Sweet Vengeances Chapter 8

Lily sat back against the counter, her knuckles white as she grabbed the edge, and the silence in the kitchen was deafening. Jack's statement from their previous encounter, "Daniel isn't just a victim," kept repeating in her head. He takes part in it.

She now felt ten times as betrayed as she had when she learned of Daniel's affair. It was more than simply infidelity; it was deceit on a larger scale than she had anticipated. The man she believed to be her acquaintance had been hiding more than a mistress.

She walked the room, attempting to make sense of it all as her thoughts went awry. She wanted to let out the rage that was building inside of her by screaming, crying, and throwing something. Instead, she made herself concentrate. She wanted order, not confusion.

She grabbed her phone and looked over the messages Jack had provided her earlier, which included a list of persons related to Daniel's transactions, financial records, and screenshots of transactions. Accounts that are offshore. Shell businesses. The sort of proof that showed a man who was intricately linked to a network of wrongdoing.

Lily took a deep breath. Her stomach roiled more and more as she read. Daniel had led a second life in addition to lying to her. And suddenly she found herself in the center of it.

Lily got ready to face Daniel again the following morning. He was going to be shown incorrectly if he believed he could dismiss her with excuses and half-truths.

He was in his study, where he regularly went to "work," when she found him. His forehead was wrinkled in concentration as he leaned his head over a pile of papers. She hesitated, observing him for a time. He appeared so composed and usual. She nearly began to doubt herself as a result.

However, the rage returned, and she entered the room. "Daniel."

Startled by her tone, he raised his head. "Lily? What's the matter?

Folding her arms across her chest, she shut the door behind her. "We must speak. And I want the complete truth this time.

Daniel leaned back in his chair and moaned. "Last night, I told you everything."

"No, you didn't." Her voice was like a dagger slicing through the air. "I think you're a victim because of what you told me. However, I've learned better. I talked to someone who has been looking into this.

His face changed instantly. His eyes widened and his jaw tensed. "You made a hire?"

"Yes," she answered firmly as she moved in closer. And he discovered a lot. Shell corporations and offshore accounts. Isn't this more than Cassandra extorting you? You have been involved in this from the beginning.

Daniel was quiet for a while. His eyes met hers without flinching. Then he stepped across the room, taller than her. "You don't know what you're discussing."

"Then tell me about it!" She retorted, raising her voice. "Because it appears that you have been deceiving me for years at this point."

Daniel raked a hand through his hair as his shoulders slumped. "Lily, it's not that easy."

"Yes," she yelled. Daniel, you've been keeping things from me. Things that might destroy us both. Will I sit here and let you take me down with you, do you think?

His face contorted in exasperation as he paused. "You have no idea what these individuals are capable of."

"Then explain it to me!"

Daniel rubbed his temples and sat back down with a heavy groan. Sandra is more than just an opportunist. She has connections to influential people. People who, should we cross them, would not think twice about destroying us.

Lily's chest constricted. "So, why did you initially become involved?"

He lowered his voice to hardly more than a murmur. "Because I believed I had control over it." I believed I could protect us.

"Safe?" she asked again, her tone brimming with incredulity. "You've increased our risk more than before."

Lily and Jack met in a little café outside the city later that day. As she described her encounter with Daniel, the soft murmur of talk surrounding them offered a peculiar sense of solace.

Jack paid close attention, his face unreadable. He leaned forward with his elbows resting on the table after she was done. "And do you think he's real?"

Lily paused, gazing into her coffee cup. "I'm not sure. I kind of want to, but how can I believe anything he says these days?

Jack gave a slow nod. "You have good reason to doubt him. Daniel is not merely a passive participant in this, based on what I've discovered. These strategies have helped him both financially and professionally. He is only attempting to shield you now because he is aware of the walls coming in.

Her belly rumbled. "How should I proceed? Will I also be at risk if I approach the authorities?

Jack's eyes darkened and his jaw tensed. "There is no denying that it is a danger. However, being silent is also not an option. We'll learn more about what we're dealing with the deeper we go. I won't leave you to deal with this alone.

She was surprised by what he said. Startled by the earnestness in his speech, she glanced up at him. She felt a glimmer of hope for the first time in days.

"I'm grateful, Jack," she murmured quietly.

Lily's thoughts were still racing as she got ready for bed that evening. She kept having the impression that she was perched on a precipice, balancing between dread, rage, and resolve.

She snapped out of her reverie when her phone buzzed on the nightstand. She scowled at the screen as she took it up. The message came from an unidentified number:

"Lily, you're playing a risky game. Take a step back, or you'll regret it.

Her heart ceased beating. She stared at the message, her thoughts spinning, her hands shaking. Someone was aware. She was being watched.

She considered calling Jack but changed her mind. The message's sender tried to scare her into silence by intimidating her. She couldn't allow them to prevail.

Her resolve strengthened, she put her phone down and erased the message.

Lily was committed to exposing the lies, even though they were becoming more intricate. Despite being intimidated, deceived, and betrayed, she was not a victim. She survived. And it wasn't finished yet.
