on both sides who could still move crashed into each other.

Malin’s opponent was a Chaos Warrior who swung his Longsword disdainfully at Malin, hoping to cut him in two.

So the next second, as Malin blocked the slash with a twig, he pulled the trigger. The silver-infused .44 Hollow Point Bullet pierced the opponent’s forehead, turning the back of its head and brain into a thing of the past.

After holstering the Revolver, he caught the Longsword thrown aside by the descending Chaos. The super ability bestowed by the Lord of Justice, Nameless: Sacred Weapon, instantly purified the blade. Malin used it to slash an oncoming Chaotic Believer, then turned and sliced a Chaos Spawn trying to leap into the defenses in half.

The City Guards and Malin broke through the Chaotic Believers’ lines, and then the armed civilians, wielding all kinds of weapons, exchanged fire with the second wave of Chaotic Believers. The front ranks of both sides fell in an instant, and then the lucky ones crashed into each other again.

After handing over his Longsword to the Guard who had broken his spear, Malin reloaded the Revolver and drew his .50 caliber, firing wildly at any Chaos bold enough to stand before him.

The .50 caliber Revolver might not solve the problem, but in Malin’s hands, it could take care of any trash that caused problems.

The Chaos Warrior, grasping an axe, lost his life the moment his head stopped the bullet; the twisted Chaos Spawn couldn’t stand a gaping hole a few centimeters in diameter through its chest, and seeing an even larger Chaos Spawn, Malin lifted the four-barreled Shotgun from his waist.

No. 8 Hollow Point Bullets could always help their owner deal with some Chaos that the .50 caliber Revolver couldn’t handle.

With the fall of the Chaos Spawn, the City Guards roared and charged into the defensive line again, knocking down the Chaos before them and then stepping over their bodies.

The chaos at the street fortress in front of them was next, Malin led them to break through the fortress, knocked down the Chaos that tried to stand in their way like mantis arms to a chariot, and killed those that turned to flee. Only then did Malin realize that there were no more standing Chaos within the fortress.

A City Guard ran over to deliver a command, "We’re an entire block ahead of the other team, Lord Hoffman has said please watch your flanks for safety."

"Understood," Malin nodded and then turned to raise his firearm, "Advance! Take no prisoners!" As he looked at the Chaotic Believers kneeling by the roadside, Malin shouted loudly.

Armed civilians then raised their guns toward those believers.

Malin raised his gun as well and shot dead a Chaos Spawn that was hugging its head and shrieking in the corner of the street fortress.

Remember, Chaos is not human.

Mercy is not the gift to bestow upon them; bullets are.

If one bullet isn’t enough, then fire another.

If Malin could look down from the sky, he would see that his team was the fastest among the three moving toward the explosion site.

Aside from him, there was also a Chaos troop and another troop led by his mentor.

The Chaos troop was being harassed by mages; they lacked anti-air capabilities, and although the mages weren’t particularly adept at ground attacks, every precious second that they could delay the Chaos troops counted, and the mages were doing well.

Lord Hoffman’s troops were between Malin’s and the Chaos troop, their movements a bit slower since nobody in his unit could lift a four-barreled shotgun and shoot recklessly like a warrior.

Beyond that, in the outskirts of the city, the nearby garrison had begun assembling. The Sydney Union’s army was renowned for its well-trained soldiers, and for them, each legion was either fighting Chaos in the North or resting and recruiting in the rear, preparing to go fight Chaos.

Now, their problem was the lack of sufficient strength to break the array—only a Legendary being could possibly shatter the shield.

Besides that, they had another method: to bombard with artillery. The shield had a strong resistance to spell formations, but it was only a slightly tougher eggshell against physical attacks.

The only issue now was that in the Central Administrative Province, these things were regulated items, and typical legions were not allowed to have artillery within the Central Administrative Province.

As for the nobles... for any noble to possess such things would be no different than rebellion.

So, the soldiers outside could only watch and continue to struggle fiercely inside.
