That was to be expected.
Especially since the breakup, Wan Donglin hadn’t called once, and there had been no word from him. In the past, Wan Donglin would often go ten days or half a month without contact, but none of those times compared to this. It had been three to four months; he had completely disappeared.
He’d never even inquired about this shop, as if he had completely forgotten about it.
That was a real breakup; there was no need to drag things out.
However, when she saw his wedding invitation, she was momentarily stunned. But then she smiled faintly and said, "Never mind him."
"Xixi, don’t take it hard. There are plenty of good men out there."
Upset? She couldn’t wait for Wan Donglin to get married quickly; that way, he’d stop bothering her. If there had been even a shred of lingering affection or pain, she wouldn’t have decisively left that golden house back then.
Continuing to be entangled with him, letting her youth slip away—that would have been truly unbearable.
She just wondered: How long until he takes back this shop? She herself had found a job, so she wouldn’t freeze or starve, but what about Xu Xiaoya?
Now that he was getting married, truly severing all ties, would he still show her any mercy regarding the shop?
Winter days darkened early; the little sunlight available in the afternoon quickly vanished. By the time Yan Xixi got home, it was almost dark. The scent of mutton filled the streets, and only then did she remember: today was the Winter Solstice.
She didn’t feel like eating anything, so she washed up and went to bed early. However, she wasn’t sleepy at all. She picked up a book but couldn’t get into it, then browsed the internet on her phone, still feeling absent-minded.
She decided to turn off the light and lay in the darkness, holding her head.
Work was fulfilling, and it had been a long time since she’d felt lonely. Yet, for a single woman, such moments were unavoidable. Even for someone like Xu Xiaoya, whose family ties might be weak, there were still people waiting for her calls during holidays, people she could go home to for a meal. But not her. In this whole world, there was no one waiting for Yan Xixi.
Wan Donglin’s wedding, her boss was now Huang Xiaojue... and who knew how long her job would last? All of this was like adding frost to snow; how could her mood possibly improve?
Her phone rang a few times, but it stopped before she could answer. She picked it up and saw it was an unknown number. Not bothering to call back, she put it aside.
Suddenly, she heard a knock on the door. At first, she thought she’d misheard, but the knocking persisted.
She put on some clothes, got up, and cautiously peered through the peephole of the security door. "Who is it?"
She was utterly bewildered; she hadn’t ordered any takeout.
Opening the door, she saw a young man in uniform standing at her doorstep, carrying several bags of delicious-looking food. The containers were all exquisitely packaged, steaming hot, and filled with a rich variety of dishes.
She was suspicious, yet at the same time, her stomach suddenly rumbled with hunger.
"I haven’t ordered any takeout. Are you sure you haven’t made a mistake?"
The young man said, "A friend of yours asked me to let you have a look at this. It’s the delicious meal he’s having for dinner tonight. His phone is broken, so he couldn’t send you a picture..."
As he spoke, the young man deftly opened the boxes. "Miss, have you seen everything? Got a clear look? Alright, since you’ve finished looking, I’ll deliver it to him now..."
Yan Xixi was dumbfounded.
By the time she snapped out of her daze, the young man had already packed everything up and stepped into the elevator.
She rushed over, "Hey, who asked you to show it to me?"
Unfortunately, the elevator doors had already closed, and there was no one to give her an answer.
She stood there dumbly for a long moment. There were countless contacts on her social media who posted pictures of their meals every day, but which one of them would be so ridiculously bored?
Yan Xixi checked her phone thoroughly but couldn’t figure out who the culprit was.
Seriously, is it fun to play such pranks when you’ve got nothing better to do?
She was both annoyed and amused. Lying back down, her stomach growled even louder, and now sleep was completely out of the question.
