Sweet Vengeances Chapter 1

Standing at the doorway of the living room, Lily Harper's fingers gripped the doorframe as if it were the only thing keeping her from falling apart. She felt the intense rush of excitement rushing through her veins, overpowering the regular buzz of the metropolis outside. She gazed at her spouse of five years, Daniel, who was lounging on the couch with a smug grin on his face while browsing through his phone. Her presence escaped his notice. The tension in the room was not even acknowledged by him.

Why didn't he see it? As if the walls themselves were closing in on her, the air itself felt oppressive and heavy. There were knots in her gut. She felt as though a hammer was pounding on her chest with each heartbeat. She had arrived home early from work, hoping for nothing more than a peaceful evening with her spouse. Rather, something she had discovered would change her life forever.

The phone had been the first step.

While Lily was going to get a file from the study, she happened to catch a peek at Daniel's phone screen, which he had left on the kitchen counter. Initially, she hadn't given it any thought. As the years went by, their trust became stronger, and they both felt at ease in their marriage. But suddenly a name she recognized all too well—Cassandra—flitted over the screen.

When she saw the next messages, her heartbeat had accelerated. These were hardly harmless chats. They had a close relationship. In addition to communicating with Cassandra, her husband—the guy she had built her life with—was now sharing his deepest sentiments, wants, and physical characteristics with her.

The globe was skewed. Anger and incredulity mingled to obscure her eyesight. She was unable to breathe or think. She had the impression that she was falling freely into an endless abyss after the floor had fallen away from under her.

For an extended while, Lily stood motionless, absorbing the truth as it dawned on her. They had tricked her. The man who vowed to remain at her side forever and whom she loved had been living a lie. In the worst way possible, he had betrayed her. It was much worse because it involved her best friend Cassandra.

In the past, Lily trusted Cassandra like family and confided in her. How was she unable to perceive it? How could she have overlooked the inconspicuous looks, the persistent physical contact, and the way Daniel's eyes would brighten when he talked about her? Now it is all made clear. Her blindness had vanished.

The phone buzzed once more, and Cassandra's latest message appeared on the screen. Something about it drew Lily in like a magnet. Her hand shaking, she took up the phone and read the words that would mark the end of her life.

"I am excited for this evening. You are sorely missed. I enjoy how you make me feel.

A surge of sickness swept over Lily. The betrayal had been full. She sensed her world breaking apart and disintegrating.

Her thoughts were interrupted by Daniel's laugh. He remained seated, oblivious to the raging fury within her. The same self-assured, laid-back look that she had always loved was there on his face. He did not know at all. How could his actions have left him so composed and unconcerned?

Lily said, "Daniel," in a calm, icy tone. Despite her unsteady legs, she pushed herself to stand up to him. It felt as if no set of syllables could adequately convey the rage she was experiencing, and the phrases she had practiced in her thoughts were suddenly insufficient. She tightened her throat and swallowed hard. "Who is Cassandra?"

Daniel's eyebrows furrowed in perplexity as he looked up, and then a gradual smile appeared on his face. "Hi, sweetie. You're home early.

Her anger was sparked by the casualness of his tone. Gall. The insolence. As if she hadn't just revealed the most heartbreaking truth, he pretended that everything was as usual.

Lily's fingers clenched around the phone, nearly piercing her palm with the plastic. "Daniel, stop playing games. Everything is known to me.

For a brief moment, his smile wavered, but not long enough. Now the truth, spoken but evident, was in his eyes. He didn't make an effort to refute it.

There was no going back now, but Lily went on, her voice shaking with emotion, You're the other woman? You've been having extramarital affairs with her for more than a year. And don't attempt to convince me it wasn't serious or that you didn't intend for it to happen. I have witnessed everything.

Despite shifting uncomfortably in his chair, Daniel did not attempt to stop her. Both of them knew he was guilty. He opened his mouth to say something, but Lily interrupted.

"No. Stay silent. I'd rather not listen to that." Despite having weak legs, she took a step back and remained steadfast. Daniel, I believed that I knew you. I believed that you could be trusted. But now. The entire force of his treachery struck her, causing her voice to falter and crack slightly. "I now recognize you for who you truly are."

With a desperate tone in his voice, Daniel reached for her. "Hold on, Lily. I had no intention of hurting you." This is not what you believe—

As tears filled her eyes, she shook her head, refusing to let them fall. No, Daniel. We're finished.

She turned on her heel and walked out of the room, leaving him speechless. She stepped into the chilly night air as the door banged behind her, the sound reverberating in the deserted hallway. She stood on their shared apartment's doorstep, staring up at the city lights and breathing in rapid gasps.

Her heart hurt, but she also felt a burning need for vengeance and retribution, something deeper and more primordial. Although she had been deceived, she remained strong. They couldn't get away with it because of her. She'd hold them accountable.

Lily Harper silently vowed to herself as the chilly night encircled her. She'd get her sweet revenge.
