Sweet Vengeances Chapter 25

Ahead, the thick woodland loomed, the blackness encircling them indefinitely. Their footsteps were muted by the thick layer of fallen leaves underneath them, making every step feel purposeful. With his keen eyes searching every shadow for possible danger, Jack took the lead. Behind him, Ethan moved next to Lily, keeping her grounded in the pandemonium of their escape with his protecting presence. Monica followed, holding onto the duffel bag like it was her lifeline.

Lily felt her heart thumping in her chest. She could still see the sight of headlights glaring down on them, replaying the memories of their tight escape. Running caused her legs to burn, but she was able to keep going because of the adrenaline in her blood.

"Jack, how much farther?" Monica’s voice could hardly be heard above the sound of their footsteps as she murmured.

"Not much," Jack said in a stern yet quiet voice. "Just ahead is an abandoned cabin. There, we’ll get together and decide what to do next.

Monica gave a nod but remained silent. Her expression was one of obvious terror, reflecting Lily’s own feelings. The stakes were higher than any of them had expected, and this game had devolved into a struggle for survival rather than merely a game of retaliation.

Ethan’s blue eyes searched Lily’s as he looked at her. "I assume you’re holding up?"

Even though the weight of everything was about to overwhelm her, she lied and said, "I’m fine." "Just... concentrated."

He gave her a tiny, comforting grin as he nodded. "We’ll overcome this. Together.

Minutes later, the cabin appeared as a tiny, weather-beaten building tucked away in a clearing. It was better than nothing, even though the windows were boarded up and the wooden walls drooped with age. When Jack pushed the door open, the musty interior smelled of decay and damp wood.

Jack mumbled, "Not much, but it’ll do," and placed his bag on a flimsy table in the middle of the room.

Monica dropped onto a chair and placed the duffel bag on her lap, her hands shaking. She whispered, "It’s unbelievable that this is my life now." "Hiding, running... It’s like something from a bad dream.

Lily sat dryly on the couch that groped under her weight and whispered, "Welcome to my world." There was no denying the weariness in her voice.

Ethan squatted next to her, his presence grounded and steady. As of right now, we’re safe. Breathe for a moment.

Lily gave a nod but remained silent. She couldn’t cling to the sense of safety, especially with Victor Kane’s men surely closing in.

The gathering slipped into an uncomfortable quiet as night fell. The flickering flames of the tiny fire that Ethan had started in the fireplace created swirling shadows on the walls. Lily’s thoughts swirled wildly as she gazed into the fire.

Her thoughts returned to Daniel. She had been too focused on surviving for days to worry about him, but suddenly his treachery was like a sharp wound, resurfacing. Was she even in his sights? Did he care that this pandemonium was the result of his actions? She wasn’t sure. Although Daniel had always been self-centered, this was more than she could have ever anticipated.

Ethan gently reminded her that she was far away from her thoughts.

"Just pondering," she said.

"What about Daniel?" he asked in a bland tone.

After hesitating, Lily nodded. "All of this began because of him. the cause of our presence. I find myself questioning whether he even realizes what a disaster he made.

Ethan’s mouth clenched. "Whatever he is doing is irrelevant. He is not worthy of taking up any place in your thoughts.

His remarks were stern but accurate. Lily was done being collateral damage; Daniel had made his decisions.

The silence was broken by an abrupt sound outside. There’s a slight rustle, then the distinct crunch of leaves beneath your feet.

In a second, Jack sprung up, his fingers hovering over his holster. He growled, "Stay here," and walked over to the window.

Ethan got up also, standing between the others and the door. Monica stopped, staring at the duffel bag with wide eyes as if it might be the solution to their problem.

As Jack peered through a gap in the boarded-up window, Lily’s heartbeat accelerated. His expression clouded.

He said, "They’re here."

Ethan balled his fists. "How many?"

"Too many," Jack said somberly. "We must get moving."

Monica’s face lit up with panic. "Go? Where? They’re right outside!

"Believe me," Jack stated in a composed yet firm voice. "We’re not going to be cornered here."

As quietly as possible, the group crept out the rear door. The forest, with its deep and confusing shadows, stretched out in front of them like a maze.

Jack took the lead, moving quickly and deliberately. As they sprinted, Ethan remained near Lily, his hand grazing hers. Monica fought to keep up and fell behind, breathing in short gasps.

Every stride Lily took made her heart race. Voices shouting commands, the crunch of boots on fallen leaves, the noises of their pursuers growing louder.

The group was startled by the sound of a gunshot.

"Go!" Jack turned to their assailants, drew his own weapon, and barked.

Ethan took Lily by the hand and drew her closer. "Go on!"

As they ran, the jungle was a blur, and their only concern was getting away from the men who were after them. Ethan grabbed Monica’s arm and hauled her to her feet as she staggered and almost fell.

As they increased the distance between themselves and their assailants, the sound of gunshots became increasingly distant. However, the fear persisted.

Breathless, they came to a halt close to a tiny creek. Their surroundings were illuminated in an unsettling way by the moonlight reflecting off the sea.

"We must continue to move," Jack stated in a strained tone. "They’re close behind."

Legs shaking, Lily leaned against a tree. "How do they continue to locate us?"

"They possess resources," Ethan stated somberly. "They’re desperate, too."

Clinging to the duffel bag, Monica fell to the ground. "This is not what I signed up for. I didn’t want to—I just wanted to expose Victor.

"Do you believe that any of us registered for this?" Jack lost his patience and snapped.

"Enough," Ethan interrupted in a stern tone. "We have no time to quarrel. We remain united, continue on our path, and find a way to put an end to this.

Lily gazed at him, admiration and terror causing her chest to constrict. Ethan stayed steadfast in the face of all this, his determination unwavering.

She forced herself to concentrate by taking a big breath. It was by no means the end of the conflict. And they would have to be more resilient than ever if they were to live.
