The Billionaire Stands Up for Me Chapter 39

Adrian Gordon’s face was calm, not even glancing at her, as if it was none of his business, indifferent.

"Adrian Gordon! Are you deaf?" Sophie Miller began to rage, grabbing whatever was on the bedside table and throwing it at Adrian.

"Sophie, Sophie... don’t be —" Shirley Turner was frightened to see her daughter shaking off the drip needle on the back of her hand, and hurriedly tried to soothe her.

Adrian dodged twice and finally responded.

He remained expressionless, saying coolly, "If you want it that much, go snatch it yourself. I have things to do, I’m leaving first."

One has to admit, Adrian truly had the courage to do great things—once he made up his mind, he acted decisively and cleanly, without any hesitation.

Just like a month ago when he decided to abandon me to marry Sophie, he withstood all pressure and was heartless and callous to me.

Now, recognizing Sophie’s true nature, he decided to leave her without looking back, not caring about life or death.

Sophie finally tasted what it feels like to be abandoned, just like I did.

You could say it’s digging her own grave.

I left the ward with Adrian Gordon.

Before the door closed, I heard Shirley Turner cry out, shouting, "Doctor, doctor, my daughter is vomiting blood!"

We continued to leave, not stopping or looking back.

Doctors and nurses rushed hurriedly toward the ward behind us, soon shouting, "Quick, to the emergency room!" Sophie’s condition must have been particularly bad.

I didn’t turn to look at Adrian, just calmly asked, "Are you sure you don’t want to go back and see? It might be the last time."

Adrian turned to look at me, not responding to the question, but instead said in a low, remorseful voice, "Lily, I’m sorry." Content originally comes from n0velfire.net

"It’s okay, I no longer hate you." I turned and gave him a slight smile, as gentle as the passing of clouds.

The highest state of not loving isn’t hate, not anger, but indifference, with a heart as still as water.

I saw his face suddenly pained, his brow furrowing tightly.

We walked together to the elevator, and he turned his head, wanting to say something to me, as the elevator arrived and the doors opened.

He stepped inside, one hand blocking the elevator doors, looking at me, "Lily..."

I gave him a look, calmly and relievedly said, "We are already like strangers, no need to travel together."

On the way home from the hospital, I thought of what Sophie said, and felt somewhat unsettled.

So, I called my grandma.

"Nonsense! Although your mom did notice Jason Miller first, it was Jason Miller who took action and pursued your mom. He was quite the dashing figure when he was young, dressed very well, and your mom liked that genteel style. Who knew he had a girlfriend back then?"

Grandma became more and more indignant as she spoke, quickly realizing, "So, maybe Jason Miller and that vixen colluded to deceive your mom’s feelings and cheat our family’s property. Otherwise, why would that vixen’s child be just two years younger than you? The two of them must never have broken up!"

Listening to Grandma’s words, I quickly felt relieved.

The truth was almost as I had guessed.

I also believed that Mom was the biggest victim in this whole affair, kept in the dark from start to finish.

Thinking of Mom, I once again felt heartbroken and sorry for her.

Because she chose the wrong man and took the wrong path in marriage, what could have been a beautiful life was filled with thorns, dripping with blood at every step, and eventually ending in a tragic early death.

For Mom, marriage truly became the grave of love, and also her grave.

A rare weekend to relax, yet I didn’t dare let myself idle.

Because when my mind was empty, I would think of the call from Daniel Carter yesterday.

Thinking of various moments we spent together in such a short time.

Fortunately, reason triumphed over emotion.

Even though he was truly wonderful, like a light that attracted and enchanted me.

But the unexplained kindness and the vastly different family backgrounds still kept me sober, halting my steps in time.

Early Sunday morning, I went to the company to work overtime again.

Since I took over the company completely, I realized how troublesome being a boss was.

I am very confident in my expertise, but I am not good at managing employees. These days have been both busy and worrying, with tremendous pressure.

In the evening, as I looked at the sky outside and was about to pack up and leave, Wennie Lane called me.

"Where are you?" Eldest Miss Trenton opened, asking casually and leisurely.

I replied, exhausted, "Working overtime at the company."

"Are you kidding me? On the weekend, you don’t take a break and enjoy yourself, and you’re working overtime?"

"I have to rely on myself for everything now, and haven’t found my footing, so how can I relax and enjoy?"

Especially since a few friends have invested in the company, I feel even more pressure, worrying about running it poorly and causing my friends to lose money.

"Alright, come out, I’ve arranged a program for you, you’ll love it!"

"Don’t ask so much, the address is sent to your WeChat, hurry over!"

Wennie was swift, hanging up the call and immediately sending the address, urging again, "Hurry up!"

I checked the address, it was an entertainment club, providing a one-stop service of eating, drinking, and playing.

Thinking about being alone in the rented apartment, and having been troubled and irritable recently, I might as well go and relax for the evening.

Just as I left the office, Wennie sent another voice message, specifically reminding me not to drive, just take a taxi over.

I understood, it was going to be a night of revelry and drinking.

Might as well, let go of reason and get drunk, forget all the worries and troubles.

When I arrived at the club, I was secretly surprised as soon as I entered the private room.

This was quite the gathering.

Besides my close friend Wennie, there were Nora Saunders, Rachel Boone, Yvonne Chandler, and seven or eight other friends, who had all helped me financially when I was in urgent need recently, later investing in my clothing company, now all being my shareholders.

I should indeed treat everyone and thank them properly.

This group of rich second or third generation ladies were already indulging in a drunken debauchery, drinking, singing, the atmosphere lively.

"Lily is here!" Seeing me, Wennie waved her hand, calling out, "Come over, come over!"

I greeted everyone one by one and went over to Wennie’s side.

Seeing me sit down, Nora stopped singing, turned around and asked, "Have you settled everything at home?"

I nodded, "Everything’s taken care of, thanks to all of you sisters for your loyal support. This gathering is on me, everyone enjoy!"

"We’ve been waiting for you to say that!"

"Lily, you must really be a good boss, we’re waiting to profit and share dividends."

"Don’t worry, I definitely won’t let down your trust!"

Everyone started chatting about all sorts of topics.

Gradually, the conversation turned to Daniel Carter.

His extravagant purchase of a three hundred million Bracelet for me, though the online posts were removed and silenced, still a lot of people in Fallhaven’s upper circles knew.

Women together love to gossip, everyone was curious about what my relationship with Daniel really was, whether I was soon to become a Carter Family young mistress.

These past two days, I was trying hard to erase this person from my mind.

Going out tonight was also to divert attention from thinking about him.

Who knew, my friends’ conversation topics all revolved around him.

I suddenly realized, they trust me and confidently invest—could it be because they think I’ve climbed up to the Carter Family, for Daniel’s sake?

"No, no, don’t believe the rumors. I borrowed the money just to prove a point, otherwise that bracelet would be auctioned by Adrian and placed on Sophie’s hand." I hurriedly explained, fearing they’d misunderstand deeply, and that rumors would get more outrageous.

"But a three hundred million huge sum, someone agrees to lend to you, that’s astounding! You must have an unusual relationship."

"Oh come on, don’t be modest, we understand! The Carter Family is low-key~"

Words couldn’t persuade anyone.

At this moment, Wennie’s phone rang.

She stood up to take the call, simultaneously telling me, "There’s a new friend coming over, you don’t know them, but they’ve helped you a lot."

I quickly caught onto her attempt to change the topic, "Who?"
