Sweet Vengeances Chapter 70

Lily sat in the backseat of the SUV, her fingers gripping the damp fabric of her dress as the vehicle sped through the rain-soaked streets. The night outside blurred into streaks of neon and headlights, but her focus remained on Ethan, who sat beside her, his jaw clenched, his gaze fixed ahead.

Alejandro drove in silence, his expression unreadable as he maneuvered through the city. The tension in the air was thick, pressing down on her chest like a weight she couldn’t shake.

Daniel was unconscious in the vehicle behind them, restrained and bleeding, but alive. They had him.

But Carlisle was still out there.

Lily knew the fight wasn’t over. If anything, tonight had only proven how much further this war was from ending.

Yet, her thoughts kept drifting back to him.

Ethan.

His touch still lingered on her skin, his voice still echoed in her ears. The moment in the rain, the way he had looked at her—it had shaken her more than she wanted to admit.

She stole a glance at him, taking in the way his wet shirt clung to his frame, the sharp angles of his face illuminated by the passing streetlights. He was tense, his hands curled into fists on his lap.

Lily wasn’t sure if it was because of Daniel or because of her.

A reckless thought slipped into her mind.

What if I just reached for him? What if I just—

"You should get some rest," Ethan said suddenly, his voice low but firm.

Lily blinked, startled. "I’m not tired."

He turned his head slightly, his piercing blue eyes meeting hers in the dim light. "You’re exhausted."

She was tired. Every muscle in her body ached, and the emotional weight of everything that had happened was pressing down on her. But she didn’t want to close her eyes. She didn’t want to let go of the moment—because she knew the second she did, reality would come crashing back in.

"I’m fine," she said instead.

Ethan exhaled sharply but didn’t argue.

Instead, he did something that surprised her.

He reached out, his fingers brushing against her hand before gently curling around it.

Lily sucked in a breath, her pulse spiking.

His touch was warm, steady. It wasn’t demanding or possessive—it was just there, grounding her, as if he knew she needed something to hold on to.

Her throat tightened, but she didn’t pull away.

Neither did he.

By the time they reached the safe house, the rain had slowed to a drizzle, leaving the streets glistening under the dim glow of the streetlights. The building was discreet, tucked between two abandoned warehouses—secure, hidden.

Alejandro stepped out first, scanning the area before giving a sharp nod. "All clear."

Ethan released Lily’s hand, and she immediately missed the warmth of his touch. He stepped out first, his movements quick and controlled, before offering her his hand.

She hesitated.

Not because she didn’t want to take it.

Because she wanted to take it too much.

Swallowing hard, she ignored the way her heart betrayed her and accepted his help. His fingers wrapped around hers, firm but gentle, and a shiver ran up her spine that had nothing to do with the cold.

Once inside, the tension in the air only thickened.

Daniel had been taken to a separate room, where Alejandro and his men would ensure he didn’t escape. The walls of the safe house were lined with weapons, surveillance equipment, and a few sparse pieces of furniture. It wasn’t a home, but it was safe.

Ethan pulled off his wet jacket, tossing it aside before turning to her. His gaze swept over her carefully, assessing.

"You need to change," he said.

Lily crossed her arms. "I’m fine."

He let out a low breath, his frustration barely masked. "Lily—"

"I don’t need you taking care of me, Ethan," she cut him off, her voice sharper than she intended. "I’m not some fragile little—"

"I know you’re not," he interrupted, his voice quieter, but no less intense.

She inhaled sharply, caught off guard by the way he was looking at her.

Like he saw her.

Like he saw through every wall she had ever put up, every carefully constructed defense she had built over the years.

Ethan stepped closer, closing the space between them. "That doesn’t mean I’m not going to worry about you."

Lily swallowed. Her heart pounded against her ribs.

"Why?" she whispered.

A muscle in his jaw twitched. "You know why."

She did.

She just didn’t know what to do about it.

The safe house was quiet. Alejandro and the others were focused on extracting information from Daniel, giving Lily and Ethan a rare moment alone.

She sat on the worn leather couch, her fingers gripping the edge of the cushion, while Ethan leaned against the counter, watching her with an unreadable expression.

The weight of the night pressed down on both of them.

But there was something else too.

Something dangerous.

Something that had been building for weeks.

Lily licked her lips, her voice barely above a whisper. "This is reckless."

Ethan’s lips curved slightly, but there was no humor in his expression. "I know."

Her fingers curled into fists. "We shouldn’t do this."

His eyes darkened. "Probably not."

Silence stretched between them, charged and unrelenting.

Lily knew she should stand up. Walk away. Put distance between them before it was too late.

But she didn’t move.

And neither did he.

Instead, Ethan pushed off the counter, slowly crossing the room until he was standing in front of her. The heat radiating from his body was almost suffocating.

His fingers lifted, brushing a damp strand of hair from her face. The touch was barely there, but it sent a sharp jolt through her body.

Lily exhaled shakily. "Ethan..."

His gaze dropped to her lips. "Tell me to stop."

She should.

She had to.

But she didn’t.

Because she didn’t want him to stop.

Not anymore.

The realization hit her like a tidal wave, stealing the breath from her lungs.

Before she could overthink it, before logic could interfere, she reached up and curled her fingers into the front of his shirt, pulling him closer.

Ethan sucked in a sharp breath, his resolve visibly cracking.

And then—

His lips crashed against hers.

The world around them disappeared.

The tension that had been simmering for weeks, the unspoken desire that had threatened to consume them—it all ignited in an instant.

His hands slid into her hair, tilting her head back as he deepened the kiss. It was desperate and consuming, filled with the weight of everything they had been trying to deny.

Lily melted into him, her body pressing against his as heat flooded through her veins.

It was reckless.

It was dangerous.

It was inevitable.

And for the first time in a long time—

Lily didn’t care about the consequences.

Because this—whatever it was between them—was real.

And she wasn’t ready to let it go.

Not yet.
