The creamy frosting looked very tempting.
Yang Nian walked over toYao Tangand offered it to her. “You like strawberry cake, right?”
He would often see her and Lin Xineat different kinds of desserts between classes. He knew that she was rather fond of milk tea, too.
That morning, just before the servants went out to buy the ingredients for the party, he had specifically asked them to prepare a strawberry cake.
But Yao Tangdidn’t even glance at it. She took a deep, impatient breath.
“Let me get one thing straight. So if I still feel that we aren’t suited for each other after spending some time together, then I can have this engagement canceled, is that right?”
Yang Nian nodded emphatically.
“Fine, I understand. There’s no need for you to do this kind of thing.”
The Yang family should be looking for a good marriage partner, right?
She couldn’t be bothered with such trifles, so she naturally wouldn’t be up to their standard.
“You’re welcome to it, nonetheless.” Yang Nian’s voice was deep and charismatic. His eyes were sparkling with pleasure after hearingYao Tang’s reply. He tried once again to hand her the cake.
From a distance, Yao Ranwatched them with jealousy and hatred.
How could Yang Nianbe so gentle towardYao Tang? And in front of so many people, too!
And Yao Tang, that bumpkin. She had been rejecting his advances all this time, so why had she suddenly agreed to spend some time with him? That scheming wench.
This was probably part of an elaborate plan to bait Yang Nianand reel him into her clutches!
“Sister Tang, does that mean that you want to break off your engagement with President Zhang of the Zhang Group?
“I understand that you like Young Master Yang, but it wouldn’t be good for you to string along two men at the same time.
“But I suppose you’re free to do whatever you want since Grandma is biased toward you. She supports you in everything, after all…”
Yao Ran was putting on another act. She lowered her eyes and acted small and timid.
“You may have thought it would be better to keep Young Master Yangin the dark about this, but you should at least make things clear with President Zhang and cut ties with him first.
“Otherwise, you would only be deceiving two innocent people.”
A pregnant silence fell over everyone.
They had never imagined that there was more to the story! The plot was getting more interesting at every turn.
“Did she just say the Zhang Group?” a girl asked out loud. “Isn’t that the real estate company that has recently been on the rise?”
“That should be the one. I don’t recall there being another President Zhang in City A.”
“But that can’t be. President Zhang is already in his forties or fifties this year. He looks the part, too. How can Yao Tangbe engaged to him?”
“Even so, the Zhang Group has been developing at an impressive rate. It’s starting to surpass most of the companies in the industry.”
“Zhang Group?” Yao Tangsuddenly asked. “Which one are you talking about?”
She shot Yao Rana cold look. “How come I don’t know about it when I’m the one who’s supposed to be engaged to him?”
Yang Nian turned toYao Ranwith a frown. “CousinYao Ran, there’s no need for you to speak of the incident from a few days ago. We’ve all been there to witness everything.Yao Tangobviously didn’t like President Zhang, nor did she act like they were a couple in any way. Only a fool would call it an engagement.”
Yao Ran looked at him with much disappointment.
“Young Master Yang, are you still the honorable gentleman that I know? How can you lie on Sister Tang’s behalf?”
She glanced at Yan Weithen, hoping that the latter would finally intervene and back her up.
To her dismay, Yan Weiwas still avoiding her gaze.
Yao Ran was puzzled by her behavior. She couldn’t understand why the girl changed her attitude all of a sudden. Hadn’t they agreed to form an alliance just a while ago?
“Oh,” Yao Tangexclaimed, finally remembering something. “Were you talking about the Old Master that I sent to the police station last time?”
A few of the guests chuckled at the term, “Old Master”.
“Sister Tang,” Yao Ranrebuked. “You may have no need for President Zhang anymore, but he has been a great help to you in the past. There’s no need for you to make fun of him behind his back like this.”
Yao Tang raised an eyebrow. “But ‘Old Master’ is a title of respect, isn’t it?”
Yao Ran was livid. She knewYao Tangwas being sarcastic, but she couldn’t exactly refute her words.
Yao Tang looked her straight in the eye. When she spoke again, her tone was serious.
“You’re an adult now, so you have to take responsibility for what you say or do. If you have entered into some unscrupulous engagement, then it’s only right that you see it through instead of pushing it on to someone else.”
Yao Ran was mortified. “What are you talking about? We both know that President Zhang was always engaged to you, not me. It has nothing to do with me.”
Yao Tang flashed her a knowing smile. “I recall telling him that day that he should go ahead and marry the one who wants it the most. Have you forgotten already?”
“You’re just saying that…” Yao Ranbit her lips, her eyes welling up. She looked pitiful.
“Are you sure?” Yao Tangretorted mockingly.
