Strongest Incubus System Chapter 92

Damon woke slowly, as if emerging from a heavy dream. The heat of the fire still illuminated the cave, but something was different. He blinked a few times, adjusting his vision, until he realized.

The weight on his body had disappeared.

His first reaction was to instinctively look for Ester, but he soon found her. She was there, her back to him, sitting before the fire. Fully dressed again. Her rigid posture, tense shoulders, and absolute silence betrayed more than any words could.

For a moment, Damon remained still, simply watching. The fire cast shadows on the wall, and her figure seemed even more unreachable than before, as if she had rebuilt in a few hours all the walls he had spent the entire night melting down.

He forced his voice, still hoarse from sleep. "...What happened?"

Ester didn't turn around. She remained motionless, as if the simple act of looking at him was too dangerous. Her voice was controlled, almost cold, but there was a slight waver she couldn't hide.

"The storm has passed."

Damon arched an eyebrow, rising slowly, leaning his back against the cave wall. His body ached, but it felt different. Warmer. Alive. The weakness had diminished considerably, replaced by an unexpected energy.

"So it was real…" he murmured, mostly to himself.

Ester, still motionless, continued. "The horses have probably already bolted. The noise of the storm must have scared them." She took a deep breath, straightening her posture, but not looking at him. "We'll have to walk to the next town."

Damon stared at her intently. Every word she said was firm, but the faint blush on her neck, visible even beneath the collar of her clothes, screamed something else. Shame. Embarrassment. And, perhaps, a hint of anger.

He let out a weak, teasing laugh, just to see her react. "Looks like someone isn't very happy with the situation."

Ester finally moved her head, just enough to give him a quick glance over her shoulder. Her eyes were heavy, a whirlwind of fury and embarrassment. But before he could comment, she looked away again, back at the fire.

"It's okay," Damon said more seriously, testing his fingers and slowly moving his legs. The heat had truly taken effect. He was recovered, stronger than he'd expected. "My body's already recovered."

It was then that he realized.

Ester murmured something. So softly it sounded like a thought escaping aloud. He couldn't quite make it out, but the tone... the tone was acidic.

He frowned, leaning forward slightly. "What? I didn't hear."

Ester remained motionless, tense as a taut string. The silence lasted for long seconds. Finally, she simply shook her head and replied coldly:

"Nothing."

But Damon knew her too well. Or at least, he was beginning to know her. Her low, almost poisonous tone was nothing like the Esther who hid everything in calculated words. That had been a slip-up. And, by the gods, he would give anything to know exactly what she had let slip.

A slow smile formed on his lips.

He leaned back against the cave wall, his eyes still fixed on her, taking advantage of the evident tension. "You're unusually flushed for someone who only cares about horses."

Ester closed her eyes for a moment, taking a deep breath, as if counting to ten to keep from throwing ice at him right then and there.

"Damon…" Her voice was low, thick with menace. "Don't start."

He laughed, low, hoarse, but without hiding the malice. "I didn't start anything. I'm just watching."

She stood up suddenly, the sudden movement accompanied by the creaking of the leather of her clothes. Standing, still with her back to him, she adjusted the sword at her waist and spoke firmly:

"We need to leave soon."

Damon was silent for a moment, simply admiring her. The way she avoided his eyes, the rigidity in her posture, the rush to change the subject… everything betrayed it. Ester Deathstriker was uncomfortable. And somehow, that was even more fascinating than the scene from hours ago.

He struggled to his feet, still feeling his muscles react to the movement, but holding her gaze. "Okay." His smile returned, crooked and teasing. "But just for the record… if I did take advantage of it, it wasn't just to recover."

Ester froze for a moment, before turning her head toward him. Her eyes were blazing, fury and embarrassment mingling in an almost dangerous way.

"You…" she began, her voice breaking for the first time since he'd woken up.

But she didn't finish the sentence.

She simply turned away, ignoring him, and began walking toward the cave entrance.

Damon followed her with a lazy smile on his face, but inside he felt the strange mix of curiosity and unease she always provoked.

As they passed through the cave's narrow exit, they were greeted by a sea of white that stretched as far as the eye could see. The storm had truly ceased. The snow reflected the pale light of the morning sun, transforming the landscape into a frozen, silent expanse.

Damon took a deep breath, the cold air entering his lungs like tiny blades, and let out a low laugh. "Wow... it feels like another world."

Ester, beside him, didn't answer. She just stared at the horizon, serious, her dark cloak contrasting against the pristine white.

Damon broke the silence, arching an eyebrow. "So... you defeated that ice monkey all by yourself?"

She shifted her gaze to him, as if the question were too obvious. "I killed it easily."

His eyes widened for a moment, then he laughed, shaking his head. "Easy, huh? I almost died from a gust of wind from that beast, and you talk like you scared a stray dog."

Ester didn't react, but the corner of her mouth twitched, as if holding back a comment she didn't want to say.

Damon stared at her, amused. "You know, I'm actually envious of your strength."

"Envious?" she repeated, finally turning her gaze to him.

He shrugged, a crooked smile on his face. "Of course. You always seem unshakable. Strong, cold, perfect. While I..." he gestured theatrically with his hands, feigning defeat, "I can barely keep up with you in half the battles."

The wind blew, stirring the fine snow around them. Ester was silent for a moment, her eyes fixed on the horizon. Then she spoke in a low, almost too calm tone:

"One day... you'll be that strong."

Damon stopped. The smile faded from his face as if wiped away by the icy wind. He blinked a few times, unsure if he'd heard correctly.

"...What?" His voice came out weaker than he'd intended.

Ester didn't look at him. She just stared into the endless white, as if talking to herself. "You'll become strong. More than you know."

Damon felt a shiver run through him that had nothing to do with the cold.

Ester never spoke like that. Never. He was used to her coldness, her dry comments, her cutting irony. But this? It sounded almost like a prophecy. A certainty she carried and had no intention of explaining.

He swallowed hard, trying to regain his provocative tone. "Look... Ester giving me hope? That's new."

She didn't answer. She just pulled her cloak tighter around her and began walking through the snow, without looking back.
