Sweet Vengeances Chapter 15

As Lily sipped her morning coffee, the slight hum of the city outside provided a little diversion from the stress that still clung to her from the previous night. She kept reliving the gala in her head, including the black envelope, Victor's enigmatic exchange, and the suspicious expression he gave her before giving her to Ethan.

She kept hearing the phrase "a dangerous game." Lily wasn't going to back down, even though Ethan had given a clear warning. Her determination had simply become stronger if anything. The stakes were enormous, but so was her resolve to finish this, to reveal the truth, and to expose Victor.

There was a knock on the door, interrupting her thoughts. She put down her drink, walked across the room, and opened it to see Ethan standing there with an unreadable expression.

He entered without waiting for an invitation, saying, "We need to talk."

"Good morning to you as well," Lily remarked sardonically as he shut the door.

Ethan's blue eyes widened as he turned to her. "What were you contemplating last evening? That kind of following Victor? You had the chance to blow everything.

Lily swung her arms across her chest and shot back, "I didn't blow anything." "And I heard something crucial."

Ethan's mouth clenched. "You were fortunate. Things may have turned out quite differently if Victor had figured it out. Lily, he takes betrayal very seriously.

His statements made Lily furious, but she made herself remain composed. "He is not a threat to me."

"You ought to be," Ethan murmured softly. "You don't realize what he can do."

The weight of Ethan's remarks hung heavily in the air as they were silent for a beat.

With a softer tone now, Lily added, "Then help me." "No one knows Victor as well as you do. We must cooperate if you truly want to stop him.

Ethan paused, his expression showing the turmoil. He exhaled at last and combed through his hair. "All right. But this is how we do it. No more careless actions.

Lily nodded, feeling a wave of relief wash over her. "Agree."

By midday, Lily was sitting in a quiet café across from Ethan, holding a hot cup of tea. As he described Victor's operations, Ethan laid out the stack of papers he had brought on the table.

Ethan continued, his voice low enough to be inaudible, "Victor's empire isn't just built on legitimate business ventures." "It has a darker side—illegal shipments, money laundering, and relationships with some extremely dangerous individuals."

As Lily scanned the papers, her brow furrowed. "And you've been keeping this knowledge to yourself?"

"I've been collecting proof," Ethan clarified. "We must execute it correctly if we hope to defeat Victor. He will bury us before we have a chance if we make even one mistake.

The seriousness of what he said made Lily's stomach turn around. She was already aware that this would be risky, but it seemed more genuine after hearing it stated so clearly.

She inquired, "What about the envelope from last night?" "Did you discover its contents?"

Ethan gave a headshake. "Not just yet. However, I may know someone who can help. We might be able to decipher Victor's plans if we can stop him in his tracks.

Lily nodded, her thoughts whirling with potential. "What about Cassandra? What role does she play in this?

Ethan's face grew serious. Victor has always used Cassia as a pawn. She follows his instructions without question. Don't undervalue her, though. She is equally as vicious as he is.

When Lily thought of Cassandra, her chest constricted. The woman had already contributed to the breakdown of her marriage, and now it appeared that she was involved in something far more significant—and far more hazardous.

Lily surprised even herself when she said, "I need to talk to her."

Ethan squinted his eyes. "That's not a good idea."

Lily countered, "She might have information we can use." "If I can make her talk—"

"She refuses," Ethan cut in. "Cassandra has no faith in anyone." And she will annihilate you if she believes you pose a threat.

With frustration brewing inside of her, Lily bit her lip. "We can't do anything while we sit here."

"We're not doing nothing," Ethan stated resolutely. "We're acting wisely. Let me take care of Cassandra.

Lily wanted to argue, but she knew it would be useless based on the expression in Ethan's eyes. On this, he was not going to back down.

Lily was by herself in her flat later that night, the quiet enclosing her. Every moment of the last several days kept coming back to her thoughts, refusing to stop. Her sense that something was missing—some essential component that would put everything in its proper place—persisted.

The buzz of her phone cut through her thoughts. When she took it up, the screen flashed an unidentified number.

"Hello?" she said warily.

A man's voice on the other end answered, "I know what you're trying to do, but you don't know me."

A beat skipped in Lily's heart. "Who is this?"

The speaker answered, "Let's just say I share your desire to see Victor Kane fall." "Meet me in an hour at the intersection of Fifth and Main if you're serious about defeating him. And arrive by yourself.

Before Lily could reply, the line died.

Her thoughts were racing as she gazed at the phone she was holding. She was aware that it might be a trap. However, it might also be the respite she required.

She picked up her coat and went out the door without allowing herself time to think.

The pavement at the intersection of Fifth and Main was covered with lengthy shadows from the lighting. As Lily looked about, her nerves jangling, her breath blew in the cold night air.

A man emerged from the darkness, the brim of a hat covering his face.

"You came," he murmured in a gravelly, low voice.

"Who are you?" Lily stood back and demanded.

The man gave her a small twist, as though he was assessing her. "A companion. We should stop there.

"That isn't good enough," Lily stated firmly. "You'll need to perform better than that if you want my trust."

After hesitating, the man moved in closer, displaying a worn and aged face.

He introduced himself as Jack Monroe. "I am also capable of bringing Victor Kane to his knees."

Lily gasped for air. She recognized the name because she had heard Ethan bring up Jack, a former coworker of Victor's who had vanished years prior.

Her voice was hardly audible above a whisper when she questioned, "Why now?"

Jack stated with stern eyes, "Because I've seen what he's capable of." And it's time for him to be stopped. However, you will need to trust me if you want my assistance.

As she gazed at him, Lily's thoughts were racing with uncertainty and resolve. She was unsure if Jack was a friend or an enemy, but she did know that the game had just gotten significantly riskier.
